2012 Membership Information Enclosed

A message from the president ...
Dear Colleagues,
As I have stated previously, my goal as the new president of the
Michigan Osteopathic Association is simple: to inform and guide
legislators through an increase in membership activity. Being a
member of the MOA has not only linked me to people who hold
the same values and ideals that I do, but it has supported me as a
physician as a whole.
Being doctors, we are constantly bombarded from all sides
with challenges, from the government, to insurance, to medical
regulators. Medicine has become more of a business than a personal
practice. The people who are making the decisions that affect us as
doctors have little medical experience outside their being a patient.
It is important that we do our part to educate these people, and in
doing that, we ourselves need to be educated as well.
It is with this that I urge you to become a member of the Michigan
Osteopathic Association. The MOA is fighting for you every day
to ensure that you can focus on what is most important – caring
for your patients. In fact, MOA is the only organization exclusively
committed to educating and advocating for all of Michigan’s
osteopathic physicians.
Thank you for your commitment to the profession of your patients. I
look forward to working with you in the coming year as we prepare
for the future of health care. Let’s make this the year they understand
we take the business of health seriously and that our success
requires the commitment and participation of all.
If you have any questions, input or would like more information
about MOA, please contact me, any member of the MOA Board of
Trustees or MOA staff using the contact information provided on the
last page of this brochure, or visit the MOA website at
Sincerely,
Kurt C. Anderson, D.O.
Benefits of Membership
Continuing Medical Education
For more than 100 years, MOA has hosted the state’s largest
annual convention for AOA Category 1-A CME credits, offering a
wide variety of courses on topics from cardiology and neurology
to dermatology and preventive medicine.
More recently, we have further expanded our CME offerings to
western and northern Michigan, offering more than 60 hours of
AOA Category 1-A CME each year to better serve the needs of
Michigan’s osteopathic physicians.
MOA Publications
Through our flagship publication, TRIAD, monthly e-newsletter
UPDATE Online, the MOA website and other publications, we
keep you informed about current events in health care delivery
and the osteopathic profession as well as the latest legislative
news and alerts, and other information you need to help you do
what you do best — care for your patients. And don’t forget to
“like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!
MOA makes it easy for you to access tools and resources for your
your practice, obtaining a national provider identifier or inquiring
about standardized clinical practice guidelines that encourage
better health outcomes for your patients, MOA is your resource at
www.mi-osteopathic.org or (800) 657-1556.
Advocacy for Osteopathic Medicine
MOA is your voice at the Michigan Capitol.
The MOA lobbies the Legislature and administrative agencies
in Lansing on political issues that affect how you deliver health
care. While you care for your patients, MOA fights for adequate
reimbursement for your health care services, medical liability
reform, protection of scope of practice, advancement of primary
care and more.
To help create a health care system that best meets the needs
of our state, MOA is working diligently to ensure an osteopathic
presence in developing Michigan’s health care policy.
MOPAC
What is a PAC? It is a political action committee that is registered
with the Michigan Secretary of State and raises funds for political
campaigns that will help promote its interests.
The Michigan Osteopathic Political Action Committee (MOPAC)
augments MOA’s legislative activities by raising money to support
candidates for state office who are responsive to the concerns of
osteopathic physicians – in turn enabling the profession to lobby
for a wide variety of health care issues such as adequate physician
reimbursement and smoke-free workplaces. See the back of this
page for details on how you can get involved.
Shane Sergent, MOA Student Trustee
Why do I give to MOPAC?
We are at the dawn of a new era of health care in the United States. While more Americans than ever will have
access to affordable health care, insurance companies and government regulators have an increasing role in
determining health care delivery. Ironically, issues such as the looming catastrophic shortage of doctors, loan
repayment for students, SGR repeal, and reform of the medical liability system are not decided by those who are
largely affected by such changes, but rather those in Congress.
During this transitional period of health care reform, you have a choice to let your voice be heard. Whether
by contacting your legislators, educating the public on osteopathic medicine or your active involvement in
advocacy organizations like the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) and the Michigan Osteopathic Political
Committee (MOPAC), you can be part of change for the profession. Every little bit counts and every single person
has a role to play.
MOPAC is on the forefront of this advocacy battle, fighting for you and your patients. They work towards electing legislators who believe
in preserving the patient-physician relationship and protecting our scope of practice. Today’s laws affect the physicians of tomorrow.
By supporting MOPAC, we as physicians and students stand united and influence the future of our profession. I challenge everyone to
go beyond thinking about getting involved and just do it. I give to MOPAC because I believe in having a collective voice for physicians,
patients, and medical students. ~ Shane Sergent is a student at MSUCOM.
