NISD has two Region 20<br />

Teachers of the Year!<br />

For the fourth consecutive year,<br />

NISD claims a Region 20 Teacher<br />

of the Year – times two for this<br />

year. Barbara Purkhiser, a second<br />

grade teacher at Galm ES, is the<br />

Region 20 Elementary Teacher of<br />

the Year, <strong>and</strong> Theresa Heim, the<br />

AVID coordinator <strong>and</strong> reading<br />

teacher at Connally MS, is the<br />

Region 20 Secondary Teacher<br />

of the Year. Heim recently was<br />

named <strong>one</strong> of six finalists in<br />

the state <strong>and</strong> will now vie for<br />

Secondary Teacher of the Year.<br />

Both Heim <strong>and</strong> Purkhiser will be<br />

honored at a luncheon in Austin<br />

Oct. 19, when statewide winners<br />

will be announced.<br />

Siller to be honored<br />

during national<br />

symposium<br />

Rosie Siller, Cable ES Principal,<br />

will be visiting Washington, D.C.<br />

this week as part of a Texas<br />

delegation <strong>with</strong> the P<strong>are</strong>nts Step<br />

Ahead Teacher Ambassador<br />

initiative. Participants, who include<br />

two counselors, two principals,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong> teacher, will have<br />

meetings <strong>with</strong> their delegations<br />

in Congress, <strong>and</strong> tour the White<br />

House, Capitol, <strong>and</strong> Pentagon.<br />

The highlight of the visit will be<br />

their participation in the National<br />

Latina Symposium at which they<br />

will be recognized for their school<br />

engagement <strong>with</strong> p<strong>are</strong>nts.<br />

Arteaga to serve as TEPSA<br />

District 20 President<br />

Dr. Veronica Arteaga, Passmore<br />

ES Principal, has been tapped to<br />

serve as District 20 President for<br />

the Texas Elementary Principals<br />

<strong>and</strong> Supervisors Association<br />

(TEPSA).<br />

<strong>Ross</strong> MS, <strong>Esparza</strong> ES, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Martin</strong><br />

ES hit the streets to visit families<br />

in their neighborhoods to let them<br />

know that they were excited about<br />

seeing them at school <strong>and</strong> provide<br />

any back-to-school information that<br />

they might need.<br />

City <strong>and</strong> state officials joined<br />

Superintendent Brian Woods to<br />

provide words of inspiration <strong>and</strong><br />

appreciation to staff members prior to the block walk. Speakers included state Sen. Leticia Van<br />

de Putte, state Rep. Joaquin Castro, State Board of Education Member Michael Soto, former San<br />

Antonio City Councilman Justin Rodriguez, <strong>and</strong> San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.<br />

Members of the Holmes HS marching b<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> cheerleading squad also performed.<br />

The principals of the three schools joined together in hopes of increasing attendance <strong>and</strong> p<strong>are</strong>nt<br />

involvement <strong>and</strong> to strengthen the relationship between school staff <strong>and</strong> families.<br />

“Today we’re showing the community our classroom extends beyond these walls,” <strong>Ross</strong> Principal<br />

Lisa McConoghy said.<br />

Warren AFJROTC <strong>team</strong> places 2nd in<br />

national competition<br />

The Warren HS JROTC Academic<br />

Team placed second at the<br />

National JROTC Leadership <strong>and</strong><br />

Academics Bowl held this summer<br />

in Fairfax, Va.<br />

To qualify, the <strong>team</strong> had to<br />

advance through two rounds of<br />

competitive online play, placing<br />

high enough to represent the<br />

hundreds of schools <strong>with</strong> AFJROTC<br />

in the region. Only 16 AFJROTC<br />

<strong>team</strong>s worldwide advanced to the national competition.<br />

Competition included rounds <strong>with</strong> questions covering math, science, social studies, <strong>and</strong> English<br />

varying in difficulty <strong>and</strong> point value. They advanced through the various rounds, <strong>and</strong> finally<br />

faced the eventual winner, Scripps Ranch High School from San Diego, Calif.<br />

“We <strong>are</strong> so proud of our cadets,” said Capt. Kevin Keaney, Senior Aerospace Science<br />

teacher. “They prep<strong>are</strong>d extremely hard for this competition <strong>and</strong> it showed. They represented<br />

our school, city, <strong>and</strong> state <strong>with</strong> class <strong>and</strong> dignity.”<br />

Target “Partner in Learning” grant.<br />

Thirty-five selected for AIM<br />

Learning never stops <strong>and</strong> that certainly is true for 35 current <strong>and</strong> future Northside<br />

administrators who <strong>are</strong> members of the 2012-13 Administrative Internship Management<br />

(AIM) class. The AIM class is a semester-long program that identifies <strong>and</strong> trains potential<br />

administrators.<br />
