Key Issues:‣ Over 90% of energy (diesel and unleadedpetrol) supply is consumed within the landtransport sector‣ Automobile ownership is increasing rapidly withvehicle number (motorisation) reachingunprecedented levels, giving rising trend in trafficcongestion, let alone other adverse side effects onsocial, economic, environmental and societyaspects‣ increasing number of diesel-powered roadhaulage, bus and other operations resulting fromincreasing local economic/commercialdevelopment activities and international trade‣ inadequate attention/policy orientation on theneed to promote public transport as opposed toincreased private vehicle use

POLICY APPROACH:‣ Coordinate / integrate transport energy,land use, economic development andenvironment‣ Review import duties and licensing fees forvehicles with a view to introduce incentivesfor energy-efficient vehicles- HEV, Electric,Gas, Biodiesel…‣ educate the public in transport efficiencymatters such as vehicle choice, drivinghabits, vehicle operation and maintenanceand use of alternative public transport

Recommendations:‣ There is REAL need to reduce energy useand/or improve the overall efficiency of itsconsumption in Fiji’s land transport sector‣ The ultimate goal should be to reduceenergy use in the sector with the consequentreduction in GHG emissions.‣ Through making better and safer use offuel/vehicle‣ Through using cleaner or environmentallyfriendly fuel/vehicle (Diesel Fuel now at500ppm sulphur content)‣ Through improving public transportuse/reducing car dependence
