INTRODUCTION 

Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering 

(AKCE) was started in a humble way by 

Kalasalingam and Anandam Ammal Charities 

in 1984. “Kalvivallal” Thiru T. Kalasalingam, a 

veteran freedom fighter, is the founder Chairman 

of the College. The Ministry of Human Resource 

Development, Government of India, New Delhi 

has granted the University status (Under Section 

3 of UGC Act 1956) to AKCE wide notification 

No. F.9-2/2002/U.3 dated 20th October 2006. The 

University is located at the foot hills of the Western 

Ghats in a rural setting of Virudhunagar District, 

Tamil Nadu. The founding philosophy of the 

institute is to “Empower Youth” for development 

through technology. 

T. Kalasalingam as a freedom fighter was honoured by 

Hon’ble Shree Rajiv Gandhi, His excellency Shree R.V. 

Venkatraman, His Excellency Shree Shankar Dayal 

Sharma and other national leaders.

students within an Engineering University set up

students, there is a no separate higher secondary 

school that offers science stream.

TIFAC-CORE IN NETWORK ENGINEERING 

TIFAC-CORE in Network Engineering (TCNE) at 

Kalasalingam University is established under the 

Mission REACH program of the Department of Science 

and Technology, Government of India in 2002. This 

centre is set-up at the cost of Rs. 14.3 crores with 

active participation from the industry. This centre 

is established in an exclusively separate building 

having a built-up floor area of 115,000 sq. ft with 

adequate infrastructure like uninterrupted power and 

10 Mbps Internet connectivity. 

Aims and Objectives of TCNE 

• To serve as a nodal center for network technology 

development and adoption. 

• Offer training in all areas of Network Engineering. 

• Promote R&D activities having direct applications 

to industrial sector.

COMPUTING AND INTERNET FACILITIES 

Central Server Farm 

University has excellent computing facilities and Internet 

access. An enterprise server (Sun Fire 4800), 6 Blade 

Servers (IBM make) and 4 rack servers (Wipro make) 

cater the storage and computing needs of the users and 

comprise a central server farm with File server, Database 

server, Mail server, Web server, Back-up server, Proxy 

server. Licensed software are available for all system and 

application software. 

Internet Facility 

University has excellent internet access facilities through 

dedicated 24 Mbps bandwidth through microwave link 

(Reliance) and 10 Mbps bandwidth through leased line 

(BSNL). All the systems in the campus are connected on 

LAN and can be used for Internet access. All the buildings 

and the laboratories are connected with optical fibre 

through layer 3 switch providing highly reliable Gigabit 

backbone. 

Computer Centre 

Exclusive computer centre with 300 systems for internet 

access is available for all the students. This facility is 

available round the clock.

n - CARDMATH 

NATIONAL CENTRE FOR 

ADVANCED RESEARCH IN 

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS 

(n-CARDMATH) 

(Sponsored by Department of 

Science and Technology, New Delhi) 

With a view to promoting research, development 

and advanced training in Discrete Mathematics, 

Department of Science and Technology, Government 

of India, New Delhi has initiated steps towards setting 

up National Centre for Advanced Research in Discrete 

Mathematics (n-CARDMATH). 

Kalasalingam University is the first institution in 

our country to get n-CARDMATH. It was formally 

inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam 

on 5th January 2007. 

Under n-CARDMATH at Kalasalingam University 

nine sub-projects in the area of Graph Theory and 

Combinatorial Optimization have been approved by 

DST. 

The n-CARDMATH Core facilities in our University 

include a Library and a Laboratory with high speed 

computing facilities. Also there is a provision for 

Visitors Programme. The funding for establishment of 

the Core facility and for individual projects in the first 

phase is around Rs. 3 Crores. 

Dr. S. ARUMUGAM, Kalasalingam University is 

the Co-ordinator of the Project. 

Publications 

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurating n-CARDMATH 

We are publishing AKCE International Journal of Graphs 

and Combinatorics which is entering into the seventh 

year. The journal is well received all over the world and 

as on today we have 85 journals which are received 

on exchange basis. In June 2007, we conducted an 

International Conference on Recent Developments in 

Graphs and Combinatorics and around 300 participants 

attended the same. The proceedings of the above 

conference, edited by Prof. S. Arumugam and Prof. 

J. Bagga, has been published as a Special Issue of the 

Journal of Combinatorial Mathematics & Combinatorial 

Computing (JCMCC). 

International Collaboration 

The n-CARDMATH at Kalasalingam University has 

entered into an MoU with Centre for Combinatorics, 

Nankai University, China. We also have MoU with 

Oklahoma University, Ball State University and East 

Tennessee State University in USA which will strengthen 

our research activities in the coming years.

ACADEMIC SYSTEM 

B.Tech. in Kalasalingam University (KLU) is a four year 

degree course designed with a choice based relative 

credit system. The credit based system is a proven 

system in almost all the leading institutions like IITs in 

India, and institutions in abroad like MIT in USA. 

The B.Tech. course consists of (i) a general core 

programme comprising of basic sciences, humanities, 

basic engineering sciences, (ii) An engineering core 

programme comprising of foundation courses on both 

theory and practice concerned to the particular branch 

of engineering and (iii) an elective programme enabling 

the students to take up a group of courses of interest to 

him/her. The students will have the freedom to choose 

electives of their interest even across the departments. 

In addition, a student should satisfactorily complete the 

minimum number of other prescribed co-curricular and 

extra-curricular programmes, which include Industrial 

Training/Lectures, Soft skill development, international 

certification programmes, Sports, NCC/NSS, personality 

development programs, placement/career advancement 

related programs and the like. Among these courses 

also, the students can choose the courses of interest to 

them, meeting the minimum requirement as stipulated in 

the curriculum. In consultation with their department and 

project guide, the interested students are encouraged 

to take up a live project in any industry, as their final 

year project/thesis work, which is required to be done 

as a part of their curriculum. Based on the requirements, 

such students are permitted to work with the industry 

upto one full semester for completing the project. 

To help the students in planning their courses of study and 

for getting general advice on the academic programme, 

a Faculty Advisor, a faculty of the concerned department 

will be attached to each student. He / She will help the 

student in his /her entire endeavor during their period of 

study. The progress and performance of every class are 

being reviewed periodically by a panel known as Class 

Committee and all the problems and issues pertaining 

to the curriculum, syllabi and the conduct of classes are 

being resolved by the committee immediately, as and 

when they arise. For the slow learners and for those 

students who fail to get a passing grade in any subject, 

a special Summer Term Course will be offered during 

every summer vocation and/or Contact Courses to clear 

their backlogs and join the normal stream of students in 

the subsequent semester. Fast learners and toppers are 

encouraged to take up additional courses to earn extra 

credits, as stipulated in the regulation, to successfully 

complete the course in First Class with Distinction or 

Honours.

CORPORATE RELATIONS 

Kalasalingam University’s Office of Corporate Relations 

nurtures strong and continued partnership between the 

industries and the University. It creates and maintains 

relations with industries for effective exchange of knowledge 

between the University and the industries. This office is 

entrusted with the duty of interacting with the industries to 

increase the employment opportunities of the students and to 

increase their “real world” awareness. Practical training and 

placements of the University students are coordinated by the 

Office of Corporate Relations. 

Offering information, advice, guidance and job-seeking 

support for students are considered as the important activities 

of this Office. Career Advisers are available to discuss ideas 

and plans, and students are encouraged to attend the wide 

range of talks, information fairs and recruitment events 

offered. 

An Industrial Advisory Board monitors and advises the 

University periodically on the activities of the Office of 

Corporate Relations. 

Office of Corporate Relations, along with the concerned

ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT 

The department was initiated in the academic year 2001- 

2002. This young and academically active department 

has won many laurels to its credit in a short span of six

ANIMAL CELL CULTURE FACILITY 

A recent addition to our department is a state-of-the-art 

animal cell-culture facility. The facility has all the basic 

instruments needed for culturing animal cells, including 

an ESCO UV-sterilized laminar flow hood equipped with 

basic tools such as burners for sterilization and pipettes, 

Galaxy B CO2 incubator and a Carl-Zeiss inverted phase 

contrast microscope. This facility is currently being used 

for culturing human and animal cell lines such as human 

retinal endothelial cells and retinal epithelial cells as well 

as viral cloning work. 

THRUST AREAS OF RESEARCH 

The main goal of the research at our department is the 

application of modern biotechnology methods to the 

study of both basic questions as well as problems with 

practical applications. A particularly important activity 

is to find new molecules for prevention and treatment 

of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular inflammatory 

diseases. We are also working on isolating new 

microorganisms that can produce valuable substances 

such as therapeutic protein and enzymes of industrial 

importance. We also use microbial gene technology and 

modern analytical methods to understand and optimize 

Bioprocess development using bacterial systems.

The Department has organized an International

CENTRE FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY 

The department is itself a recognized centre for research 

in cutting-edge areas of biotechnology. It was initiated 

in the academic year 2005-2006 and is housed in an 

independent, multi-storied building with state-or-the-art 

equipment and infrastructure to help achieve its mission. 

The centre has dedicated laboratories for Molecular 

and Cellular Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, 

and Biochemistry and Genetic Engineering. Facilities 

are also available for working in Animal Biotechnology, 

Bioprocess Technology, and Downstream processing. 

MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY 

Molecular and Cellular Biology is one of the divisions of 

the Center for Biotechnology. 

The major areas of research interest are as below 

• Protein trafficking in eukaryotic systems 

• Molecular pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy 

• Biological synthesis of nanoparticles 

• Synthesis of bio polymers and their applications 

• Biochemistry of Nattokinase 

The research division has a 2000-sq. ft. research 

laboratory and a state-of-the-art animal cell-culture facility. 

The facility has all the necessary equipment needed for 

studying animal cells, including an inverted microscope, 

a laminar air-flow system and a CO 2 incubator. 

A transfection device (Amaxa) and a fluorimeter 

(Cytofluor) are new additions to the laboratory. 

MOLECULAR IMMUNOLOGY 

The major areas of research interest are as follows. 

• Immunomodulation of immune-mediated diseases 

• Computational approaches for mapping viral 

epitopes 

• Novel vehicles/ adjuvants for peptide vaccine

This research division has an area of 1000 sq. ft. and 

is equipped with a laminar air-flow system and a CO2

Chemical Process industries involve a large amount of heat transfer operations 

involving all the three modes of heat transfer. This lab gives the student a 

technical insight into the various heat transfer operations. 

MASS TRANSFER LABORATORY: 

This lab gives the student an experience in mass transfer operations, which are 

inevitable for a chemical industry. One of the fundamental concept in chemical 

engineering is the unit operation consisting essentially of the study of interphase 

mass transfer. Mass transfer finds extensive application in chemical engineering 

problems, where material balance on components is performed. 

FLUID MECHANICS & MECHANICAL OPERATIONS LABORATORY: 

The study of fluid mechanics is an important component in the chemical 

engineering curriculum. Fluid mechanics is the study of how fluids move and 

the forces on them. Fluid mechanics, especially fluid dynamics, is an active

The Embedded System laboratory is having latest version of Image development

ABOUT DEPARTMENT 

The department was established in the year 1987 and the first batch of students graduated 

from the department in the year 1991, offering Undergraduate Programme, Post Graduate 

Programmes and also M.S. and Ph.D Research Programme in the various fields of 

Instrumentation and Control Engineering. National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accredited 

the under graduate programme in the year 2003. The department has 18 well qualified 

and experienced faculty members including 2 doctorates. The faculty 

members are specialized in different areas of Instrumentation and 

Control Engineering, and also the department has regularly produced 

university rank holders. The department regularly revised the curriculum 

and syllabus to meet the industry requirements and is marching

The MCA course is divided into 6 semesters spread over 

three years and the M.Tech., M.Sc.(CT) course is divided 

into 4 semesters spread over two years. The courses 

will consist of lectures, extensive computer laboratory 

classes, seminars, working demonstrations and audiovisuals 

related to the course content. Short term specific 

“individual” and “team projects” will also constitute the 

courses. The courses are offered under Choice Based 

Credit System (CBCS). 

FACULTY AND SPECIALISATIONS 

The department has a team of seventeen experienced and 

dedicated faculty members including three doctorates with 

areas of specialization in soft computing, agent-based intelligent 

systems, network security, image processing, grid computing, 

pattern recognition, bio-informatics, cryptography, data mining 

and computer algorithms. Our faculty members have published 

several papers in international journals and have presented 

papers in various conferences. 


Our faculty members are actively engaged in research in areas 

like image processing, grid computing, pattern recognition, bioinformatics, 

cryptography, agent technology, network engineering 

and soft computing. The department has collaboration with 

leading Industries, funding agencies such as Department of 

Science ans Technology and foreign Universities. The department 

has an excellent infrastructure facility for research which is being 

used by the M.Tech. students and Ph.D. scholars.

The department association also carries out several 

activities such as conducting objective tests, mock

contest, debugging, quiz etc throughout the 

academic year to equip the students to cater to 

the industry expectations. The department also 

organizes a state level technical symposium every 

year. Our students have developed a software 

which helps in the learning process of the hearing 

impaired people. It was highly appreciated by our 

former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The Kalasalingam University has an air-conditioned library with the seating capacity of 350. Library has 62,283 

volumes in engineering, sciences, and management. The Library subscribes 594 Journals and magazines out of 

which 468 are international journals. Library subscribes to online journals of IEEE & Science Direct, ASME and ASCE. 

3182 CD/DVDs and 375 Audio/Video cassettes are there in the digital library section. Library has an Audio/Video 

room for students to learn at their own pace. 3460 back volumes of journals and 4425 project reports are kept in the 

reference section. Students are issued 4 readers tickets for borrowing books, CDs, journals or magazines. 

The library is proved with library automation system with ten Pentium computers in a network under client-server 

architecture. Multi-user software for library automation is available for issue, searching, administration, and reference 

facility for all the users. Library is in the process of developing databases for e-questions and e-syllabus. Library staff 

is engaged in collecting relevant details from the dailies and reports to prepare booklets, with enables the users to 

attend the forth coming competitions.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS 

� AIMS, MOTTO & TRAINING ACTIVITIES 

NCC Senior Division (SD) sub-unit of 4 Tamil Nadu Engr Coy./ 

NCC, Madurai was started in November 2003 at AKCE and 52 

cadets were enrolled. Dr. G. Manivannan was the care-taker of 

KLU-NCC sub unit. 

In January 2004, the NCC Senior Wing (SW) Sub-Unit of 2 Tamil 

Nadu Girls 

Bn./ NCC was started and 26 cadets were enrolled. 

In January 2005, the NCC SW was attached to 4 TN Engr Coy./ 

NCC Unit and 52 cadets were enrolled. 

A total of 104 cadets including boys and girls are on roll in 

KLU Sub-unit. 

On March 2006, our first batch cadets (33) appeared for the NCC 

‘B’ Certificate examination and all of them passed. 45 cadets 

appeared for the ‘C’ certificate examination and all of them 

passed. This subunit has achieved several landmarks and has 

added several feathers to the crown of our university. 

At present there are: 13 SD and 21 SW cadets in 2rd year NCC. 

58 SD and 12 SW cadets in 1st year NCC. 

Mr. M. Muthuvinayagam, Lecturer/Physics, was selected as caretaker 

of KLU-NCC from May 2007.

AIMS of NCC: 

1. To develop Character, Comradeship, Discipline, 

Leadership, Secular Outlook, Spirit of Adventure and 

the ideals of Selfless Service amongst the Youth of the 

Country. 

2. To Create a Human Resource of Organized, Trained
