previewwww.portlandart.orgAili Schmeltz, Molly Reilly, Stephanie Dotson: ConsolePORTLAND ART CENTER, PORTLAND OR – Oct 4-26 In Console, three female artists – AiliSchmeltz, Molly Reilly, and Stephanie Dotson – present a collaboration of their work. The threemet in 2006 as visiting assistant professors at Indiana University, and a common theme oftransience and place in their work hatched Console. AiliSchmeltz incorporates retro consumer materials andspeaks to the dualities inherent in the suburbanlandscape. Molly Reilly takes on objects discarded froma culture of excess and composes vignettes illustratingthe overwhelming sense of loss and familiarity with thephysical remains of a cultural memory. Stephanie Dostonexplores gallery installation, illustrative drawings anddecorative patterning with digital media. The installation in general focuses on the artists'personal histories in relation to the eerie landscape of achanging world that has been sculpted by consumerneeds and ideals. Unable to separate individual identityfrom the causes and effects of consumerism, Schmeltz,Reilly and Dotson use their installation as a tool forawareness while keeping the general attitude one ofplayfulness, humour and introspection.Aili Schmeltz uses warm and familiar materials likevinyl upholstery and polyester to conjure the nostalgiaof her 1970s upbringing. The obvious comfort andconvenience inherent in her sculptural works create aparody that forces viewers to question what is often seenas complacent in a suburban reality. Molly Reilly's quietphotographic work includes depictions of the Americancountryside to evoke a sense of home and place.Stephanie Dotson, Stormdetail, [Portland Art Center,Portland OR, Oct 4-26]Stephanie Dotson's visual strategy is rooted in a graphic, illustrative or design-oriented style. Withan element of whimsy similar to that found in Schmeltz's work, Dotson's organic forms andanimal motifs appear more concerned with the transient edifice of our contemporary outlook onthe natural world.
