Three Alumni Return as Dist<strong>in</strong>guished LecturersThree Westm<strong>in</strong>ster <strong>College</strong> alumni—Shirley Bigley LaMotte ’76, Alice Hill Brown’83, and L<strong>in</strong>da Wright Simpson ’81—werehonored as Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Alumni lecturersdur<strong>in</strong>g Homecom<strong>in</strong>g 2010.Shirley Bigley LaMotte, chief executiveofficer of Baltimore Literacy Corporation(Baltimore Reads, Inc.), was hosted byWestm<strong>in</strong>ster’s Department of Religion,History, Philosophy and Classics. BigleyLaMotte visited several classes with<strong>in</strong> thedepartment and held <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal discussionswith students.In addition to her work with the literacyorganization, Bigley LaMotte also servesas a member of the Baltimore mayor’scab<strong>in</strong>et, the mayor’s sub-cab<strong>in</strong>et on humandevelopment, the Baltimore Work<strong>for</strong>ceInvestment Board, and is a governor’sappo<strong>in</strong>tee to the Adult EducationTransition Council.She holds a juris doctorate from theUniversity of Maryland School of Law.Alice Hill Brown, a biologist at the FBILaboratory <strong>in</strong> Quantico, Va., lectured on“DNA, the FBI and Life.” Her visit was hostedby Westm<strong>in</strong>ster’s Department of Chemistry.Brown jo<strong>in</strong>ed the FBI Laboratory <strong>in</strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C., <strong>in</strong> 1984 as a biologicallaboratory technician. She has coauthoredseveral papers <strong>for</strong> presentationand publication and received numerousper<strong>for</strong>mance and achievement awards.Dean Jesse Mann, left, and President Richard Dorman, right, gather with Dist<strong>in</strong>guished LecturersShirley Bigley LaMotte, second from left, Alice Hill Brown, center, and L<strong>in</strong>da Wright Simpson.L<strong>in</strong>da Wright Simpson, a U.S. bankruptcyadm<strong>in</strong>istrator <strong>for</strong> the western district ofNorth Carol<strong>in</strong>a, discussed “<strong>Math</strong> Geek orLawyer—the Coolness Factor” dur<strong>in</strong>g hervisit, which was hosted by Westm<strong>in</strong>ster’sDepartment of <strong>Math</strong>ematics and Computer<strong>Science</strong>.Simpson primary practice area <strong>for</strong> 25years is <strong>in</strong> bankruptcy litigation andadm<strong>in</strong>istration.She has been active <strong>in</strong> legal educationprograms; committees provid<strong>in</strong>g adviceto the Judicial Conference of the UnitedStates; has provided testimony to theNational Bankruptcy Review Commission;and was a member of a delegation thatprovided assistance to the BankruptcyCourts of Thailand.Simpson is also serv<strong>in</strong>g her second term onWestm<strong>in</strong>ster’s Board of Trustees.She earned her juris doctorate from theUniversity of North Carol<strong>in</strong>a School of Law.She has served as an elder at Westm<strong>in</strong>sterPresbyterian Church <strong>in</strong> Charlotte, N.C., andreceived an honorary life membershipto the Presbyterian <strong>Women</strong> of thePresbyterian Church, U.S.A.New trusteesTwo Westm<strong>in</strong>ster alumni—Rob<strong>in</strong> Willoughby Gooch ‘75 and Glenn Thompson ’68—wererecently appo<strong>in</strong>ted to the Westm<strong>in</strong>ster <strong>College</strong> Board of Trustees.Gooch and her husband, David Gooch ’75, are co-owners <strong>for</strong> V.A.M. Associates Inc., of Chagr<strong>in</strong>Falls, Ohio, a steel and metals wholesale distribution firm that the couple founded <strong>in</strong> 1991.She served as president of Alumni Council at Westm<strong>in</strong>ster and she is also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> area civicorganizations <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Girl Scouts, Chagr<strong>in</strong> Soccer Association, and the St. Jude Run <strong>for</strong>the Cure.Thompson recently retired as chief operat<strong>in</strong>g officer of Plextronics Inc. of Pittsburgh, ahigh technology firm specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> organic solar cell and light emitt<strong>in</strong>g diode technology.Previously, he had retired from PPG, where he served as vice president of its South AmericanCoat<strong>in</strong>gs Operations and as director of bus<strong>in</strong>ess development.He holds a master’s degree <strong>in</strong> polymer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
