HISTORY OF THE NEW CHURCH 292<strong>Sketch</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Ecclesiastical</strong> <strong>History</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Church</strong>1. A new ecclesiastical history must be written, because now is <strong>the</strong>Lord’s advent predicted in Mat<strong>the</strong>w 24.2. The church was different before <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Nice, as longas <strong>the</strong> Apostles’ creed was in force. It became ch<strong>an</strong>ged after <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Nice, <strong>an</strong>d still more after<strong>the</strong> Ath<strong>an</strong>asi<strong>an</strong> creed was composed. The cardinal point <strong>of</strong> doctrine respecting <strong>the</strong> triune God <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>Lord was subverted in <strong>the</strong> church, especially by <strong>the</strong> dogma <strong>of</strong> three[Divine] persons from eternity.3. The books are to be enumerated which were written, from <strong>the</strong>beginning to <strong>the</strong> present day, by <strong>the</strong> Lord through me [a Dominoper me].4. The writing <strong>the</strong>re is such that it shines brightly before thosewho believe in <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>an</strong>d in <strong>the</strong> new revelation; but it appearsdark <strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> no consequence to those who deny <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>an</strong>d who arenot in favor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m on account <strong>of</strong> various external reasons.Experimental pro<strong>of</strong>s that <strong>the</strong>ir style <strong>of</strong> writing is such: (1) From<strong>the</strong> Dutch censors <strong>of</strong> books who were called toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> world<strong>of</strong> spirits; one <strong>of</strong> whom upon reading <strong>the</strong>se books said that <strong>the</strong>ywere preferable to all o<strong>the</strong>r books, except <strong>the</strong> Word; <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>rsaid that he saw nothing in <strong>the</strong>m except vain, novel, <strong>an</strong>d f<strong>an</strong>tasticalthings, <strong>an</strong>d that <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y were to be rejected as <strong>of</strong> no account.(2) The same thing happened in Engl<strong>an</strong>d, where <strong>the</strong>y were sent to<strong>the</strong> universities, because <strong>the</strong> ecclesiastical order had rejected <strong>the</strong>m.(3) About those in Gottenberg: Beyer, Rosen, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs;although some see <strong>the</strong> greatness <strong>of</strong> God in <strong>the</strong>m, o<strong>the</strong>rs see nothingexcept what is utterly worthless. (4) In Sweden [<strong>the</strong>y are lookedupon in one way] by Filenius, <strong>an</strong>d in a different way altoge<strong>the</strong>r byo<strong>the</strong>rs, who may perhaps be named. (5) When I read to myself <strong>the</strong>writings which I had printed, <strong>the</strong>y appeared to me vain, as long as a

HISTORY OF THE NEW CHURCH 293certain cunning <strong>an</strong>d sinister one was present, but it was different in<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. (6) The same thing took place in Swedenwith him, who is writing a literary history. Besides o<strong>the</strong>r inst<strong>an</strong>ces.5. About Oetinger, in Wurtemberg, from his letter.6. About Gottingen.7. When Brief Exposition was published, <strong>the</strong> <strong>an</strong>gelic heaven from<strong>the</strong> east to <strong>the</strong> west, <strong>an</strong>d from <strong>the</strong> south to <strong>the</strong> north, appeared <strong>of</strong> adeep scarlet color with <strong>the</strong> most beautiful flowers. This took placebefore myself, <strong>an</strong>d before <strong>the</strong> kings <strong>of</strong> Denmark <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>rs.At <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r time it appeared flamy, most beautiful.8. In <strong>the</strong> spiritual world <strong>the</strong>re was inscribed on all <strong>the</strong>se books,“The Lord’s Advent.” The same I also wrote by comm<strong>an</strong>d on twocopies in Holl<strong>an</strong>d. 3535. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se copies has been found. On <strong>the</strong> inside page <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrapper whichis bound up with <strong>the</strong> volume <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> following inscription in <strong>Swedenborg</strong>’sown h<strong>an</strong>dwriting:(2513)HIC LIBER EST ADVENTUS DOMINI, {4535}SCRIPTUM EX MANDATO {6895}(8427, p. 19)[This book is <strong>the</strong> Lord’s Advent, written by comm<strong>an</strong>d.]In <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>an</strong>d is inserted A.R., n. 626.See Documents Concerning <strong>Swedenborg</strong>, Vol. 2, Pt. 2, pages 756–757.[—Tr<strong>an</strong>slator]
