Rick Rivet: Paintings 2000-2005KELOWNA ART GALLERY, KELOWNA BC – Sep 15-Nov 18 Rick Rivet: Paintings 2000-2005 is avisually rich exhibition organized and circulated by the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. RickRivet was born and raised in Aklavik, Northwest Territories. He spent his formative years on theMackenzie River Delta in a community that included Inuit, Indians, Métis and various peoples ofEuropean descent. In his paintings, he draws from hisexperiences of the diversity of Inuit, Indian and Métiscultures.Rivet’s work is influenced by other ancientshamanistic societies throughout the world,philosophical thoughts centred on ideas of the universalunconscious, and his interest in the art movements ofSurrealism and Abstract Expressionism. For Rivet, art isa meditative process, one that mirrors the shaman’sfunction as mediator between the spirit world and theworld of the human. Recurring themes in his paintingsinclude journeys through life, dreams, mapping andtransformation.Rivet has had extensive formal education with a BA fromthe University of Alberta (1969-72); BFA (Painting) fromthe University of Victoria (1976-80); MFA (Painting)from the University of Saskatchewan (1983-85); and BEdfrom the University of Saskatchewan (1985-86).
