Big-10 college footballcolors, that is. The annualgame between the Universityof Iowa and the University ofNebraska was a perfect timeto let those colors show on theISD campus.The teams first battled eachother in the early 1890s,Hawkeye fans Amanda Barrier andKaleigh Wilt share friendly rivalrywith Maracs Ibarra and AustinGaines.Divided fans united for a tailgate party celebrating the Big 10 football gamebetween University of Iowa and University of Nebraska. UNL won the Nov. 25game played at Lincoln, 20 - 7.forming a long-lived rivalry.Recognizing a fierce differencein fan loyalty, ISD faculty andstudents hosted a tailgate partyon the homegoing morningbefore Thanksgiving. Physicaleducation teachers and Huskerfans Karen Lechner and VickiPrigeon organized the event.Students and staff donned redor yellow clothing, face paint,beads and other fan wear toshow their loyalties to eitherthe Cornhuskers or Hawkeyes.About a dozen ISD studentsare residents of Nebraska andmost of them do support theHuskers, said their teachers.The same is not true for ISD’sIowa residents, however, who7 The Iowa The Iowa Hawkeye Hawkeye Issue • Fall, 1, 2011/2012 20106are divided almost evenly insupport of Hawkeyes or Huskers.“It was about the studentslearning to appreciate thedifferences amongst themselves,”said Lechner. “Also, we careabout what makes the studentspassionate, who they cheer for,”she said.Tailgate finger food, healthysnacks, football-themed indoorgames and activities were offeredschool-wide in the cafeteria. Apopular activity was posing forgroup photos with fans from bothsides.Red and yellow never lookedbetter.7
