Key Issues:‣ Over 90% <strong>of</strong> energy (diesel <strong>an</strong>d unleadedpetrol) supply is consumed within <strong>the</strong> l<strong>an</strong>dtr<strong>an</strong>sport sector‣ Automobile ownership is increasing rapidly withvehicle number (motorisation) reachingunprecedented levels, giving rising trend in trafficcongestion, let alone o<strong>the</strong>r adverse side <strong>effects</strong> onsocial, economic, environmental <strong>an</strong>d societyaspects‣ increasing number <strong>of</strong> diesel-powered roadhaulage, bus <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r operations resulting fromincreasing local economic/commercialdevelopment activities <strong>an</strong>d international trade‣ inadequate attention/policy orientation on <strong>the</strong>need to promote public tr<strong>an</strong>sport as opposed toincreased private vehicle use
POLICY APPROACH:‣ Coordinate / integrate tr<strong>an</strong>sport energy,l<strong>an</strong>d use, economic development <strong>an</strong>denvironment‣ Review import duties <strong>an</strong>d licensing fees forvehicles with a view to introduce incentivesfor energy-efficient vehicles- HEV, Electric,Gas, Biodiesel…‣ educate <strong>the</strong> public in tr<strong>an</strong>sport efficiencymatters such as vehicle choice, drivinghabits, vehicle operation <strong>an</strong>d mainten<strong>an</strong>ce<strong>an</strong>d use <strong>of</strong> alternative public tr<strong>an</strong>sport
Recommendations:‣ There is REAL need to reduce energy use<strong>an</strong>d/or improve <strong>the</strong> overall efficiency <strong>of</strong> itsconsumption in Fiji’s l<strong>an</strong>d tr<strong>an</strong>sport sector‣ The ultimate goal should be to reduceenergy use in <strong>the</strong> sector with <strong>the</strong> consequentreduction in GHG emissions.‣ Through making better <strong>an</strong>d safer use <strong>of</strong>fuel/vehicle‣ Through using cle<strong>an</strong>er or environmentallyfriendly fuel/vehicle (Diesel Fuel now at500ppm sulphur content)‣ Through improving public tr<strong>an</strong>sportuse/reducing car dependence
