HARU MATSURI 2009KimonoAre you tired of the snow?With the weather forecasterspredicting huge amountsof snow for the winter of2008/2009, everyone will besure to want a change bythe beginning of March. TheJapanese Canadian CulturalCentre (JCCC) can guaranteethat spring will arrive on March7 and 8, 2009! The JCCCwill be opening their doors toeveryone as they celebrate aweekend filled with activities,entertainment and exhibits atHaru Matsuri 2009!!This year’s theme isKimono. For many peoplethis traditional costume is often associated with the image of theJapanese woman. However, few people may realize that kimonois a word that encompasses a huge range of clothing from thestyle to the materials that are used to construct them. We hope toshow our visitors a variety of kimono through the costumes of ourentertainers, displays and demonstrations.The JCCC Heritage Committee will also be featuring a displayof Netuske. Netsuke are small toggles, traditionally carved out ofivory, that are used to secure a pouch or container to the obi (sash)of a kimono.Haru Matsuri will also include Japanese arts and craftsdemonstrations such as Ikebana (flower arranging), Bunka Shishu(embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e (brush painting).The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign upfor our Spring programmes.The JCCC’s martial artists will demonstrate the techniquesof “The Way of the Warrior” through Aikido, Judo, Karate, Iaido,Naginata, and Kendo.For entertainment, there will be odori (traditional Japanesedancing) by JCCC traditional dance groups Ayame-Kai andSakura-Kai, Koto by the Toronto Chikushikai and Taiko (Japanesedrumming). Japanese cuisine will also be available in the foodcourt.As always the JCCC and Kobayashi Hall will be colourfully andelaborately decorated to welcome the spring and the long-awaitedclose of the winter season. Festival guests entering the Centre willbe greeted by an elaborate display of Hina Matsuri Dolls.Gather your family and friends and come to the JCCC, and join usas we celebrate the arrival of Spring!Saga no Gabai Baa-chanA Heart-warming Tale ofa “Super” GrannyGabai Granny is based on the bestseller Saga No GabaiBaachan (Gabai Granny from Saga), which is penned bycomedian Shimada Yoshichi as he recounts his childhoodmemories of growing up under the care of his grandmother.Starring the evergreen Yoshiyuki Kazuko in the title role, it tellsthe story of a young boy Akihiro, who was sent against hiswishes and to his surprise, to the countryside to brought upby his grandmother. All the while his mother (played by KudohYouki) struggles as a bar-hostess.To a young boy, journeying to a faraway place, and livingin conditions alien to him, definitely makes him miss home.Worse, he is not familiar with his grandmother and her waystoo. The merits of the story, and the lessons learnt fromGranny, are both touching and subtle. Yoshiyuki's earnest andheartwarming portrayal of a Granny who truly cares, and lovesunconditionally, is the heart of the film. There is much to belearnt from her philosophy on thrift, though when it comes tospending, she goes for nothing but the best. But possibly thebest lesson that can be learnt from her, is to always look at thepositive side of adversity, to never be beaten down. She impartsexcellent values, positive thinking and reasoning peppered withcomedy, you can't help but feel endeared to her.Love, friendship, good advice, and plenty of everything elsemakes Gabai Granny a delight to watch. Kobayashi Hall was the place to be forNew Year’s celebrations at the JCCC.December 31 in the Kobayashi Hall, was the place to be to ring inthe New Year Eve with dinner and dancing. Nearly 170 revelerscrowed the room, dressed in beautiful gowns, cocktail dresses,suits and tuxedos. Once again the Kobayashi hall was transformedinto a moonlit winter night with twinkling lights and “frosty” trees.The evening started with a delicious buffet by Calvert’s Cateringthat featured prime rib roast. Once dinner ended, our favouritedisc jockey, Ralph Yuan had the crowd on their feet. The elegantdancers floated around the room amid the sparkling reflectionsoff the mirrored ball. Midnight brought the arrival of 2009 to thesounds Auld Lang Syne and the sights of multi-coloured balloonscascading down from the ceiling.The next afternoon Kobayashi Hall was again the place to befor the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Banquet. The more than250 attendees celebrated the start of a new year with an incredibleevening of fine dining and entertainment. Chef Kunio Ishii ofToriichi Catering outdid himself again in preparing the star of theshow. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechi ryori(new year’s dishes) including nishime, zoni, sashimi, sushi and somuch more. Emcee Sid Ikeda got the crowd singing to a few tunesaccompanied by his harmonica. The night also featured a specialperformance by the Richard Whiteman Trio.The JCCC thanks the organizing committees for all their greatwork in making each year’s celebrations better. A huge crowd.Nobuo Kubota Exhibit“New Calligraphy – Works on Paper”Nobuo Kubota is an artist/musician/vocalist livingin Toronto. While performing with the artistsimprovisational band CCMC in the 1980s, Kubotaencountered the sound poetry group. The FourHorsemen. He was inspired to explore his ownvoice as an art form and since then, his singingstyle has become a hybrid form with influencesfrom jazz, scat singing and Buddhist chanting.In 2004, he began to develop a calligraphicand notational system of writing sonic/sound scores.This show is the result of that investigation.The exhibit will be on display in the JCCC Heritage Gallery untilSunday March 22, 2009.Gallery hours: 10am - 5pm Mon- Fri, 10am - 4pm Sat & Sun5

February 2009JCCC Room Named in Honour ofNisei Sumi-e Artist Kazuo HamasakiKazuo Hamasaki’s technical knowledge frees him and enableshim to experiment and so achieve a new vision of hisCanadian landscape. This is in keeping with the originalpurpose of the Sumi-e painters who rebelled against thestiff academic style of professional artists and adopted anew, more lyrical style, related to the spirit and express ofthe Nanga School.— The New Canadian, October 21, 1977Sumi-e/watercolour Master Kazuo Richard Hamasakipassed away on September 17th, 2005, in his 80th year,but his art and name will live on at the Japanese CanadianCultural Centre.Hamasaki is known to have taken an active role in the developmentand establishment of the Society of CanadianArtists and was elected President for two terms. He is alsoremembered for his love for Hawaii and karaoke.In his dedication speech, Ken Noma expressed that theCentre is honoured to have a permanent collection ofHamasaki’s paintings that will be enjoyed by all. He announcedthat some of these paintings will be exhibited atthe Woodstock Gallery (in Woodstock, Ont.) on Saturday,March 7. Heritage Committee curator Bryce Kanbara ofHamilton has met with the family to produce a catalogue,and they hope that it will travel to B.C. in the near future.On Monday December 15th, 2008, family and friends ofthe late Kazuo Hamasaki gathered at the JCCC for a dedicationceremony, which renamed the Sky Room to the KazuoHamasaki Room. The Room is located on the secondfloor, just around the corner from the newly built stairsand elevator. It now displays prints of two of his watercolourpaintings and a Hawaiian deity woodcarving presentedto Hamasaki by the Royal Hawaiian Band, and donatedby Mas and Miyo Hamasaki.A special weekend exhibition of his works was also heldback in November 2006 at the JCCC, to honour his finalwish.Kaz Hamasaki was born and educated in Prince Rupert,B.C., interned at Slocan Valley, and moved to Toronto afterthe war to reunite with his family. He pursued a career asa dental ceramist and meanwhile studied Japanese cultureand sumi-e painting. He studied the Nanga Schoolof Japanese Painting and received his diploma and artistname, ‘Shin-Sen.’ His paintings have been exhibited acrossCanada, Hawai’i and Brazil and have also been documentedin art magazines across the world.As Ken Noma of the Heritage Committee of the JCCC told,“his paintings of nature speaks of the timelessness of hopeand renewal and the innate beauty in solitude.”“Although Kaz was a bachelor, he has left us his paintings– his children. All Japanese Canadians are ‘Watari Dori’ –birds of passage. Many, like Kaz, never visited Japan, butfeel a spiritual connection to their ancestral land. With thedonation of his remaining paintings and the dedication ofthe room, we will finally honour his legacy as a Nikkei artist,”said Noma.Hamasaki’s nephew Gary Hamasaki also gave a brief speechand noted, “We are very fortunate that the Cultural Centrehas decided to further recognize the Japanese Canadianheritage that Kaz has left behind through his paintings…His name and art will live on and guests who use this roomwill be able to read about him and see his art. 二 世 墨 絵 アーティスト 故 濱 崎 氏 にちなんでカズオ・ハマサキ・ルームと 命 名濱 崎 和 夫 氏 の 画 技 、 画 法 はカナダの 風 景 画 に 新 たな 展 望 をもたらす 域 に 達 した。これはプロ 芸 術 家 の型 にはまった 伝 統 的 な 形 式 に 対 して 反 旗 を 翻 し、精 神 面 と 印 象 を 重 んじる 南 画 の 新 しくてより 叙 情 的なスタイルを 導 入 した 墨 絵 画 家 の 本 来 の 目 的 を 踏まえている。1977 年 10 月 21 日 ニューカナディアン 紙墨 絵 、 水 彩 画 家 の 濱 崎 和 夫 氏 は2005 年 9 月 17 日 に80 歳 で 他 界 されましたが、 氏 の 芸 術 と 名声 は 日 系 文 化 会 館 と 共 に 生 き 続 ける 事 でしょう。2008 年 12 月 15 日 、 会 館 の 新 しい 階 段 とエレベーター 付 近 にある 二 階 スカイ・ルームがカズオ・ハマサキ・ルームと 改 名 されました。 故 濱 崎 和夫 氏 のご 遺 族 、ご 友 人 が 改 名 式 に 臨 まれました。 部屋 には 氏 の 水 彩 画 2 点 、ご 遺 族 からご 寄 贈 頂 いたロイヤル・ハワイアン・バンドから 故 人 に 贈 呈 されたハワイの 神 様 を 模 る 木 彫 品 が 飾 られています。故 濱 崎 氏 の 最 期 の 望 みを 適 える 特 別 週 末 展 覧 会が、 氏 に 追 悼 の 意 を 捧 げる 為 に2006 年 11 月に 会 館 で 催 されました。故 濱 崎 氏 はBC 州 プリンス・ルパートにて 出 生 。スローカン・バリーでの 抑 留 生 活 を 経 て、 戦 後 家 族 との 再 会 にトロントに 移 住 。 歯 科 陶 材 技 工 士 として 働く 傍 ら 日 本 文 化 、 墨 絵 を 学 びました。 本 格 的 に 日 本書 画 の 南 画 を 学 び、 免 状 と 号 「 心 泉 」を 修 得 。 作 品はカナダ、ハワイ、ブラジル 各 地 で 展 示 、 世 界 中 の数 々の 雑 誌 で 取 り 上 げられました。「 氏 の 作 品 には、 静 けさの 中 に 時 代 を 越 えた 不 朽の 秘 められた 美 しさ、 希 望 、 蘇 生 が 感 じられます。」とJCCCヘリテージ 委 員 会 副 会 長 のケン 野 間 氏は 話 します。「 作 品 の 常 設 展 示 により 来 館 する 全 ての 人 が 鑑 賞できるようになりました。そして、それは 会 館 にとって 大 変 名 誉 な 事 です。」と 野 間 氏 はスピーチの 中 で述 べました。 又 、オンタリオ 州 ウッドストックのウッドストック 画 廊 で3 月 7 日 土 曜 日 に 濱 崎 氏 の 作 品 数点 が 展 示 されます。BC 州 での 将 来 の 展 示 の 為 に、作 品 目 録 制 作 にハミルトン・ヘリテージ 委 員 会 管 理人 ブライス・カンバラ 氏 とご 家 族 が 対 面 しました。「カズは 独 身 でしたが 作 品 がカズの 子 供 達 です。そして、その 子 供 達 が 後 生 の 私 達 に 託 されました。全 ての 日 系 人 は 渡 り 鳥 。 日 本 はカズの 祖 先 の 国 、 行った 事 はありませんでしたが 精 神 的 には 深 く 繋 がっていました。 寄 贈 された 作 品 とその 常 設 展 示 室 の設 置 でついに 私 達 は 日 系 アーティスト 濱 崎 の 貢 献と 精 神 に 敬 意 を 表 す 事 ができます。」と 野 間 氏 は 語りました。甥 のゲリー 濱 崎 氏 は、「 故 人 の 作 品 を 日 系 ヘリテージと 認 めた 会 館 に 感 謝 します。 作 品 が 会 館 を 訪 れた 人 達 に 観 賞 され、 故 人 の 業 績 と 芸 術 が 生 き 続 ける 事 を 嬉 しく 思 います。 日 系 ヘリテージ・リソース・センターに 故 人 に 関 する 文 献 、 資 料 を 徐 々に 取 り揃 えておきます。」と 話 しました。ゲリー 濱 崎 氏 、ケン 吉 田 氏 、JCCC 理 事 長 マーティー 小 林 氏 がカズオ・ハマサキ・ルームの 除 幕 を 執り 行 いました。命 名 に 関 する 詳 細 及 びお 問 い 合 わせは、416-579-0870ウィリアム・パトラックまでどうぞ。Translated by Sachiko Suzuki14又 、 故 人 はカナディアン・アーティスト・ソサエティーの 設 立 と 発 展 に 尽 力 を 尽 くし、 会 長 を2 期 務 めました。 氏 のハワイとカラオケ 好 きは 周 囲 の 人 の 間 では 懐 かしい 想 い 出 になっています。
