What was happening at CEL in 1967?!?!In 1967 your favorite summer home, Camp Echo Lake, was turning 22years old. Morry and Amy Stein were the directors of camp after takingover for Amy’s parents, founders, Bill & Edith Medine. There were alsothree little guys at the time who were not only snazzy dressers, butloved to make the most of Echo Lake’s fields, courts, and fun activitieseven though they were a bit too young to be campers! From the Clipboard of Tony Stein...Children‛s health is such a big topic of conversation today. Three weeks ago at the American CampAssociation‛s National Conference in Austin, Texas, I heard it referenced that the average Americanchild spends 25 minutes per week playing outdoors! I was pretty floored by that, and if there was ever a ringing endorsementfor the camp experience, that was it!Being in the out of doors for the summer, away from all of our gadgets, and counting on ourselves and our friends tocreate our fun – these moments are very precious experiences.Like all of you, I have also heard and read much lately about health and nutrition for our children. In our neverendingquest to provide the most healthy experience for our campers, I have been reviewing our summer food service evenmore closely than normal this year. In fact, I have enlisted the help of Joy Bauer Nutrition, a very well-known firmspecializing in health, wellness and nutrition, to review our summer menus and food service and to provide us with somedirection and suggestions. Some of the changes being made at camp come directly from their input.· Last year we added some new healthier items in the canteen (like baby carrots) at night; this year we will beeliminating sodas in the canteen.· We will be serving fresh fruit only for lunch desserts this summer; in the past, most days we served “sweet”desserts for lunch.· A number of fried entrees on the menu are being replaced by healthier baked or grilled healthier options.· A wider variety of healthier grains (brown rice, whole grain cous cous, for example) will be added as entréeside dishes.· We will be serving more turkey burgers.· Fruit roll-ups will no longer be served as a snack item; they are not very healthy. These are just a few things we are doing this summer in the kitchen and dining room. As always, we will require thatour campers drink lots of water each day. And of course, what better place than camp to provide a wonderful doseof exercise every day.Enjoy the spring – and run around outside as much as you can! TonyHi All You Tasty Little Critters,In less than three months, can you believe it, we will be together again at Echo Lake. That gladdens my heart not to mention the hearts of all of you reading this.It has been an interesting year filled with blessings and many wonderful life cycle events for Echo Lakers and their families. Every once in a while though onehears of sad news, even tragic news, befalling one of our circle of campers and or alums. We belong to a fairly wide network, after all, and a circle of pain radiatesoutward as well as inward. What is significant, I think, is the fact that campers and alums rally ‘round each other in a very special and intimate way - a circlingof the wagons, I guess, when help, support and lovingness is required. It’s as though we’re all part of the same body, and the pain (or joy) felt in one quarter isfelt by all others. Is there anything really that promotes intimacy like sharing the same bunk and group and sometimes for many years ? We see one another in every possible mood, responding to every variety of circumstance when we are within the same four walls, so to speak, for two months. We really come to share deeply. Our need andability to comfort one another at a time of pain and loss is very, very profound. For we have been like brothers and sisters through our summersat camp.Echo Lake is truly a very special family, filled with the best and the brightest of boys and girls, people of depth and values andsensitivity. Most of us who have shared the Echo Lake experience would do anything and everything to help one another in timeof need. I call that a beautiful thing. It makes me feel proud and blessed. I am part of a bedrock, an anchor point of loyalty, love and compassion.I,as well as others, have felt that spectacular sense of family before. I know I will feel it again. I am one very lucky campdirector. Much love to you all, Amy

LaurieF r o m t h e D e s k s o f . . .Main Village Director“You are The Pan. I believe in Peter Pan,” cry the Lost Boys in the movie Hook. Hook begins whenPeter Pan is an adult, a father, who has forgotten that he is Peter Pan, forgotten how to crow, and hasforgotten how to fly. Peter does not believe in himself and does not try to be The Pan. It is only whena few of the devoted and loyal Lost Boys encourage Peter and believe in himself that things begin tochange. Over and over again the Lost Boys supportively proclaim, “I believe in you, Peter Pan.” Unableto believe in himself but compelled by the belief of the Lost Boys Peter begins to try. Peter soonfinds himself crowing and flying. This success and the continued encouragement of the Lost Boys iswhat finally helps Peter to believe in himself. He IS Peter Pan! Hook is a great movie, I highly recommendit, but the reason I bring up “The Pan” is because I think this story is a great example of themagic that happens at camp. Many campers come to camp not believing that they can hit a ball or perform on stage or swim in thelake or climb a mountain. These campers may even feel so caught up in what they think they can’t do that they don’t even want to try. Likethe Lost Boys for Peter, that is when Echo Lake’s amazing staff step in. When devoted and loyal staff encourage the campers and supportivelyproclaim, “I believe in you,” magic happens. Campers may not be able to believe in themselves at this point but they don’t have to…yet. Atfirst the campers can rely on the support and encouragement and belief of their amazing counselors and test the waters a little bit. Maybe theyhit some balls at free play or work on an act for Friday Night Live or take baby steps to test the waters or start up the hill. In their ears they heartheir counselors supportively proclaim, “I believe in you!” Like Peter, campers then go on to do amazing things that they never thought theycould do! That is when the magic kicks in and campers begin to believe in themselves. All of a sudden campers are trying new things, learningnew skills, feeling good about themselves, and shining in a way they may have never thought was possible. Campers then become what theyonce mistakenly thought they never could. It is truly magical! At this time of year the above lessons of Lost Boys and Peter or Staff and Campers come into play as well. Many campers (in fact I would sayalmost all campers), both new to camp and returning veterans get a little nervous at this time of year. Campers are nervous about what campwill be like, who will be their friends, what activities will they like, and even will they be OK being away from home for the summer. This is alltotally normal and understandable. Parents, here’s where YOU come in…like the Lost Boys and the Staff, YOU are the people that must helpyour campers believe in camp and in their ability to succeed at camp. At this time of year it may be difficult for some campers to believe thatthey can be successful at camp and be away from home. They are going to look to you, their parents, to borrow your confidence. The campersmay not believe in themselves right now when it comes to camp, but they definitely believe in YOU their parents. If you show your campersthat you know how great camp is going to be, how much fun they are going to have, and how much YOU believe in THEM, this will show thecampers that you believe that they can and will be happy and successful at camp. Like Peter Pan, your belief will help your campers to takethat first step, test the waters, and use your confidence in them to build their own confidence about camp. Armed with your belief in them theywill begin to belief in themselves and believe in their ability to have a wonderful summer at camp! (*Special Note for Parents…if YOU needhelp “believing,” CALL US in the camp office…WE are thrilled to help give you the tools to believe and we will believe in you!)Campers, Staff, Parents, this is a very exciting time. Starting today and going until the end of the summer we are all in for some magic and thechance to do things that we may not have believed we ever could. Over the next few months we will all get to be the Lost Boys and Peter Pan.We will all have people believe in us. We will all find ways to crow and fly. We will all believe in ourselves. We are Peter Pan. Let the magicbegin! Get ready for an amazing summer…it’s only the beginning! Love & Hugs, LaurieThe Village Voice...JPSenior Village DirectorGood Morning Senior Village!OK, maybe it’s not the morning when you read this but I thought I’d at least get you guys excited forthe summer. I think I was commenting about the nice winter we were having in my last trail article andI think it’s come back to haunt me! We have been dumped on over the past few weeks in upstate NewYork. Camp has right around three feet of snow right now! I’ve been taking Nelson on walks aroundcamp and he has a hard time running in the snow and he’s huge! It’s hard to imagine that in only fourmonths this place will be full of campers and staff in t-shirts and shorts.I’ve always been big on keeping a calendar and counting down days to big events such as the start ofNFL training camp, the NFL draft, NFL free agency, the first weekend of NFL games, oh yeah and ofcourse the first day of camp! You need things to get you excited when you are knee high in snow and it gets dark at 5PM. So if you guys aretired of school, work, or anything else remember that the summer is getting closer and camp is right around the corner. There are a few thingsyou can always count on in life, your parents will always be smarter than you, Echo Lake has an endless supply of fuzzies, and the Senior Villagemy be the most awesome place ever (you guys can use that if you want just give me a high five in return or something). I hope everyoneis doing well and I will be talking to you again in a few months!Stay Gold,JP

Fun with Fine Arts!!!!At Home Do - It - Yourself Activity AreasEveryday, people everywhere engage in some form ofphysical exercise. We know that physical activities developcertain muscles in our bodies and lead to a morehealthy life. Let’s think for a moment of the mind as twomuscles. One muscle is used when we do things involvingwords like reading a book, writing a letter, or listeningto someone talk. The other muscle is used for “visual”things like recognizing a face of someone we’ve seen before, reading a map, or remembering a place we’ve been. This other muscle also controls our daydreaming, flightsof fantasy, and our imagination. Like athletes, artists developtheir “visual muscles” by continuous practice anduse. They practice by looking at things closely, drawingthem, and recording them in their minds’ eye.Materials You Need: a pencil and drawing paper. What To Do: Here are some “push-ups” you can do inyour classroom or home to exercise your “visual muscle.”Each one can be done again and again for practice..Draw a picture of something (like a bicycle or shoe)showing it from three different views on the same page..Take an object apart & then draw it. (Get permission!).Fill a page with drawings of bugs, sea shells, or somethingyou collect..Examine an object for one minute. Put the object away. Then draw a picture of what you remember about it. Whenyou finish drawing, look at the object again...Use a magnifying glass to draw enlarged views of waterdrops, hair, plant leaves, and other small items..Go through a magazine and cut out a photograph ofsomething you enjoy or find interesting to look at. Draw apicture of this image--only turn it upside down. (This willmake you look closely at what you’re drawing.).Show someone how to do something (like making a paperairplane) in a sequence of drawn pictures (with as fewwords as possible.).Draw yourself by looking in a mirror..Draw a family member or friend from memory..Draw your pet or go to a zoo and draw the animals..Draw a map showing your route from home to school.Include local landmarks..Sit under a tree & draw it from your point of view. Drawthings in your backyard from unusual points-of-view..Take your shoe off and examine it. Feel its contours, lookinside it, turn it upside down. Draw a picture of it. Try thiswith other objects around the house.Want To Do More? Make up your own “visual push-ups”to do. Date each of your exercises and keep them all in aportfolio or sketchbook so you can check your progressand growth over time.Have fun and keepcreating.Artistically yours,Sara GoldFine ArtsHead SpecialistHi everyone! I hope thatall of you are having a greatwinter and are looking forwardto camp as much as Iam! I had a chance to beup at camp for both the seniorvillage and main villagewinter weekends----wehad a great time and if youdidn’t have a chance to go,make sure you get it on your calendar so that you can bewith us next year! On the main village weekend we spentthe first day at the incredible indoor water park next toGreat Escape – even though there was three feet of snowon the ground, we were inside splashing, sliding, and tubing---havinga blast! Anyway, I started thinking about howall of you can get ready for all of our amazing waterfrontprograms this summer, so you can enjoy all of the activitieswe offer.Although I know that a number of you are on swim teamsand swim regularly, I know that many of you do most ofyour swimming in the summer. If you are new to swimmingor want to move on from a beginner level, the thingI’d recommend most is to sign up for lessons at your localY or community recreation center. This will give you thebasics so that you will be able to jump right into the programat camp. For those of you who have pretty good strokes but aren’ton a swim team, there is no substitute for a little regularpractice before camp. You should start by doing your beststroke for two laps and then resting in between. Make sureyou practice both on your front and your back – the basicstrokes (front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke) are theones on which you’ll want to concentrate on. Once you cando two laps of each one, move up to three and so on—untilyou can do four laps pretty easily. In addition, make surethat you work on treading water - -in order to be a “deep”at camp, you’ll need to be able to tread for two minutes, aminute for earning “middle” status. One of the most important points I’d like to emphasize isthat if you are not too confident around the water, don’tworry!!!!! We have a great swim program for all abilitiesand one of the things that our staff is the best at is helpingbeginning swimmers gain the experience, skills and confidencethey need to enjoy all the water activities we offerat camp!As I sit here at my computer we have just had a snow dayfrom school and the wind chill is about -20 outside! It’shard to believe but in less than 100 days I’ll be at the pooland lake in the warm summer sun, watching you learn newskills and having a blast!See you in June!Terry BeglyWaterfront Head SpecialistWonderful waterfront!

Amazing activities at “The Lake”!!!!At Home Do - It - Yourself Activity AreasI hope you’ve all been practicing cooking and baking or atleast helping your parents when they ask, because it’s funmixing, blending and shaking it up in the kitchen! This recentdiscovery has become a family favorite which meansthat I’m making it often and it’s obviously something withchocolate.Okay everyone, prepare to get your hands a little dirty! So…wash your hands first as you always do and smile alot when you’re making them. You definitely will be askingto make these at camp!Soft & Chewy Chocolate BitesThe wonderful chocolatey taste and melt-in-your-mouthtexture of a brownie in the form of a cookie!Ingredients:4 squares unsweetened chocolate3/4 cup butter2 cups sugar3 eggs1 tsp vanilla2 cups flourDirections:Preheat oven to 350Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwaveablebowl on High 2 minutes or until butter is melted.Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in sugar.Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add flour; mix well.Refrigerate 15 minutes or until dough is easy to handle.Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place 2 inches apart ongreased baking sheets.Bake 8 minutes or just until set (do not over bake).Let stand on baking sheet 1 minute; transfer to wire racksand cool completely.Makes 5 dozen.ADDICTING IS ALL I CAN SAY!Kitchen Tip:Since this recipe makes a lot of cookies, you can freezesome of the dough balls on a tray for 15 minutes & thenput them in a freezer bag. This way you can take out asmany cookies as you want to bake the next time you wantto eat them.Snapple Fact #338:In 2003, a 6 year old from Naples, Florida was ticketed fornot having a permit for her lemonade stand.Bon Appetit!Renee Pearl-SiglerCookingHead SpecialistWhat’s Cookin’ in the Kitchen?!?!
