Good Job Descriptions Can Help
Produce Excellent Employees
At the March Monthly Membership Luncheon
our speaker, Julia Robinson of Stellar Solutions,
talked about how crucial it is to have the right
employees in the right positions at your business.
Something that can get you on the right track is to
have an accurate job description for each position in
your company. Defining the job correctly and hiring
the right employee are critical to your business success.
Poor job descriptions lead to confusion and
frustration by all. Bad employee choices cost companies
lost productivity. Firing an employee can
cause labor disputes and reduce company morale.
Our Tools for Business Success website
(http://bit.ly/fNrFPY), which we run along with
Skagit Valley College, has two free tools to help you
determine the job descriptions. The first,
CareerOneStop, is run by the U.S. Department of
Labor. It will help you by starting with a basic search
for the position you are trying to fill. You will then
enter some information about the position such as
hours per week, and continue on to select tasks,
Each month, the Mount Vernon
get to know some of the diverse and interesting
La Conner Thousand Trails
In the Pacific Northwest we are surrounded
with natural beauty. One particular
business that recognizes this and
wants to share it with their customers is
La Conner Thousand Trails. They are all
about providing the space to experience
the beauty of the Puget Sound, engage in
nature and relax with family and friends.
La Conner Thousand Trails is located
near Hope Island on the Swinomish
Indian Reservation in La Conner. This
32 year old full service gated RV and
camping resort boasts 111 acres, ½ mile
of saltwater beach, clean facilities and
too many other amenities to fit within
the confines of this small 8 page newsletter.
A few of them include a basketball
court, mini-golf and spa.
Something that makes Thousand
Trails camping unique from the usual
camping experience is the fact that they are
a full service resort, they hold events and
UnMarketing: Stop Marketing.
Start Engaging
by Scott Stratten
From one of the leading experts in
viral and social marketing-market your
business effectively to today's customers
For generations, marketing has been
hypocritical. We've been taught to market
to others in ways we hate being marketed
to (cold-calling, flyers, ads, etc.).
So why do we still keep trying the same
stale marketing moves?
UnMarketing shows you how to
unlearn the old ways and consistently
attract and engage the right customers.
You'll stop just pushing out your message
and praying that it sticks somewhere.
Potential and current customers
want to be listened to, validated, and
have a platform to be heard-especially
online. With UnMarketing, you'll create
such a relationship with your customers,
and make yourself the logical choice for
their needs.
Shows how to create a mindset and
systems to roll out a new, 21st century
marketing approach
campfires with music. Needless to say, you
get more than your average s’more. Now
anybody can enjoy the resort too, since
they have recently opened up to the public.
For those that would like to join they are
offering a special where you can become a
member with no enrollment fee and visit
any of their 18 NW region parks.
Manager Nancy Geddes has been
with Thousand Trails for 20 years now,
coming to Washington from California
about 7 years ago. She and her husband
are photographers and love the natural
beauty of the area and especially appreciate
the tulips and daffodils grown by
Washington Bulb/RoozenGaarde during
the Tulip Festival. If you would like to
find out more about Thousand Trails,
visit 1000trails.com or stop by the resort
at 16362 Snee Oosh Road in La Conner.
Marketing expert Scott Stratten
focuses on a Pull & Stay method
(pulling your market towards you
and staying/engaging with them,
leading them to naturally choose
you for their needs) rather than
Push & Pray
Redefines marketing as all points of
engagement between a company
and its customers, not just a single
boxed-in activity
Traditional marketing methods are
leading to diminishing returns and disaffected
customers. The answer? Stop
marketing, start UnMarketing!
responsibilities and capabilities typical
to the position you are hiring for. Once
you are finished putting in your information...presto,
you have a good working
job description for your specific
position at your company.
The second tool listed on the site is
a little more comprehensive than the
first. It is built in part by the American
Express OPEN Small Business Network.
First it helps you develop an accurate job
description similar to what the first tool
does. It then continues on to lead you
through a series of work-related and
personal character traits to help you
determine what you want in an employee.
It will then generate a customized
worksheet that you can use to evaluate
various candidates for the opening, and
Tiptoe through the tulips at Tulip
Town’s Locals Night
With such a great event like Local’s
Night why wouldn’t the Mount Vernon
Chamber hold their Business Happy
Hour there? If you’ve never been to this
event at Tulip Town, this is your opportunity.
Tulip Town owners Anthony
and Jeannette DeGoede open their
gates to local residents with no charge
on Wednesday, April 20th. Plus, when
you get through those gates your fellow
Anthony DeGoede Family
finally provide you with sample interview
questions that can assist in determining
whether a candidate meets the
above job description.
Finding the right employee can be
very time consuming for a small business
owner between writing the job
description, getting the opening posted
on job sites, filtering resumes, and conducting
interviews. If your head is spinning
thinking about this consider using a
recruiter to help you find the right candidate.
You can find chamber member
recruiters under the Employment
Services category in the Chamber
Directory blue pages or online at
www.mountvernonchamber.com/direct
ory. The hiring process can be stressful,
but find the right employee and they
could help catapult your business to the
next level.
Chamber Members will be there to
greet you. Snap some photos with the
flowers or take your family on a tractor
ride. When you’re done tiptoeing
through the tulips, come inside and do
some springtime networking with the
Chamber crowd. The fun starts at
5:30pm and goes until 7:30pm. Tulip
Town is located at 15002 Bradshaw Rd.
in Mount Vernon.
