Bouncers, for achieving their GymMark

It’s official - London gymnasts have talent…!
Britain’s Got Talent viewers will have seen Allstarz Gymnastics Club on the ITV1 show in April. Their beautifully
choreographed routine amazed the judges, and won them three “Yes” votes from Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden
and Piers Morgan.
Those of you that attended the opening ceremony of the Men’s British Championships in
November saw our friends from Diversity performing their amazing “Transformers” streetdance routine. The
group, that includes a gymnast from Catleaps also entered the competition and wowed the judges with their
dancing skills and exciting choreography, also winning three “Yes” votes, taking them through to the next round.
Young Leaders Camp
Gymnastics England is working in partnership with England Netball, Rugby Football Union &
United Kingdom Athletics to offer two hundred 16-19yr olds the opportunity to attend a four
day residential Young Leaders Camp. The camp is taking place at Rugby School, Warwickshire
from Monday 10th August - Thursday 13th August 2009 and will focus upon the
development of leadership skills through sport, offering a good blend of practical and theory-based sessions.
The event will be run by staff from the four sports and the programme offers a range of workshops including
coaching and officiating, media, sports psychology, leadership & management and much more! There will also be
time built in for relaxation and evening social activities, co-ordinated by trained staff.
Gymnastics England is offering 50 of the most dedicated young volunteers the opportunity to attend the Camp
completely FREE of charge (including all accommodation, workshops and meals). Leaders are required to transport
themselves to the camp, however there may be the opportunity to share transport with others.
To be eligible, the leaders will need to meet the following criteria:
16-19yrs old at the time of the camp
Actively volunteering in gymnastics within a club / school / college. Please note that priority will be given to applications
from clubs that have achieved, or are working towards GymMark
Have obtained a Leadership Award or Level 1 or equivalent Coaching / Judging Award
Enthusiastic, motivated and committed to developing their skills and experience
The London Open
The London Open took place at Goresbrook in March, with a record number of entries: 150 in the Men’s
Open and nearly 250 in the Development Open. As ever, the standard was extremely high, but our
London gymnasts performed outstandingly.
On the Friday morning, Catleaps held taster sessions for local school children, followed by the Under 14 competition on Friday
afternoon, with podium training on Friday evening.
Heathrow’s Thomas Gibbs competed in the U16 category for the first time, and his efforts were rewarded with 5th place
overall, and 2nd place on floor. Congratulations to Joseph Honey of Croydon, Kyle Kotahir of Harrow, Uylesses Arch of
Camden and Scott Creasey of Croydon for winning 1st place in their categories.
The qualifying teams from Robert Clack, Grafton Junior, St Mary’s and City of
London travelled to Stoke to represent the London region at the British Schools
National Carita House Finals in March. Robert Clack performed outstandingly to
take the U16 Boys title - just twelve months after their hopes were dashed when
one of the boys broke his arm during the group routine. Organiser Linda McNally
said “The most emotional moment was seeing the strength, grace, skill and control
of Robert Clack. They stayed focused, healthy & were clear winners.”
LGF AGM - Sunday 6th September
This year the AGM will be held at The Marriott Hotel in Bexleyheath.
What do you want to know about the AGM????
1 Broadway
Bexleyheath,
DA6 7JZ
Timetable and details of
speakers will be available
in the next newsletter.
Who can attend?
Anybody who has involvement with a London Gymnastics Federation club – gymnast, club official, parent, coach,
judge, etc. etc.
Who can vote?
At the individual Technical Assemblies, covering each of the disciplines, each registered club in that discipline has a
vote, and so does each judge or coach who holds a licence showing that discipline.
At the A.G.M. : each club present has one vote, plus the Chairs of each of the TC.’s have one vote.
Does it cost anything to attend?
NO!!! – on the contrary, refreshments are supplied free of charge, and a buffet lunch is also laid on, totally free.
We want to encourage people to attend.
Do I have to attend all day?
No, you can come when you like and leave when you like. The full time-table will be sent to clubs in plenty of
time for you to know when each Technical Assembly is being held. The AGM proper always takes place about
mid-afternoon, and we like to be finished by 5.30 /6.00 pm.
Why should I attend…..?
Because the decisions made that day effects all clubs and their members throughout the year, whether squads or
recreational. The price of democracy is enternal vigilance.
AWARD NOMINATIONS INSTRUCTIONS
Organising the awards has been very challenging over the last few years with nominations being sent to Sarah Sylvester and
myself in many different formats. In accordance with the Awards Criteria printed in the Year Book 2009 and on the website the
following rules will apply and be kept to.
• All the new Young Volunteer nominations go directly to Sarah Sylvester on the new forms
• All Awards of Merit come directly to go directly to Sarah Sylvester on the new forms
• Bronze Silver and Gold Awards can only be sent to Sarah Sylvester by the TC’s, the JTC or the Management
Committee. Forms are being supplied to the TC’s for this. If individuals send them to Sarah Sylvester directly she will
send them back and tell them to send them to one of the authorising committees.
• Master Gymnast Awards MUST be on the new forms and sent by the Technical Committee to Sarah Sylvester. If
individuals or clubs send them to Sarah Sylvester directly she will send them back and tell them to send them to the
appropriate authorising committee.
• Judges Awards MUST be on the new forms and sent by the Technical Committee to Sarah Sylvester. If individuals
or clubs send them to Sarah Sylvester directly she will send them back and tell them to send them to the authorising
committee
• Special Awards, Life Vice Presidents and the Edna Gross Award will be notified to me by the TC’s, JCT or the
Management Committee.
As stated any awards sent to Sarah Sylvester incorrectly will be returned and if sent to me they will also be returned.
The closing date for the submission of award nominations is 19 June 2009. This means that letters can be sent out before the
end of the school term and gives parents, gymnasts and clubs time to organise tables at the Awards Dinner. Closing date for
booking tickets is Tuesday 1 September 2009
The forms for the Young Volunteer Award & Award of Merit will be sent out with the next newsletter & also on the website.
This year submissions after the due date will not be processed but returned to the sender.
HILLINGDON SCHOOL OF GYMNASTICS – CLOSED
What a sad day for London , indeed for British Gymnastics.
One of our foremost clubs forced into total closure by their
local Authority. The same authority that presented them
with two special sporting awards two days before sending in
the receivers and forcing them out of the ‘dome’ they have
been in for so many years.
My memories of gymnastics in London are tied up with HSG.
Tania Swallow was one of the tutors on my very first WA
judging course that I attended back in 1984. Mike Swallow
was the Competition Organiser for WA and also for many of
MA competitions in the region.
HSG moved into their dome in Victoria Road, South Ruislip,
following an extensive period of being nomads when the
sports centre they had used for training was closed. Their
dome was a wonder to behold. Heathrow GC had been the
first club in London to turn an enlarged tent into a dedicated,
pitted gym. But Hillingdon SG was the first-ever to have such
a dome which was 2-tier, and I can well remember the
excitement when it was first opened, even though the internal
layout was only in phase 1 then (no podium, no upstairs.).
Over the years, HSG & LGF were flip sides of the coin. With
Mike Swallow as our regional Chairman, all meetings of the
Executive Council were hosted at HSG and for some time
they were also the main competition arena in London, with
the London Open (MA) & many of the Regional WA
competitions being held there. Mike & Tania were always
generous with their facility.
Carolle Kay from Zodiac GC
16
When the highly Elite Westminster Rhythmic GC was forced
out of their sports hall, they were taken in by HSG, and from
there continued producing national and international rhythmic
gymnasts. All sorts of coach and judge courses and meetings
were held in that dome. It had a feeling of permanency
that such a facility, being build in what was, essentially, a tent,
should not have had.
Their battle for the past two years with some members of the
local council, always had what they themselves describe as a
David & Goliath situation, but this time, the odds overwhelmed
David. Hundreds of young gymnasts in that borough
have now been forced to stop their gymnastic classes – and
nobody really understands the reason why.
At present the desperate search is on for a short-term facility
for them just to be able to continue offering something to the
local youngsters, & for a long-term solution to provide them
with a full-time facility to continue the proud record of
‘Swallows’, which covers everything from pre-school, through
community and on to High Performance gymnastics.
Hopefully, the Phoenix will arise from these flames and this
club will eventually be able just to look back on these as the
worst of all possible times. However, we know that they are
not the only club in desperate circumstances – and if it can
happen to something as powerful as Hillingdon SG, then no
club and nobody is really safe. JT
As of September 2008 I retired from Zodiac G.C. and this has now passed to my daughter, Rachel Kay who is now Head
Coach. I would like to take opportunity to say that I coached since I was 14 and really enjoyed the sport and have seen many
kids achieve great things, not always directly to do with gymnastics, but with the aid of the sport – this has given me great
satisfaction.
I would like to thank Bill and Jenny Cosgrove who set on me on the road to coaching a young age. To Keith Richardson in
not believing in me – and therefore giving the drive to succeed – Thank you. To the many coaches who have helped me with
many words of wisdom over the years. To the fantastic times I had on my Lilleshall courses, and to the many clubs up and
down the country that I got to see – Thank you all for the fun and support. I would like to thank June Tatch for the support
she gave me when arriving in London in 1991, Thank you for putting up with me.
My last thank you goes to a young man who took Zodiac in when we lost our premises at a short 6 weeks notice and he did
not blink an eyelid at the quantity of equipment – but at the young of 23 had the foresight to see the future gains out club
would give to his centre., So Matt Clithero, Sports Manager at Warlingham School, Surrey – Thank You!!
I can now remember the good times and forget the bad, and this will keep me smiling all the time. I wish gymnastics and everyone
who works within it all the best for the future, and I shall watch the Olympics on TV sat on the sofa and enjoying it as a
spectator

The LGF Management Committee (the overall governing body for the region), has spent considerable time this year reviewing
the whole matter of LGF licences for Gymnasts.
There is no doubt that over the past two decades these have played a very important part both in bringing much needed
finance into the TC’s as well as helping to ensure that all gymnasts were appropriately and properly registered. However
times change and we have to change with them and not get stuck in the past.
The decision was taken earlier in the year that no gymnast would require licences for London Youth Games, a decision
welcomed by Limelight and the London boroughs.
The Committee have now been notified that there could be a breach of the Child Protection law in that photographs of
children were being sent by land mail together with details of their names, addresses etc.
After a very long debate involving all the disciplines, the Management Committee at its April 2009 meeting decided on the
following –
1. With IMMEDIATE EFFECT all licence applications for people under the age of 18 years (gymnasts and offcials)
must no longer include any photograph.
2. Gymnasts licences will be required for all regional competitions (except LYG) for the remainder of 2009.
3. New applications for Gymnasts licences to be made in the usual manner, but with no photograph included
4. Existing gymnast licences can be renewed by lists through email – however it is still necessary to send payment by post
and in any case, a return stamped, addressed envelope will need to be sent to the Licence Officer in order that he can
send the renewed licence.
LGF LICENCES FOR GYMNASTS
5. As from 1 st January 2010 LGF gymnasts licences will cease to exist.
(Note: Individual TC’s may wish to continue some form of registration system, but if they do so it will be totally down to them to
organise and to cover all costs. – TC’s may consider the alternative of needing slightly to increase the cost of competition entries
to replace the licence money)
