MainStreet Events Help Make Summer Fun
After surviving the blizzard of 2011, it’s time to enjoy the warm months ahead.
If you’re a foodie, dog lover, car buff, or live music fan, we have an event for
you. Don’t forget: the west side parking lot (behind the Village Hall) will be under
construction…but never fear. We have parking hints and tips for you on page 3.

FARMERS MARKET

THURSDAYS, JUNE 23 – OCT. 20
7 AM – 1 PM • CHURCH STREET
Rain or shine, 30 vendors will
offer the “freshest of the fresh”
in a traditional market setting where you buy
food items directly from the person who grew,
baked, or made them. This year’s market will
feature flower bouquets, assembled while you
wait, warm kettle corn, free-range beef, pork,
chicken, and eggs, fresh English toffee and
granola, organic vegetables, crepes made
just for you, exotic sauces, pasta, cheeses,
homemade dog treats and accessories,
pickles, relishes, locally-harvested honey,
olives, humus, maybe the best pita bread
anywhere, fresh squeezed lemonade, sweet
corn (in season), shrubs and perennials. You
also can buy scones, baguettes, pastries,
pies, tasty tarts, and a wide assortment of
vegetables and fruits from farmers you have
known for years. Cook Memorial Library will
host their popular weekly outdoor story time
in Cook Park while Mom shops. New this
year will be a weekly listing of downtown
businesses offering weekly specials for early
morning shoppers. Join Mayor Weppler for
the annual watermelon cutting on Thursday,
June 23 at 9 am.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
JULY 8-10 • DOWNTOWN LIBERTYVILLE
Libertyville is going to the dogs! The
DockDogs-Big Air Dog Jumping national
competition is coming back to our downtown.
If you missed last year’s event, be sure to
come for the speed and splashes as the dogs
run down a 40-foot dock and jump into a
20x40-foot pool containing 27,000 gallons of
water. Downtown shops/restaurants will be
hosting dog friendly events. Center stage in
Cook Park will feature events such as a
Doggie Fashion Show and Pet Parade.
TWILIGHT SHUFFLE 5K RUN
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 • 6PM
Join your friends, family members, and
neighbors in one of the largest and most
popular 3-mile runs in the North Shore.
Runners follow a path through the historic
east side of downtown Libertyville while
crowds of enthusiastic neighbors cheer them
on to the finish line. Following the race, participants
enjoy dinner and rehydration at Mickey
Finn’s Brewery. (Non-participants are welcome,
too.) For more information or to register,
visit www.twilightshuffle.com. Race morning
registration will be held from 9am-12pm on
race day. No walkup registration at race.

This past January I had the opportunity and pleasure to lead a threehour
planning session with a very hardworking group of MainStreet
Board member volunteers. The purpose of the planning session was to
review the past year’s accomplishments and challenges, and designate
goals for the coming year. Here’s the result:
2010 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• New website – Our old site was an antique.
Check out the new one: www.mainstreetlibertyville.org.
• New Executive Director – Pam Hume has done an outstanding job working with
businesses, residents and volunteers, both within and outside of the MainStreet district.
• New office space – Visit our new office across Cook Street from our old one, at
160 E. Cook. Oh, and check out what Amazing Cosmetics is doing to our old location.
ou won’t recognize it!
• Diversified Income Sources – We have expanded our corporate and business reach and
improved our fundraising efforts.
• Increased Associate Members – We’ve gone from 45 to 68, significantly expanding
our reach beyond the downtown district. We all need to work together during these
challenging times!
• Merchant Involvement/Education – We’ve provided monthly education programs to
merchants to give them additional tools and business skills.
• Visibility/Public Relations – We’ve increased press coverage of MainStreet events and efforts.
• Facebook Page – Check it out. Like us!
We feel that’s a lot for one year. How do we top it? Here’s what’s up for 2011:
2011 GOALS
• Volunteer Base Expansion – If you like what we are doing as a volunteer-driven organization,
we could really use your help! Please call the MainStreet office if you can help even a little.
• Committee Participation – We have four standing committees that meet monthly.
If you would like to be a part of one, let us know.
• Fiscal Yearend Change – We’ve changed from a 4/30 year-end to a 12/31 year-end since
we operate our event schedule on a calendar year basis.
• Social Media – This is rapidly becoming the means of immediate communication and
community-building. It’s critical that we utilize these tools!
• Corporate Sponsorship Expansion – Advocate Condell became our first corporate partner
and has given us a program to build upon. Our corporate event sponsors continue to grow.
• Marketing and Public Relations – We will have a dedicated, budgeted program for the first
time ever as we continue to promote our efforts and downtown Libertyville as THE local
destination!
• Charitable Giving and Endowment Program – The family of Dom Lentini, a former
downtown merchant who passed away last year, remembered MainStreet in the most
touching manner. Dom will be honored at our Annual Meeting in May.

Tour
Scheduled for June 4
MainStreet Libertyville is hosting its 8th annual self-guided Historic Home Tour on
Saturday, June 4, from 10am to 2pm. The focus of this year’s tour is bungalows, a type
of house that has varying meanings around the country. Our tour will feature several
different styles of bungalows.
Many houses in Libertyville feature different bungalow styles, including some of the
Chicago bungalow style. Unlike the homes featured in the 2010 tour, bungalows do
not have large porches. But we may still be able to feature a few porches this year.
In addition, several gardens and interiors will be open for viewing.
Tour participants can enjoy walking, biking, or driving through town to see these
distinguished homes. MainStreet Libertyville Volunteers will be in Cook Park distributing
the Historic Home Tour booklets describing the history or the style of the houses and
directions to the various properties. These tour booklets are offered for a donation of
$10.00 to MainStreet Libertyville.
The event sponsors are The Tranel Financial Group, Great Lakes Credit Union,
Advocate Condell, and Libertyville Bank & Trust. All are businesses in Libertyville.
Summer Parking
Information & Tips
The west side parking lot from the Picnic
Basket north to the parking garage will be
“under construction” after Libertyville Days.
The lot will be given a makeover to create
more walkway accessibility to shops, additional
landscaping, and more parking spaces. This may cause some inconvenience this summer,
but please don’t forego attending Farmers Market and Out to Lunch! We’ve scoured the area
and have some alternative event parking suggestions during the construction project.
• Use the FREE covered parking garage on Lake Street.
• Use the lot behind St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.
• Use the PNC Bank (325 N. Milwaukee) north lot only
with designated spaces (event parking only).
• Use the parking lot in front of the MainStreet office
(160 E. Cook) (event parking only).
• Use the parking lot behind the east side businesses.
Please watch for event parking signage which will
designate parking areas and respect the private
parking areas of the businesses.

Shuffle attracted a record number of runners and sponsors and an equally spectacular
crowd of cheerful spectators.
The Twilight Shuffle 5K Run serves as MainStreet Libertyville’s biggest fundraiser.
Professional chip-timing continues this year, along with plentiful individual awards, popular
family awards (Fit Family and Fast Family), t-shirts and goody bags for all, and yet another
wonderful post-race dinner at Mickey Finn’s Brewery, free to all participants.
Online registration opened months ago, so don’t dilly-dally or you’ll miss our
discounted early registration rates. Due to our ever-growing number of participants and our
desire to maintain a high level of safety and accuracy at this event, there will be no walk-up
registration this year. The last opportunity to register will be on the morning of the race, from
9am-12pm at The Runner’s Edge in downtown Libertyville.
