WASTE REDUCTION GROUP
2
The Waste REDUCTION Group (trading name of the South Western Regional
Waste Management Group) is a state government agency which was established
in 1997 to assist its member Councils, Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne, Southern
Grampians and Warrnambool City to plan and implement waste management
initiatives.
Over the last 9 years the Group has assisted Councils to close down small
Unlicensed Landfills and to establish Transfer Stations for community use. Not
only has there been a change to our waste facilities within the region but also to
the services we receive at our kerbside. Residents within our major towns now
have access to best practise kerbside collections and can recycle more of their
waste than ever before.
This guide has been produced to encourage the community to look beyond their
bin and to utilise the great recycling services that are available within the south
western region. Rather than throwing that old mobile phone or printer cartridge in
the bin consider the options that are now available to you. We ask that you
consider being waste wise and to maximise your recycling effort.
Neil Povey
Executive Officer
WISE ABOUT WASTE
Being wise about your waste and thinking about
REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE options rather
than putting your waste straight in the bin, we can potentially
save a lot of air space in the landfills that service
the south west region.
A lot of what we call rubbish is actually not rubbish
but a valuable resource.
Approximately 50% of the average household bin is food
& garden waste which can be composted or fed to a
worm farm, creating a new and valuable product rather
than filling up landfill space.
A further 20% of materials are things that can be
recycled. Paper/cardboard, glass, steel, plastics, and
aluminium can all be recycled. These are all valuable
resources that have a lot more life left in them.

Businesses vary in what types of plastics they collect for recycling. For further information as
to what plastics are accepted please contact the listed businesses direct.
A triangle with a number in the middle is part of the Plastics Identification Code.
These symbols identify the plastic type, not whether it can or cannot be recycled.
Your local council and their recycling contractor (or the waste/recycling business)
determines the scope of plastics that they will accept for recycling. For information
about what type of plastics your council accepts for recycling contact your local
council directly. Waste/Recycling businesses will also be able to tell you what
types of plastics they accept for recycling.
From your kerbside
collection, recyclables are
sorted by hand to then be
reprocessed.
HOME COMPOSTING
18
Composting has many benefits—it improves garden soil without using
artificial fertilizers, helps retain water in the soil, reduces greenhouse gas
methane (which is produced by rotting rubbish in tips), saves landfill
space, reduces the cost of rubbish disposal to the community and it is
natures own way of recycling!
COMPOSTING METHODS
There are two methods of composting aerobic
and anaerobic.
Anaerobic means that decomposition occurs
without oxygen. This process is slow and can
give off unpleasant odours, and more
importantly, methane, which is a powerful
greenhouse gas.
In Aerobic decomposition, the breakdown is
caused by the actions of micro-organisms that
thrive in oxygen. It is quite rapid and can cause
the heap to become quite hot and does not
usually produce unpleasant odours.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Getting Started
Choose a shady spot in the garden for your compost bin, enclosure or
heap. Too much sun will dry out your compost.
Put your compost in layers of food scraps, garden clippings and paper.
Just like a lasagna! This helps build up the heat and speed up the
process.
Keep your compost slightly moist and mix it once a month or more.
After 3-4 months or so, when the compost is dark and crumbly, it will be
ready to use. Dig it into your garden beds or spread it on top as mulch.
When working with compost it is
important to wear gloves.
What To Add To Your Compost
COMPOST FAVOURITES
•Fruit & vegetable peelings
•Vegetable oil
•Egg shells
•Flowers & leaves & prunings
•Newspaper
•Tea bags & coffee grounds
•Vacuum dust & wood ash
COMPOST DISLIKES
•Meat & dairy products
•Bones
•Large branches
•Diseased plants
•Magazines
•Pet droppings
•Weeds
Successful Composting
FOOD-Compost needs two types of food—browns (dry materials like straw,
autumn leaves, ash, wood chips, newspapers or saw dust) and greens (fresh
plant material like lawn clippings, food scraps, green leaves and blood and
bone).
AIR- The micro organisms that are doing all the work in your compost to break it
down, need air to work effectively. To ensure that your compost is getting
enough air it is recommended that you turn your compost regularly. Punching
holes in the container or inserting a slotted agricultural pipe into the heap can
also help air move through.
WATER- Ideally, your compost should be as moist as a wrung-out sponge. If it
is drier than this, composting will be slowed down significantly. If it is wetter,
the ingredients will be so heavy they will exclude air from the pile, slowing the
process and creating bad smells.
Compost bins come in many
shapes and sizes.
WORM FARMING
20
Keeping a worm farm is an easy way to cut down on waste, with the added
bonus of creating a fantastic organic fertiliser for your garden and a supply
of fat worms for fishing trips.
And the best thing about a worm farm is that you can keep it anywhere–
they can be kept outside, inside, on the balcony, or in the garage.
Worm farms can be bought from most hardware stores, or you can build
your own using an old bath, trough or box.
Getting Started
Once you have purchased a worm farm, or built
your own, here are a few simple steps to help
get you started.
STEP 1– Find a cool shady spot in which to
locate your worm farm– this is particularly
important over the warm summer months.
STEP 2– Prepare a bedding mix for your
worms– if you have purchased a worm farm this
may be supplied, alternatively here are some
options:
• Purchase a bag of worm castings or peat
moss from your local hardware store and
use this as your bedding mix.
• Mix half a bucket of manure (sheep or
cattle) with a 1/4 bucket of shredded
newspaper. Leave it to settle for 2-3
weeks before using.
• A combination of finished compost,
leaves and newspaper works well as a
bedding mix.
NB: Your bedding mix should be moist– to test, simply squeeze the bedding
in your fist. It is suitable if a few drops of water drip from your hand.
STEP 3– Once your bedding mix is ready, add your worms and commence feeding
them with a small amount of food until they adapt to their new home, then maintain
a food layer of approximately two centimeters. If you are going away on holidays,
increase the food layer and add some newspaper which will provide enough
nutrients until you return home.

STEP 4– Cover the worms with a moist hessian bag or wet newspaper to keep
the moisture in and the light out, encouraging the worms to come to the surface
and feed on the scraps. It will also keep the worm farm cooler in the summer
months.
Photo :http://www.earlybirdwormfarm.com/
Choosing the right worms
Worms like:
Vegetable scraps
Tea leaves
Coffee grounds
Newspaper
Manure (well aged)
Vacuum dust
Egg cartons (soaked)
Composting worms—’tigers’, ‘reds’ and
‘blues’ are the only species that will live,
work and breed in your worm farm.
To get started you will need at least
1000 worms, however the more you
start with the quicker they will consume
your food waste, but remember they will
double their number naturally within a
few months so don't go overboard on
the purchasing of worms!
Feeding time
Worm Fertiliser
Worms don't like:
Onion peel
Garlic
Citrus
*Potato scraps should also be added in
moderation as they may ferment,
leaving you with drunk worms!
Your Worm farm will create two products– worm castings and a liquid fertiliser,
which have a number of uses:
PLANT FERTILISER– spread a small amount of castings around your favourite
plants.
LIQUID FERTILISER– can be used on all plants when diluted with 50% water.
NATIVE TREES & FRUIT TREES– apply around the base drip line & water well.
When recycling, it is important to make sure that everything you put
in your recycling bin can actually be recycled.
By putting items that are not recyclable in your recycling bin, you are
actually causing contamination which affects the recycling process.
If a truck load of recyclables is seen to be too contaminated it won’t
be recycled it will be sent to landfill.
It is important to check with your local Council to see what can and
cannot be placed in your recycling bin to ensure that the recycling
efforts in the south west are not affected by contamination.
