First Junior-Senior Prom is “Prom”-ising
By Marion Silas
News Editor
Looking for a night of fun
and dancing with friends?
Junior/senior Prom promises
to be a great time this year.
Kettle Run is getting ready
to host it’s first junior/senior
prom. The theme will be Casino
Night. It will take place
on Saturday, May 15, from
8-12 PM in the Common’s
Area with an After-Prom in
the gym from 1-5 AM. Tickets
will be sold from May 3 until
May 12. Tickets will cost $25
for the first week, and after
that will increase to $30.
Students have high hopes
for the dance.
“I think it will be just as
fun as last prom,” stated junior
Taylor Starkey. “[I’m
looking forward to] seeing
how it turns out. I’m in SCA,
and it will be fun to see how
it all comes together.”
Many students who want
to go are already planning on
how they will get ready before
the dance.
“I’m going to shop at A
Formal Affair in Warrenton
for my dress,” said senior
Stephanie Hoffman. “[I’m
going to] Only Nails in Warrenton
to get my nails and
my eyebrows done, and I will
probably get my hair done
Cougars Show Off Their Talent
By Marion Silas
News Editor
Talent isn’t too hard to
find in a school like Kettle
Run, especially when students
have a chance to show
it off to the school in the annual
Talent Show.
“I have fun when
I’m performing, and
what better way to
spread music to new
people than to play
in front of the diverseness
of a high
school?”
Matt Booth
somewhere,” Hoffman explained.
Although some students
are able to get ready in an
hour or two, senior Jenny
Pecheco said it will take her
much longer. “It’s going to
take me about six hours,”
stated Pecheco.
Although preparation is
an important part, there are
various other aspects of Prom
that many people are looking
forward to.
“I just want to dance,”
commented junior Christopher
Riddleberger. “I will be
looking stunt daddy fresh.”
Unlike Riddleberger, senior
Stephanie Shipe said
“[I’m] mostly looking forward
to dressing up, but I’m also
looking forward to having
a good time with my boyfriend.”
So far, there have not been
any fundraisers to raise money
for the dance. The junior
class will be hosting a talent
show on April 22, of which
all of the proceeds will go toward
the Prom. Junior class
sponsor Jennifer Olinger is
in charge of planning both.
Olinger “hope[s] to raise
around $5,000 total” from the
sales for both the in-school
and night performances. If
all goes according to plan,
Prom tickets should not cost
Kettle Run’s second annual
talent show will be holding
auditions on April 7, with the
two performances on April
22. Tickets will be sold for $5
each, beginning on April 14.
Last year’s show had a
huge turnout, and many students
are looking forward to
seeing the new acts at the
upcoming 2010 show.
Junior Brigid Thomson
says that she is “looking forward
to someone doing some
funny stuff” this year.
“I want to go so I can hear
Daniel Patti sing like an
angel and get out of class,”
agreed sophomore Rachel
Bongiovi.
Not only are students
excited to see the new talent
showcased this year for
the school, as well as missing
Graduation
Outside
more than the $30.
This will be one of the last
big events of the school year
where the junior and senior
classes will get to let loose
and enjoy their last year together.
first block, many are ready to
show off their own skills in
the show.
“I have fun when I’m performing,”
said junior Matt
Booth. “And what better way
to spread music to new people
than to play in front of the diverseness
of a high school?”
The new acts are in the
process of getting ready for
the upcoming auditions this
April.
Much like Booth, senior
Daniel Schlenker is preparing
for his group’s act.
“I am really pumped to play
this year again. I love playing
music, and I think what we
have in store just might be
better than last year,” stated
Schlenker, whose band Boo
“It’s the last chance to really
be with everyone in your
class before graduation,”
stated senior Ashlin Manley.
Olinger believes this
Prom will by far turn out the
best in comparison to previ-
formed the “Pokemon Theme
Song” last year, which was a
hit among students.
“Unfortunately, like last
year, the act I’m in is being
kept very secretive until we
perform. It will involve myself,
Lawrence Ayers, Chet
Szwejkowski, and Sean Stanton.
All I can say is we will
be jamming and the school
is gonna love it,” Schlenker
promised.
As well as all of the “secretive”
acts that are quickly lining
up to try out, junior class
sponsor Jennifer Olinger has
planned another surprise
for one lucky student. She
is hoping this surprise will
entice students to purchase
tickets for the show.
“We will be raffling off a
ous Kettle Run dances. “We
have a very dedicated Junior
Class SCA and excellent parent/staff
volunteers,” she
said. “It is shaping up to be
the best dance in Kettle Run
history.”
Olinger. Any student who
buys a ticket has a chance to
win.
Judging by all of the interest
in this year’s show, it
promises to be a good one.
Senior Stephanie Hoffman
plans to attend this year’s
event. “I’m looking forward
to Lauren Forlano singing,”
Hoffman said.
Sophomore Amanda Davis
also plans to attend, but is
looking forward to the event
for a different reason. “I’m
looking forward to getting
out of class,” Davis laughed.
This event sells out quickly.
Students are encouraged
to buy tickets early if they
plan to attend. Plus, all the
proceeds will go towards the
junior, senior prom.
Senior Class Prepares for First Graduation Around
Kettle Run’s first
graduation ceremony will
be held on the football field.
The gym will be used as an
inclement-weather alternative.
With graduation being
held during the summer,
comes extreme heat and humidity
but allows more room
to invite more friends and
family.
“I’m happy graduation
is outside. Now, I can invite
my entire family and my
closest friends,” said senior
Ashlin Manley.
“I think it’s a great
idea, as long as it doesn’t
rain,” said senior Dana Strachan.
Seniors will be spending
most of the day preparing,
trying to keep their nerves
down, until the final moment
when the students will be
walking across the stage to
receive their diplomas.
“I’m going to spend
the day getting ready and
spend time with my family
while soaking in the fact
of being finished with high
school,” said senior Keisha
Fullen.
“Party of course!”
said senior Stephanie Hoffman.
Since graduation
means no more school, seniors
are busy making plans.
Graduation will be held Fri-
day June 11th at 6 p.m. “I’m
so happy graduation is on a
Friday; I have a huge majorette’s
completion Saturday
and graduation being on a
Friday just makes things so
much easier,” said Manley
“It was so aggravating
trying to tell my family
that want to come when that
I didn’t know when gradua-
is happy and so am I,” said
Strachan.
It has also been decided
that the first ever senior
trip will be to Cedar
Point in Ohio. It will be an
8 hour bus ride from Kettle
Run; the bus will leave Kettle
Run on May 21st and come
back May 23rd. The trip is
$200 and 100 seniors need to
sign up in order to make the
trip eligible.
“I’ve always wanted
to go to Cedar Point, and I’m
really excited to go with my
friends,” said Hoffman.
“Cedar Point is going
to be ridiculous; I can’t wait
to go it’s going to be insane,”
At the start of the
The 2010 Olympics took
“He built them so that
when he died, they would
protect him,” freshman Claudia
For all their hard work,
the servants were rewarded
in a shocking way.
Although Ventura learned
a great deal, she said her favorite
Overall, freshman say the
All students walked
Caffeine- A Very Unhealthy Addiction
By Stephanie Hoffman
Entertainment Editor
Energy drink consumption
has continued to
increase in popularity since
1997. Teen energy drink
consumption has been linked
to serious health issues, including
obesity and a lack of
sleep.
“I drink energy drinks
almost everyday,” said senior
Lauren Forlano, “I don’t feel
as alert throughout the day
without one.”
The impact of these
drinks also depends on how
they are consumed. People,
especially young people, tend
to abuse them, by drinking
more than one at a time.
“When I drink energy
drinks, I tend to drink more
than one, but I only do that
maybe once a week, or when
I feel the need to,” said freshman
John Holland.
Proposed Budget Cuts Alter Student, Staff Life
By Ajua Duker
Staff Reporter
The budget may be in better
shape than originally anticipated.
In an email sent out by
Dr. Jonathan Lewis, Fauquier
County Public Schools Superintendant,
on March 23, Lewis
stated, “We are all very grateful
for the hard work of Senator Jill
Vogel, Delegate Scott Lingamfelter
and others to ensure improved
funding for students
in Fauquier County schools
through the new state budget.
Now, the Board of Supervisors
will decide how much local
funding we will receive.”
The current budget indictates
a $3.3 million reduction in local
funding. However, much
of that loss could be made up
by the equalization of taxes. If
the Board of Supervisors sets a
tax rate below equalization, the
budget could be cut again.
The Chronicle
The Winter Olympic
Games are no small affair, so
what does Warrenton have in
common with them? The answer
is the Jamaican bobsled
team, and although you may
not have expected it, Warrenton’s
Mayor George Fitch
plays a big role in both.
Heading into the
1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada, Mayor
Fitch paid a visit to a friend
in Jamaica, and while there,
made a plan to create Olympic
history. With very little
support and only six months
to go, Fitch brought together
a small group of athletes in
order to create the very first
Jamaican bobsled team.
“I knew a bit about
bobsledding; I’d been in a
bobsled a few times, and I
knew that 50 percent of the
race is how quickly can you
push this 600 pound object
before you’ve got to jump in,”
stated Fitch. “My goal was, if
we’re going to do this, we’re
not going to embarrass ourselves.
We’re going to be competitive;
we’re going to beat
some teams, and therefore,
make Olympic history.”
While attempting to
recruit athletes for the team,
Fitch faced another challenge;
no current Olympic
athletes, at the time, would
stop their training to risk his
seemingly crazy idea. When
that failed, he instead turned
to the military to find his
team: the current military
sprint and 800 meter champions,
a helicopter pilot, and
a heavyweight boxer. The
team soon coined the name of
the “Ragamuffins.” However,
Fitch was forced to take approximately
$85,000 out of
his own life savings in order
to fund his new group.
“I went to the Jamaican
government; they said no,
we don’t think you can pull
this off,” Fitch stated. “Went
to the Jamaican companies;
this is too crazy, you’re not
going to pull this off. Went to
international companies like
Coca Cola, other companies
that sponsor teams, they said
no. So I realized nobody’s go-
NEVER, EVER GIVE UP- Mayor Fitch tells Kettle Run his story of founding the underdog Jamaican Bobsled
team.
ing to give me money, so I’ve
got to dip into my own wallet.”
From the money he
withdrew, the team paid for
travel expenses to practice
for the first time on a real
bobsled track, where they
came ahead of a few other
teams. Ten days before the
opening ceremonies of the
Olympics, however, Fitch received
a call from the International
Olympic Committee.
The committee delivered
some bad news. Members
told Fitch they would not be
permitted to race for fear of
embarrassing Jamaica. With
the help of a team supporter,
he was able to get back into
the games with hardly any
time lost.
They competed in the
two-man event and were very
successful. The team longed
to do the 4-man event next,
though they had not trained
for it, and their dedication to
the sport won over the support
of Fitch. When the team
entered for the event, they
had the second largest applause
from the stands, close
behind Canada.
The “moment of
truth” is how Fitch described
it. “Are you going to make
Olympic history, or are you
going to embarrass yourself?”
For the first two
runs, the team did very well.
On the second day, during
their third run, there was a
problem. Coming around the
“50/50” turn, the driver didn’t
have the sled completely under
control, causing them to
flip over. Luckily, no one was
injured in the accident. The
team was able to overcome
its misfortune. Team members
climbed out of the sled,
stood up smiling, and carried
the bobsled across the finish
line. They had achieved their
goal; they had made an unforgettable
event in Olympic
histoy.
The team’s inspiring
story of success led way
to another; the 1993 Disney
movie Cool Runnings. The
movie is loosely based on the
team’s experiences over the
period of time before, and
during, the Winter Olympics,
yet, there were many inaccuracies
throughout the film.
Fitch requested creative and
editorial control after reading
the script, but received
no real input in it.
“There were a lot of humorous
moments in real
life,” said Fitch. “It’s not like,
okay, you want to bring a comedic
element to this. Hey,
I’ve got all kinds of stories for
you that give people a laugh
as to what actually happened
to us.”
Although the movie grossed
$86 million internationally,
Fitch and the members of the
bobsled team received little
of Disney’s profits. Though
it did not turn out the way
they may have hoped, Fitch
still lists the experiences he
gained from being with the
team as some of his proudest.
“Jamaica bobsled would
be up there in the top five,”
commented Fitch. “It was an
experience, where on the one
hand, you will always sort of
look back and it will bring
a smile to your face, but an
experience where it will also
bring a scowl to your face because
of all the things you
didn’t do because you’re so
consumed in pulling this off.
I did not enjoy the Olympics;
I could have enjoyed
the Olympics, but I was just
too taken with having to do
all these things without any
help, and so obsessed with
making sure they were competitive
that you didn’t really
have time to enjoy it.”
Fitch left the team in
1994, and overall feels that
he has no regrets from his
time spent with them. The
Jamaican bobsled team has
led to six other “unlikely”
teams from the Caribbean in
recent years. However, Jamaica
was unable to qualify
for either the 2006 Winter
Games in Turin, Italy or the
2010 Winter Games in Vancouver,
Canada.
From the many challenges
and rewards that Fitch has
been a part of, he has gathered
some valuable advice for
anyone who has been inspired
by stories like his own.
“So what if you fail? You
just try again,” said Fitch.
“You’ll come up with another
idea; you’ll be inspired by
something else. There will
always be another chance,
so don’t let it slip away. If
you’ve got something, follow
through, persevere; take
it all the way, and you will
succeed. Maybe not the first
time, but you will succeed.
Never, ever give up.”
Teens Waiting Longer to Get Driver’s License
cense in 2008 compared with
44.7 in 1988.
There are multiple
reasons why teens have been
waiting. Experts suggest
teens feel it’s not a necessity
because they’re already
so connected with friends
through social networking
and text messages.
Others suggest that the
expense of driving is holding
teens back. Many are not
able to afford gasoline and
insurance.
Senior Stephanie Hoffman
does not have a driver’s
license and is getting ready
to graduate from high school
in June. “It seems as if teens
don’t feel the need to get a
license,” Hoffman said, although
she is thinking about
getting her license soon.
Senior Matt Bongiovi has
been a travel student the past
two years and decided that
taking the bus would save
him money. “Since I never
needed a car, I never got my
license,” said Bongiovi
Although students
have been waiting, many do
plan to get their license.
Senior Jenny Pacheco and
Hoffman both plan on get-
ting their license this coming
summer.
Bongiovi plans to get it
after his first year of college,
“that way I will not be paying
a year’s worth of insurance
on a car that I wouldn’t
be able to drive, and I can
get my license without taking
behind the wheel once
I turn 19,” Bongiovi explained.

A Look Inside the Journalism Class
By Ginny Barrett
Staff writer
Students who like to write,
make videos, and keep up
with news and events around
the school may be interested
in taking journalism.
Journalisms students
research and write stories
for The Chronicle, take
photos to accompany those
stories, make the videos for
the morning announcements,
sell ads, and learn to design
pages in Adobe InDesign.
“I like the class because
I like writing and taking
pictures,” said junior
Sarah Ferguson, who took
journalism I this fall.
Another student’s favorite
thing about the class is
the teacher. “I like how Mrs.
Norden always helps us and
is really caring and personal
with the students,” said senior
Conner Massei.
The Chronicle contains
many different stories
in each issue, so the staff
writes about all sorts of different
topics ranging from
sports, movies, local news
and events, music, and how
things worldwide are affecting
Fauquier County.
March is National
Honors Society Awareness-
Month. Most people know
someone in the National
Honor Society, and that
they meet sometimes to accomplish
“stuff” but what
do they actually do?
This month (as well
as being NHS Awareness
Month) is the month when
sophomores who are eligible
(3.5 GPA or higher, involved
in the school and/or
extracurricular activities)
received a letter in their
homeroom inviting them to
join NHS.
Of the percentage of eligible
sophomores, many said
they were interested in joining
because it looks good on
college applications. However,
beyond that, they had
no idea what the purpose
behind NHS was.
Mrs. Beverly Hagberg,
one of the NHS sponsors,
stated that the general
purpose of NHS is community
service. and with a little
bit of research, it turns
out NHS was started in
1921 for that very reason.
Led by Chet Szwejkowski,
the NHS at Kettle
Run meets in Mrs. Hagberg’s
room the first Tuesday
of every month. During
these meetings, members
brainstorm ways to help
the community. However,
her first year in the class.
opinions.
“Writing stories can
be fun, but the hardest part
is getting quotes,” said Ferguson.
“Getting quotes for
stories allows me to walk
around the school and talk to
my friends,” said Massei.
Each page of the
newspaper needs photos
and the newspaper staff is
responsible for taking them.
Students use Photoshop to
crop and adjust the color of
the photos.
if you are not in the NHS,
don’t worry: they just set up
the community service. They
still need donations and volunteers!
Ashley West, a member
of NHS, urges everyone
who is invited, to join. “It is
really fun! Everyone is really
nice, and we have a lot of fun
together. It [being in the National
Honor Society] looks
“Being a photographer
makes me feel powerful!
And it’s fun,” Ferguson
exclaimed.
The videos that are
seen every morning are
also created by the journalism
class. The class works
in pairs, or small groups, to
write scripts, tape, and edit
the videos. Students learn to
use the video cameras and
how to upload and edit the
film.
“It’s really fun making
videos for the morning
announcements, especially
when I get to work with Olivia
Christopher,” said senior
Stephanie Hoffman, who has
been taking journalism since
eighth grade.
Students also try to
sell ads to local businesses,
which can be hard. These ads
appear in The Chronicle and
the money made is used to
offset the printing fees.
“I don’t sell ads, I
never have. I just don’t like
strangers,” said Ferguson.
Other students have tried
to sell ads but were not very
successful. “I tried to sell
some, it never worked,” said
Massei.
Some students sold them
to parents who own businesses.
“I sold one to my dad,”
said Hoffman.
Finally, all the completed
stories, their accompanying
photos, and any ads
sold, will be placed on their
pages. Students are responsible
for designing and placing
these items on the page.
The class then edits the pages
and stories for errors.
“My favorite part of
the class is using InDesign to
design pages,” said Hoffman.
Anyone interested in
these activities should consider
taking journalism next
year.
Teens’
Consumption
of
Media
Grows
By Sarah Ferguson
Staff Reporter
Facebook and
MySpace, The Jersey
Shore and American Idol,
Call of Duty and Rock
Band; these things are
taking over a vast majority
of teenagers’ lives.
In a recent study
done by the Henry J.
Kaiser Family Foundation,
it was found that
on average, teenagers
spend about 7.5 hours
a day consuming some
form of media. This has
increased two hours in
only five years. This includes
television, video
games, music, phone and
computer use.
About four and
a half hours are spent
watching television, two
and a half listening to
music, about an hour and
a half on the computer
and a little over an hour
playing video games per
day.
With social networking
sites such as
Twitter, Facebook, MySpace,
and Tumblr to
check, teenagers’ Internet
usage increases. Less
time is spent going out
places, doing homework,
or studying, and more
time is spent tweeting or
playing things like Farmville.
“I have a MySpace
and a Facebook,”
said junior Virginia Barrett.
“But I don’t get on
every day.”
Approximately
66% of all teenagers own
cell phones, which is an
increase of 27% in only
five years. A lot of teenagers
are self-proclaimed
“text-addicts” and spend
most of the day and
even into the night while
they’re trying to sleep
texting or talking on
their phones.
“I use my phone
all day, except during
school,” said Barrett. “I
text until I fall asleep.”
The newspaper and
magazine industry is
seeing harsh side effects
to this increase in media
consumption.
With all the news
posted on the Internet or
television, a decrease in
the purchase of items on
the newsstands is happening.

Major Snow Sto
Staff Reporter
The second major
snow of the season hit
Fauquier County on February
5, forcing Kettle Run to close
its doors for nearly three
weeks. Parts of Fauquier
County received up to three
feet of snow.
“I think we got 24
inches,” freshman Cameron
Rijke said.
Some students and
teachers were left without
power. “I lost power for 26
hours,” journalism teacher
Shelly Norden said. “My
house was frigid. We kept
could. The power came back
on right before the Super
Bowl started.”
Sophomore Taylor
Campbell lost power for
three days. “The worst part
was I had to read a book in
two days since I didn’t have
T.V.,” Campbell said.
Others had power,
but were stuck inside their
homes for days waiting for
the plows to come and dig
them out. “My car was stuck
in the driveway for three
weeks,” junior Stephanie
Shipe said.
“I was stuck at a
friend’s house for four days,”
freshman Claudia Ventura
said.
When everyone
started to dig out of the
snow, Fauquier County was
hit again with several more
inches of snow and blizzardlike
conditions. “I wanted to
cry when I heard news of the
next storm,” Norden said.
Virginia code states
that when schools are closed
for six days or more, the
schools must make up the
first five days, plus one day
of every two days missed
in excess of the first five.
However, the superintendent
may ask the state for a
waiver, to forgive those
missed days, if more than 15
days are missed.
Since 13 days were
missed, the School Board
voted to combine marking
periods 1 and 2 and only issue
a report card after marking
period 2 for this semester.
It was also decided that all
students would receive an
“informal” update as to what
their grade is on or about
March 8th. March 11th is
no longer a conference day
but a regular school day, and
spring break remains intact.
Mercury Switch is a Favorite Among Students
By Zach Baker
Staff Reporter
What is Mercury
Switch? Mercury Switch,
noun: an especially quiet
switch that opens and closes
an electric circuit by shifting
a pool of mercury to cover or
uncover the contacts. What is
the meaning behind that?
There isn’t any. It is
just a cool name that Chet Szwejkowski
and Steven Lane
found. They were sitting in
English class one day and
opened up a dictionary and
saw that name on the page.
They then looked at each other
and decided to make that
the band name. “It was way
better than Ask” said Szwejkowski.
There are four members
of Mercury Switch. Chet
Swejkowski and Lawrence
Ayers, seniors at Kettle Run,
play guitar and vocals. Ryan
Newby plays bass, and drummer
Steven Lane attends
Fauquier and Liberty.
real.
Many of the cast performances
are motion-captured,
good performance.
MOVIE REVIEW: On Valentines Day
easy to understand, had
happy moments and sad moments
(but nothing too serious)
and it also had some serious
eye-candy. At one hour
and 57 minutes, it’s hard to
say whether it is worth the
time and money; I think it
seriously depends on the
person (or people). However,
I would say: wait. While this
movie was good and fun, it
will be just as good (if not
better) in your house as it
was in theaters…waiting a
few weeks is worth the extra
$10, especially in these
times.
I loved this movie,
and I was really glad to see
it, but I would be equally as
glad to have seen at home,
on my couch.

Noises Off Is On!
By Rachel Bongiovi
Staff Reporter
After over three
months of practice, countless
weeks designing the
set, over a month and a half
of building and painting the
set, and many, many hours
spent doing everything it
takes to put on a production,
Noises Off had its premier
shows Friday and Saturday
night March 5th and
6th. The play was produced
and directed by the Kettle
Run theatre teacher, Ms.
Dillon. Mr. Smith designed
the two-story set which was
constructed by Mr. Smith
along with other adult and
student volunteers. By
the time everything was
in place, the cast and crew
had high hopes for their hilarious
comedy and couldn’t
wait for opening night.
After the Noises Off
premier, the cast and crew
had nothing but good things
to say about how the shows
went.
“I think they went
amazing! Opening night
especially, everything just
went absolutely perfect!”
commented freshman Hannah
Fakoury who plays
“Brooke”.
Junior Michael Parrish,
or “Gary”, says, “They
both went amazingly well!
I wish I could relive both
nights over and over again!”
Director and producer
of Noises Off, Ms. Dillon
agreed with the cast.
“I thought they went
spectacularly; especially
Friday night.”
After spending three
months practicing Noises
Off, the actors were able to
really develop and connect
with their characters.
“I love everything about
my character! He’s
like my child! But I especially
love how he can never
seem to say what he wants
to say.” Commented Parrish.
She was really fun to play
who played the crazy and unpredictable
“Dotty”, said,
“My favorite thing
about playing Dotty would
have to be that she’s a little
nutso so I really had no set of
of crazy things in front of a
lot of people, which felt really
liberating.”
“My favorite part
about playing Poppy was
being able to be a British,
grungy-looking, nervous
wreck. The character is so
extremely different from my
actual personality, that it
made acting that much more
family’s home, but his efforts
to conceal the nature
of his relationship to the
Noises Off is the first fulllength
Commented sophomore Emily
Sophomore assistant director
but she really stuck with us
and made the show phenomenal!
So thanks for all your
hard work and time everybody!
This was an amazing
Baseball Players Look Forward
to Successful Season
By Rachel Bongiovi
Staff Reporter
The baseball team is
at the start of it’s second season.
William Thorpe returns
as varsity coach and has high
hopes for the season.
The Kettle Run baseball
team’s goals for this season
are to improve this season,
win districts, and ultimately
win regionals.
Kettle Run baseball
players have high expectations
for their team this year.
“We were a young team last
year and still did well, so now
that we have that experience
under our belts, we’ll be even
better,” commented first
baseman Riley Caito.
“I always have high
expectations, whether it be
for myself or our team,” said
utility player Justin Rodriguez.
The baseball team
expects to do a lot better this
season versus last year. “Yes,
[we will do better than last
year because] we’re all more
experienced than last season,”
stated Caito.
“Yes, [we will do
better than last season because]
all of our players have
excelled exceptionally this
year,” said catcher David
Stuart.
Players say they
very much enjoy playing on
this team. “Everybody on
the team is cool with one another,
and we have a good
time at practices and games
but still get work done,” commented
Caito.
“I love how close our
team is. We are all friends off
the field, and we believe that
helps with the team chemistry,”
said Rodriguez.
This may only be the
baseball team’s second year,
but many players have a lot
of prior experience. “[I have
been playing baseball] since
I was six,” said Caito.
“[I have been playing
baseball] since I was three,”
commented Stuart.
“I started playing
about 12 years ago,” stated
Rodriguez.
Coach Thorpe played
baseball from age five
through college and said,
“When I stopped playing I
knew coaching was for me.”
Coach Thorpe says his coaching
method is, “relaxed, fast
paced, and I expect my guys
to work hard every day.” His
coaching method seemed to
work well last year considering
the team went to the district
semi-finals.
The teams’ next
home game will be on
April 13 th against Warren
County High.
Trainers say they
have learned a great deal
from Swick. “I have been
anulsions, lacerations,
punctures, contusions, ankle
sprains, pulled muscles,
and broken fingers,” boys’
soccer trainer Emily Kono-
March is National Training Month
all over the body, but we
usually call Swick over for
the serious ones.”
“Trainers are taught
how to treat multiple types
of injuries, such as open and
closed wounds, sprains and
strains, shoulder and knee
injuries and many more,”
said boys’ soccer trainer Morgan
Roush.
Trainers had different
reasons for entering the
field. “Before I was a trainer,
I always got hurt and I was
always in the training room,”
Konoza said. “The trainers
always seem to have a lot of
fun, and Sports Medicine has
always interested me, so I
decided to become a trainer.”
Trainer Kaitlyn Cunningham
said, “I’m an athlete
when I get out
said Cunningham.
Konoza said, “I
would love to
go into sport’s
going into medicine.”
“I would love to become a
Kettle Run Makes Regional’s Only To End Season
Kettle Run played
the Charlottesville Black
basketball had a strong season
with an overall 11 wins
and 7 losses, 4 wins and 1
loss in Districts, a 3-way tie
with Liberty and Fauquier
in the Evergreen District
as a Regional II Division 3
Semifinalist.
With the Cougars being
third and Charlottesville
being second in the Division,
the players seemed confident
when stepping onto the court.
“I just kept telling myself, we
got this,” said senior Spencer
“I’d be lying if I said
I wasn’t nervous; it’s such a
huge turnout for us to make
regionals, and it would have
been awesome to win states,”
said senior Brian Mills
Although the team
stayed strong, they knew who
they were going up against
a tough team. “They’re not
a team you can overlook;
they’re very athletic, but
have a slow defensive side.
Hopefully, we can get them
there, but we can’t give up,”
said senior David Noonan
Boys’ Soccer Kicks off New Season
“We be all the way
Turnure about this year’s
varsity soccer team.
Players and the coach
have high hopes for the season.
“We should improve on
last season and look to contend
for a district title,” said
head coach Phillip Roper.
Next year Brooke
Redmon, middle blocker on
the varsity volleyball team,
will be playing volleyball
with a full scholarship to
Delaware.
“A couple of DII and
DIII schools were talking
to Brooke,” Coach Krystal
Hermes said. “Brooke has
a quick arm swing which
helps her hit the ball hard
and fast. She also has developed
her hitting skills to
diversify herself as a hitter,
being able to hit any spot on
the court with different ball
speeds.”
“It was a really hard
decision, but when I made
the choice, it was the best
feeling,” Redmon said.
our season will be fun this
year. We have a real talented
team. If we stay focused,
we could do great.”
Turnure said, “I
think we will go to states.”
Although the team
is excited about the season,
they know some tough competition
lies ahead. “Brentsville
is always tough and
should be one of the better
teams,” Roper said.
Bourdeau agreed.
“Brentsville will be our
toughest. There were best
in the district last year, but
they lost seniors. Our whole
squad is returning.”
Two new teams were
added to the line up this season.
“We play Fauquier and
Liberty for the first time, so
we’ve got the whole county
rivalry think going on there.
It will be tough,” Roper ex-
Brooke Redmon spikes the ball past an opponent.
made college far less stressful
for Redmon. “Just knowing I
didn’t have to go through the
whole ‘college process’, that
a lot of my friends did, was
awesome.” Redmon said.
Redmon didn’t have
to stress about applications,
essays, money, and every-
thing else about applying to
college.
Going out of state
Redmon is excited for college.
“Delaware is only about
to come home I can.” Redmon
said.
Redmon plans on
Troy Washington saw many
plained.
The team is working
on a number of things,
but most importantly “staying
positive, staying focused,
working hard, and having
fun – all at the same time,”
Roper said.
In order to raise
money, the team is hosting a
fundraiser. They will be selling
mulch in April. See coach
Roper for details.
Redmon will miss
her high school games
though. “Our high school
games were, by far, the
most fun,” Redmon said,”
The fans and support we
had was amazing, and
Zack Baker better keep up
the same spirit next year!”
“It was a really
hard decision, but
when I made the
best feeling,”
miss Redmon. “Brooke is a
improvements. “This season
was a huge difference compared
to last season. We had
six seniors return, which was
a huge help,” said Washington.
“They were like big
brothers to the younger players.
Saying goodbye to them
was tough, but I hope for the
best in their futures.”
“I’m definitely going
to miss our home
Some of the teammates
are sad to see the second
been playing for 10 years,
(and since its almost over),
I’m really going to miss my
teammates, the atmosphere
of big games, and Kelci Riley
Girls’ Tennis Swings Into New Season
By Martinia Gargiano
Features Editor
The girls’ tennis team
has high hopes for this season.
Twenty seven girls tried
out for the team: twelve were
chosen.
First seed player Jesica
Doyle hopes “everybody
will become a team and win
more games”. There are several
players who have tennis
experience. Third seed Marion
Silas has been playing “on
and off for three years”. Fifth
seed player Becca Haldi has
been playing for two years.
Players joined the
team for different reasons.
“My dad wanted me to play,
so I started, and now I like
it,” Doyle said.
“My sister played, so
I decided to start too,” second
seed Amanda Davis said.
Tennis players prefer
different aspects of this
sport. “The thing that I like
most about tennis is the outfits,”
Davis said.
“I love how close the
team gets and the fact that
that you can play with a partner
or alone,” Silas said.
Playing tennis requires
a lot of body strength
and “very good coordination,”
fourth and seventh seed players
Megan Graap and Tina
Kwarteng said.
Players say they enjoy
the sport and hope to con-
tinue playing it for years to
come. “I would just like to
keep doing it for fun,” Silas
said.
“I would not do it as a
job because it is just a hobby
for me,” tenth seed player
Anne Eastman said.
Hockey
Team Rolls
into Season
Two
By Rachel Bongiovi
News Editor
Did you know
Kettle Run has a hockey
team?
Junior Blake Owens
and Coach John Rathbone
created the Kettle
Run hockey team at the beginning
of the school year.
Although it is referred to
as the “Kettle Run” hockey
team, the team also includes
students from Fauquier
and Oakton. In its
second season, the hockey
team currently stands at a
3-5-1 record.
Students on the
Kettle Run Hockey team
enjoy playing hockey for
many different reasons. “I
like playing on the team
because I get to play with
all my friends from school,”
said junior Blake Owens.
Sophomore Marcus
Toms said he likes
playing on the team because,
“everyone is always
friendly, even if you make
a bad mistake.”
Although students
on the Kettle Run hockey
team come from different
schools, this does not seem
to pose a problem when
it comes to team bonding.
“All the players understand
their roles and work
well together, “stated
Coach Rathbone.
Freshman Chase
Rathbone commented, “I
don’t think people coming
from different schools
has affected us; we are all
friends.”
While all the players
continue to improve, a
few students are identified
as team leaders. “[The star
players are] Blake Owens,
Nick Succop, and Chase
Rathbone,” commented
Coach Rathbone.
The team’s goals
for the rest of the season
are to win enough games
to go to the playoffs, and to
keep improving each game
by working on fundamentals.
“I’m very proud of all
my players, they continue
to play hard and we have
already improved greatly
over the fall season,” stated
Coach Rathbone.
The hockey team’s
season is almost over, but
the team is looking for
players for next season.
Students who are interested
in joining should
purchase their own hockey
gear and contact Owens
or Rathbone.
