Available technologies and casestudiesThe literature reviewed (Radcliffe 2004; AustralianWater Conservation and Reuse Research Program2004; Landcom 2006; Diaper et al. 2006) and the casestudies examined for this project cover a large range ofurban residential and commercial development watermanagementoptions and include both new build andretrofi t case-study sites. The eight case-study siteswere:••••••••Pimpama Coomera — SEQ, new build, residentialsubdivisionPayne Road — SEQ, new build, small residentialsubdivisionThe Currumbin Ecovillage — SEQ, new build,residential subdivisionCH2 — Melbourne, new build, offi cesSouth East Water (SEW) and Bayside City Council(BaCC) — Melbourne, retrofi t, residentialAtherton Gardens — Melbourne, retrofi t, highdensity housingSustainable House — New South Wales, retrofi t,single residential60L — Melbourne, retrofi t, offi cesSome sites have an overall sustainability themeencompassing energy, material and operating costs,while others focus only on water services (Table 1).Eight case-study sites were selected for furtherstudy from a full list of case-study sites (Diaper et al.2006), with selection based on feedback from projectstakeholders, BCC, Brookwater and QueenslandGovernment departments and the following criteria:•••••••appropriate to individual dwelling through tocomplete subdivisionsapplicable to retrofi tting or re-engineering ofexisting housing stockdemonstrates alternative water-servicingtechnologiesdemonstrates transitioning of existing infrastructureprovides detail of fi nancial arrangements for projectimplementationimplemented in social housing stockimplemented in inner urban areas or commercialpremises.Some sites outside of SEQ were included todemonstrate valuable lessons and approachesapplicable to SEQ.The following section describes different technologiesfor rainwater, stormwater, greywater and wastewatercollection, treatment and use. The primary benefi tsto the urban water cycle and the potential issues andbarriers to implementation of each technology typeare described, incorporating information gained fromrelevant case studies. A review of strategies andtechnologies implemented in SEQ is also provided.6
