ISD students livingin <strong>the</strong> dorms will per<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> popularmusical Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in <strong>the</strong> ISDLied Multipurpose Complex. The presentation willfollow <strong>the</strong> main story line with modified scenes.The story is about two teenagers, Sandy Olsen andDanny Zuko, in <strong>the</strong> 1950s who have a summerromance. The two are surprised when <strong>the</strong>yend up at <strong>the</strong> same high school in <strong>the</strong> fall, andare torn between keeping <strong>the</strong>ir personalitiesas <strong>the</strong>ir friends expect, or returning to <strong>the</strong>personalities <strong>the</strong>y fell in love with during <strong>the</strong>summer.ISD students first per<strong>for</strong>med songs from <strong>the</strong> work in <strong>the</strong> late ‘90s,when <strong>the</strong> school had all-school plays. This spring will be <strong>the</strong> firstall-school play (which is more accurately, “all-dormitory play”) since2003.The all-school play scripts are edited by Nyle Smith, boys dean.Intense practice occurs between <strong>the</strong> Great Plains <strong>School</strong>s <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong>basketball tournament and <strong>the</strong> start of track meets.Per<strong>for</strong>mance is Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in <strong>the</strong>ISD Lied Multipurpose Complex.Connect with us onFacebook <strong>for</strong> details closer to <strong>the</strong> event.On <strong>the</strong> CoverPut into place in <strong>the</strong> 1970s, <strong>the</strong> playground located between<strong>the</strong> elementary and high school is being considered <strong>for</strong> anoverhaul. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •ISD’s 13th superintendent to lead school in FloridaPrickett leaving ISDin November, <strong>the</strong> Florida<strong>School</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> and <strong>the</strong>Blind (FSDB) announcedJeanne Prickett, Ed.D.,would become that school’s17th president at <strong>the</strong> conclusion of<strong>the</strong> current school year.Dr. Prickett, who has been<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong>’ssuperintendent since <strong>the</strong> summerof 2003, brings nearly 40 yearsof experience in both deaf/hardof hearing and blind/visuallyimpaired education to Florida.“I wish I could take youall with me,” Dr. Prickettsaid at a student assemblyto announce her newappointment.She will be FSDB’s first femalepresident, as she was <strong>Iowa</strong><strong>School</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong>’s first femalesuperintendent.FSDB has an enrollment of nearly600 students. Approximately400 are deaf or hard of hearing;and 200 are blind or have lowvision. Its board is appointedby <strong>the</strong> governor. Sharedservices at <strong>the</strong> school includeadministration, facilities, foodservices, transportation, healthservices and housekeeping. Workwill be judged <strong>for</strong> uniqueness/originality, professional quality,aes<strong>the</strong>tic quality, concept, selectionand application of materials,and complexity/level of digitaltechnology used.The students are competing in <strong>the</strong>photo illustration category and senttwo of <strong>the</strong>ir favorite images withaccompanying essays describinghow <strong>the</strong>y created each photo.Students used Adobe Photoshopto edit and enhance <strong>the</strong>ir picturesand <strong>the</strong>n saved and burned <strong>the</strong>monto a disc <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> competition.Chadwick led her studentsfrom <strong>the</strong> basics (“Most of <strong>the</strong>irexperience was ‘turn on <strong>the</strong>camera and push <strong>the</strong> shutterrelease,’” she said) to cameraanatomy, and fundamentalcamera functions.Eventually, <strong>the</strong>y advancedto demonstrating conceptsof framing, depth of field andcomposition. “They have to knowand understand <strong>the</strong> rules be<strong>for</strong>e<strong>the</strong>y can break <strong>the</strong>m,” she said.“Photography is <strong>the</strong> perfect placeto break rules and get amazingresults!”4The <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Hawkeye</strong> • Fall, 2010The <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Hawkeye</strong> Issue 1, 2010/2011“They have to knowand understand <strong>the</strong>rules be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>y canbreak <strong>the</strong>m.”Chadwick admits <strong>the</strong> classesdidn’t become com<strong>for</strong>table with all<strong>the</strong> concepts quickly, but <strong>the</strong> timespent was worthwhile. “Studentswho may not have seemedparticularly creative or artistic at<strong>the</strong> beginning of class producedphotos that awed me.”“There is no greater momentas a teacher than watching astudent take a basic concept that Iintroduce and watch <strong>the</strong>m make it<strong>the</strong>ir own.”

Rainfallmeasuring up to 4 inches fellbetween midnight and 6 a.m.on August 22, four days after<strong>the</strong> hailstorm.The temporary patches couldn’thold up, and despite ef<strong>for</strong>tsby staff to soak up <strong>the</strong> water,too much streamed down <strong>the</strong>walls of <strong>the</strong> LMC and ruined<strong>the</strong> wood floor. After a completeassessment of <strong>the</strong> campus with<strong>the</strong> two storms, Nielsen, MayneArchitecture, Inc. estimatedmore than $1 million in campusdamage.Volleyball practices weremoved to <strong>the</strong> old gym, whichOne mascot was destroyed with <strong>the</strong> heavy rainfall pouring onto<strong>the</strong> gym floor. The surviving bobcat is still assembled, waiting<strong>for</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r home at ISD. The pair of ‘Cats was airbrushed on<strong>the</strong> gym floor <strong>the</strong> spring of 2002, when <strong>the</strong> Lied MultipurposeComplex opened. Big-10 college footballcolors, that is. The annualgame between <strong>the</strong> Universityof <strong>Iowa</strong> and <strong>the</strong> University ofNebraska was a perfect timeto let those colors show on <strong>the</strong>ISD campus.The teams first battled eacho<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> early 1890s,<strong>Hawkeye</strong> fans Amanda Barrier andKaleigh Wilt share friendly rivalrywith Maracs Ibarra and AustinGaines.Divided fans united <strong>for</strong> a tailgate party celebrating <strong>the</strong> Big 10 football gamebetween University of <strong>Iowa</strong> and University of Nebraska. UNL won <strong>the</strong> Nov. 25game played at Lincoln, 20 - 7.<strong>for</strong>ming a long-lived rivalry.Recognizing a fierce differencein fan loyalty, ISD faculty andstudents hosted a tailgate partyon <strong>the</strong> homegoing morningbe<strong>for</strong>e Thanksgiving. Wilson and herfour classmates board a bus and goto a Hy-Vee twice a week to “face”shelves and clean <strong>the</strong> freezer anddairy glass doors.“We work on skills <strong>the</strong>y will needin a supported work setting, likesocial skills and staying on task,”said Bradley. She said <strong>the</strong> groupis <strong>for</strong>tunate to have Hy-Vee asa receptive work site. “It’s a realstruggle to find places <strong>for</strong> volunteerwork,” she said.Hy-Vee is a change after goingto <strong>the</strong> Veteran’s Hospital (VA)in Omaha, where <strong>for</strong> six years,<strong>the</strong> class had folded laundry,vacuumed, cleaned and sanitizeddishes in <strong>the</strong> cafeteria.ISD sophomore Brian Johnsonsaid although he liked being in <strong>the</strong>VA’s dishroom, he is starting toenjoy Hy-Vee.Their work is strictly volunteerand <strong>the</strong>ir identification badgesreflect this. However, customersoccasionally ask <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir help.Johnson brought milk to a customerwith a mobility challenge recently.“It felt good to help,” he said.Ano<strong>the</strong>r student decided earlyon <strong>the</strong>re was more to his Hy-Veeexperience than “facing” andcleaning. Bradley said he createdhis own job, by putting back foodthat customers do not want. Shesaid,“If <strong>the</strong>re are no putbacks<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> day, he walks <strong>the</strong> aisleslooking <strong>for</strong> and finding <strong>the</strong>m.”Can-do team: Ali Janendofinds her long reach anasset when facing shelves at<strong>the</strong> Hy-Vee on Broadway inCouncil Bluffs. Janendo andher classmates practice workskills at <strong>the</strong> store.Bradley sees her students gainingindependence and improving<strong>the</strong>ir self-starter habits. Shesaid one student applies <strong>the</strong>work experience at home in DesMoines. Hummer (1849 - 1939) was honoredwith <strong>the</strong> Distinguished Services to <strong>the</strong>Community/Distinguished Leadership award.He attended ISD at <strong>Iowa</strong>City in 1858. Not only did ISD students participate, but <strong>the</strong> 5th/6th grade volleyballteam (The Funky Monkeys) had three area mainstreamed students.
