In memory of Misfit and Topazby Lana Fain, Zoo ManagerMisfit and her twin Mayday were only a few weeks old on May 21, 2000, whenthey became new residents at CALM’s Children’s Park. Mayday died last year, and sadly, we lost Misfit this past spring. Both sheep played a very important role at CALM providing that hands-onexperience which is so vital for zoo patrons. Over the past 10 years, she wasvisited by an estimated 60,000 guests. Although we are located in an agriculturecommunity, it was surprising the number of children who had never been eye-toeyewith a sheep. Misfit provided them with that experience.Much to our grief, we have lost our golden girl Topaz. In 1987, this gloriousgolden eagle came to CALM from a rescue group in Paso Robles after she hadbeen shot resulting in the amputation of her right wing. She shared her exhibitwith Jasper, our male golden eagle.Over the past 23 years, hundreds of thousands of people have been awed bythe magnificence of this bird, entertained by her behavior during nesting seasonand absolutely thrilled to be so close to a “Golden.”We imagine Misfit with Mayday frolicking in meadows of clover. We see Topaz once again soaring freely in blue skies. We miss them.TopazMisfitWish ListIAMS dry dog food weight controlWild bird or finch seedRaisins or other dried fruitAlmonds, pecans, peanuts –unsalted, unflavoredHex Armor Animal GlovesSongbird prefab cageNon-contact infrared thermometerReptile UV bulbs & fixturesHabba Huts (various sizes)Reptile “hide” dens (various sizes)2” diameter rope –Marine or ManillaRototillerElectric or Gas weed-eaterHand held cordless leaf blower (2)Hula-Hoes, rakes, shovelsUnscented clay cat litter(not scoopable)Gift cards from Pet, Grocery,Hardware, or Office Supply StoresRolls of Aviary Weld WireStock or horse trailerPower tools, wrenches, tapemeasures, misc. toolsTrash can roll cartsGrass fertilizer6 volt, deep cycle batteriesIndustrial air compressorPressure washerChop sawPVC pipe-schedule 40—1”, ¾” or ½”Rodent Breeding System—14”x14”x7”Battery powered drill & sawGas lawnmowerRolls of bamboo fencingSolar powered electric fence chargerNew paint brushes and rollersMist system tubing—1/2”Carts for Docent presentationsNew golf cartMedical Equipment:Pulse OximeterVet Hospital caging unitsOtoscope/OpthalmascopeMicrohematocrit CentrifugeIncubatorCO2 and/or oxygen tank & hoses3

Look who is new at the Zoo!by Don Richardson, Curator of AnimalsLast year, a two-month-old bobcat was turned in to theCALM Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. It was our hope thatthe little female could be returned to the wild; however, shecame to us too dependent on humans to be released. At thatpoint, we made the decision to keep her at CALM.Coco, as we now call her, is on exhibit in the MammalRound with the two older males, Nike and Reebok.Introducing them was a process that involved our AnimalKeepers, as well as our Docents, to ensure the introductionprocess went as smooth as possible and with the leastamount of territorial spats and disagreements. After a fewmonths, the three live in a harmonious existence—most ofTheir actual origins are not known. However, documentation throughout history indicates that thespotted or pied sheep may have originated in what is nowSyria some three thousand years ago. Pictorial evidencetraces movement of these sheep through North Africa,Sicily, Spain and on to England.Importation of Jacob sheep has occurred in smallnumbers since the early 1900’s. They were originallyimported specifically for game parks and zoos. There are many references about the Jacob sheepbeing direct descendants of the flock of sheep acquiredby Jacob during the time he worked for his father-inlawas mentioned in the Bible (Genesis30), or that they were washed ashore fromshipwrecks during the attempted invasionof the Spanish Armada during the reign ofElizabeth I.Jacob sheep differ from other British andNorthern European polycerates (sheep withmultiple horns). They differ from other primitive breedsin that they have a medium fine fleece andno outer coat—which make them a delightfor hand spinners and for connoisseur ofnatural color. Other primitive breeds aredouble-coated, having a fine inner coat and acoarser, longer outer coat.Stop by and visit these two “Old World”sheep on your next visit to CALM!Source: Jacob Sheep Breeder AssociationLily and Ivy, Jacob sheepthe time. Coco is the smallest of the three bobcatsand is waiting for you to visit!Within the next few months, they will all movefrom the Mammal Round to the new, beautifulMountain lion/Bobcat exhibit. The next time you visit the Children’s Park atCALM, you are not imaging you are seeing spots!CALM recently acquired two Jacob sheep Lily and Ivywho are as unique in appearance as they are sweet.Jacob sheep have graced the large estates andcountry homes of England for many centuries. Theirimpressive horns, black and white faces and spottedbodies have no doubt contributed to their popularityand survival. They produce 2, 4, or 6 horns in bothrams and ewes. Ram horns can reach up to 30 inchesor more.Coco the Bobcat7Photo courtesy of Sharon Boyles.
