JCSS - <strong>Administrative</strong> Procedures for <strong>Gifted</strong> Education, Page 6<strong>Program</strong> Description - High School LevelAt the high school level, students have opportunities to apply the skills learned in middle schoolto specific academic and/or creative fields. <strong>Gifted</strong> students may choose classes that reflect theirparticular strength(s) in a specific area(s). Some of the models we use at the High school include:Advanced Placement Classes, Cluster Grouping, Independent Study, On Line Classes, Honors Classesand Mentorship.Initial Eligibility CriteriaThe initial eligibility criteria established for the <strong>Jackson</strong> <strong>County</strong> School System is in accordancewith Rule 160-4-2.38. Information shall be gathered in each of the four categories described below inOption B. Any data used to establish eligibility in one area shall not be used to establish eligibility inanother area. Any test scores and data used to determine eligibility shall be current within two calendaryears. An individual mental ability test may be given or more information may be collected as deemednecessary. The use of nonverbal assessments for some students may be considered. Only one teacherchecklist for eligibility purposes can be used in the 4 areas. The JCSS will consider data regarding astudent’s eligibility that has been gathered and analyzed by a source outside the school system; however,such data shall not be substituted for data generated by the school and may never be used as the solesource of assessment data.A student may qualify for gifted education services by meeting both criteria in Option A OR three of thefour criteria in Option B. Only one of the four criteria can be met by a score on a rating scale orchecklist. JCSS will use the following to determine eligibility: In the event that there is a need forsecondary assessments to be used due to scoring discrepancies or other reasons, consultation with thesystem level <strong>Gifted</strong> Coordinator is required prior to administering any secondary assessments. Thesesecondary assessments must follow the criteria below.
