A SEASON OF
SPECTACLE
ILLUMINATION
EVOCATION
It is almost a commonplace to say that ours is a visual
age. More and more of our activities are mediated by the
visual, even the act of listening to music itself: witness the
status of YouTube as a go-to source of all forms of music,
in homes and in music classrooms.
Of course music and imagery have a long, intimate
relationship. A visual element lies at the root of the music
we present, and one can wonder whether music’s graphic
representation in the glorious universal language of
notation has been a spur for composers to think visually
through the ages. Or perhaps our experience of sacred
settings tells us that music, architecture, and visual
iconography emerged from the same source of awe—and
sought to recapture it, each in its own way.
This is a season of spectacle, illumination, and evocation:
Among the profusion of images and works that we present
are an iconic film of the 20th century, Sergei Eisenstein’s
Alexander Nevsky, with a score by Prokofiev; John
Corigliano’s opera The Ghosts of Versailles; the Limon
Dance Company performing Anna Sokolow’s Rooms;
and a collaboration between brass and percussion, with
projections, showcasing Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre.
Among the great luminaries on the concert calendar
this year are Thomas Hampson, Kurt Masur, Philippe
Entremont, and Robert Mann. We also celebrate the
great Stan Kenton’s centennial with a rare opportunity
to hear the breadth of his work, both for full orchestra
and jazz big band.
We hope this focus on the visual will free your imagination
when attending MSM events this season and illuminate
and enliven your concertgoing in years to come.
