Conventions Used in This WorkFOLLOWING a practice common in his time, Swedenborg dividedhis published theological works into sections numbered in sequencefrom beginning to end. His original section numbers have been preservedin this edition. Traditionally, these sections have been referred toas “numbers” and designated by the abbreviation “n.” In this edition,however, the more common section symbol (§) is used to designate thesection numbers, and the sections are referred to as such.As is common in Swedenborgian studies, text citations of Swedenborg'sworks refer not to page numbers but to Swedenborg's sectionnumbers, which are uniform in most editions. Thus “Secrets of Heaven29” refers to section 29 (§29) of Swedenborg’s Secrets of Heaven.Biblical citations in this edition follow the accepted standard: a semicolonis used between book references and between chapter references,and a comma between verse references. Therefore “Matthew 5:11, 12;6:1; 10:41, 42; Luke 6:23, 35” refers to Matthew chapter 5, verses 11and 12; Matthew chapter 6, verse 1; Matthew chapter 10, verses 41 and42; and Luke chapter 6, verses 23 and 35. Swedenborg often incorporatedthe number of verses not actually represented in his text when listingverse numbers for a passage he quoted; these apparently constitute akind of “see also” reference to other material he felt was relevant, and aregenerally retained in this edition.Swedenborg made extensive cross-references within Divine Love andWisdom, but often did not cite the number of the section or sections towhich he was referring. These omitted cross-reference numbers havebeen inserted in square brackets [] in this edition.In a few cases Swedenborg supplied the section numbers, but theyare obviously in error. Where a plausible correction has been found, ithas been inserted in square brackets. These corrections have, furthermore,been italicized as an indication that they are intended to replacethe preceding entry, not augment it.This system has also been applied to citations of the Bible and ofSwe denborg’s works that appear in the main text of the translation: thatxi
