Duties<strong>Uniformed</strong> <strong>Division</strong> officers control access toprotected facilities including the White Houseand the Vice President’s Residence, through a systemof fixed posts and foot, bicycle and vehicularpatrols. These outer perimeter assignments areutilized 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.<strong>Uniformed</strong> <strong>Division</strong> officers are responsible formagnetometer operations at protected event sites.They detect potentially dangerous items orweapons, and prevent them from being broughtinto a secured area.


Career Path<strong>Officer</strong>s may, as their careers progress, be selectedto participate in one of several specialized units,including:The Canine Unitperformssecurity sweepsand responds tobomb threats andsuspiciouspackages.The Emergency Response Teamprovides a coordinated tacticalresponse for the White Houseand other protected facilities.The Countersniper Team utilizes observation,sighting equipment and high-performanceweapons to provide a secure environment forprotectees.


<strong>Officer</strong>s in the Motorcade Support Unit providemotorcycle tactical support for official movementsof motorcades.The Crime SceneSearch Unitphotographs,collects andprocessesphysical andlatentevidence.<strong>Officer</strong>s assigned to the Office of HumanResources and Training serve as firearms andclassroominstructors forthe U.S. <strong>Secret</strong><strong>Service</strong> at theJames J. RowleyTraining Centernear Washington,D.C.


The Special Operations Section handles specialduties and functions at the White HouseComplex, including conducting the dailycongressional and public tours of theWhite House.


QualificationsTo be considered for the position of a <strong>Uniformed</strong><strong>Division</strong> officer, applicants must meet thefollowing requirements:• U.S. citizenship• Must be at least 21 years of age andyounger than 40* at time ofappointment• High school diploma or equivalent• Excellent health and physicalcondition• Uncorrected vision no worse than20/60 binocular; correctable to20/20 in each eye.(NOTE: Lasik,ALK, RK and PRK corrective eye surgeries are acceptableeye surgeries for <strong>Uniformed</strong> <strong>Division</strong> officer applicants providedspecific visual tests are passed. The following are the waiting periodsbefore visual tests are conducted after the surgery: Lasik surgery –three months; PRK – six months; and ALK and RK – one year.)• Complete interviews and pass awritten test (the Police <strong>Officer</strong>’sSelection Test)• Complete a background investigationto include driving record check, drugscreening, medical and polygraphexaminations* An exception to the maximum age for original appointment is in effect untilOctober 2008 or until further notice.
