Centers of ExcellenceCenter for Women and Financial ServicesThe State Farm Center for Women and Financial Services has accomplished manyexciting objectives since receiving its visionary $2.8 million gift from State Farmin early 2011. The Center Director, Mary Quist-Newins, CFP ® , CLU ® , ChFC ® , hashired staff, established an advisory board consisting of thought-leaders from theindustry, academia and media, and launched the Center’s content-rich website.The Center celebrated the academic achievements of women in financial servicesby co-sponsoring the inaugural “Women of The American College: Leadershipthrough Learning” recognition breakfast at the Knowledge Summit in Las Vegas inJune 2011. The Center’s next event is the Women’s Leadership Academy Summit,taking place February 23-24, 2012 in Grapevine, Texas. The Summit will featuredynamic speakers, academically rigorous content, community building, workshopsessions, a panel discussion on leadership best practices, and CE credits toward aCLF ® designation.Quist-Newins promotes awareness of women’s issues within the industry byspeaking at events for State Farm, NAIFA, Financial Planning Association,Women in Insurance and Financial Services, and the Conference for AfricanAmerican Financial Professionals. She also has published articles in The WealthChannel Magazine, Financial Planning Magazine and GAMA InternationalJournal.Mary Quist-Newins, CFP ® , CLU ® , ChFC ®David A. Littell, JD, ChFC ® , CFP ®6Kenn Beam Tacchino, JD, LLMCenter forRetirement IncomeIn 2011, the New York Life Center for Retirement Incomecontinued to deliver relevant and useful content, mostnotably in the form of videos posted on its website. In June 2011, the Center for Ethics in Financial Services named Julie A. Ragatz asits new Director. Ragatz joined the Center in 2006 as a doctoral fellow and wasappointed the Associate Director in 2010. She is currently finishing her Ph.D. inPhilosophy at Temple University, where she specializes in ethical theory and focusesspecifically on ethical issues in the financial services industry. In September 2011the College hired Assistant Director, Elizabeth Rohr, CLU ® , ChFC ® , who previouslyworked as marketing director at First Keystone Bank, in addition to positions atAIG, Vanguard and Reliance Standard Life.James A. Mitchell, CLU ® , ChFC ®The Center for Ethics continued to hold several eventslast year, beginning in January with the 11 th Annual JamesA. and Linda R. Mitchell Forum on Ethical Leadership inFinancial Services. The forum’s purpose is two-fold—to allowfinancial services executives to reflect on ethical issuesthey confront on a regular basis with questions posed tothem by academics engaged in business ethics education,and to engage academics in conversation with senior levelexecutives so they can bring the real-world experiencesdiscussed back to their classrooms.In addition to the Mitchell Forum, the Center hosted itssemi-annual “members only” corporate retreats, a foundingindustry fellow “members only” retreat held in November,and the second annual Cary M. Maguire Ethics Lecturewhich took place in June. The lecture is a forum for sharingthe work and insights of the Cary M. Maguire Fellow at TheAmerican College, Dr. Anthony H. Catanach, Jr. The 2011lecture by Dr. Catanach was titled “Combating the CheatingCulture: An Accounting Moral Compass.”Other Ethics Center 2011 activities included developinga new Course, CE 110, “Ethical Issues When Dealing withElderly Clients,” upgrading the Center’s website, launchingthe first edition of the Center’s newsletter, and publishing aninaugural column by Ragatz in the September issue of BrokerWorld magazine. In addition, Ragatz was featured in an articlein the November Issue of Financial Planning magazine,which highlighted how the Center’s courses teach financialplanners to make ethical decisions in the workplace.The Center launched a new content management systemand video player, Limelight, to further improve the website’sstreaming capabilities and to offer customized playersfor training courses and other educational programs.Another recent addition to the website is a series ofseminars providing in-depth discussions on topics such assaving for retirement, reverse mortgages, annuities in theretirement income plan, and retirement income strategies.Co-directed by David A. Littell, JD, ChFC ® , CFP ® , andKenn Beam Tacchino, JD, LLM, the Retirement Centerlaunched the first edition of its newsletter, “The Bulletin,”in August 2011. The newsletter updates subscribers oncurrent retirement issues, news articles of interest, andrecent video content.Most recently, the Center has been developing a newretirement planning designation, which is discussedin-depth on page 3 within the feature articleon designations.7

The program gives professorsand designers the opportunity to judge their courses againstproven educational practices. Participants perform a selfevaluationof their own course, as well as receive detailedfeedback from colleagues in the online education community.The College’s Investments course was assessed on threemain areas: course design, interaction and collaboration, andassessment. In addition to being recognized for educationaleffectiveness in these three rubric components, the coursereceived accolades for the active and engaging studymaterials provided to students. Individual Gifts in 2011An Unforgettable DonorNed Packell was like many insurance agents in that he deeply enjoyed taking care ofpeople. Through the magic of life insurance he could provide a family with peace ofmind or protect a businessman’s livelihood. But Packell also differed from the typicalagent in one major way. He used the product he believed in the most to make alegendary gift to the nonprofit institution that helped shape his career.Packell, who passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 9, 2011 at age 68, gifted a$500,000 life insurance policy to The American College in 1988. Beginning in 1961, he graduated as valedictorian of his class at CasciaHall Preparatory School, received a college degree from the University of Tulsa, and went on to earn five designationsand degrees from The American College over the course of 28 years.A graduate of the CLU ® , ChFC ® , MSFS, RHU ® , and REBC ® programs, he proudly displayed his diplomas and certificatesin his office. His relationship with The American College also included Annual Fund donations and contributions to theGolden Key Society. Packell was a very successful general agent, achieving membership in Top of the Table and lifetimemembership in the Million Dollar Round Table.His life held many fascinating adventures. He loved to travel, whether it was spending summer family vacations in SanibelIsland or embarking on an African safari with his son, Elliott, in 2000. He was a marathon runner who had a black belt inTae Kwon Do. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro at the age of 58, without oxygen.Packell was also known for his quick wit and sharp mind. He belonged to Mensa, the high IQ society which boastsmembers who score in the top 2 percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test. One of his favoritepastimes was playing gin rummy, a thinking man’s game. He had a knack for remembering every card that was played,making him tough to beat.Packell made his $500,000 life insurance gift to The American College through the 21 st Century Endowment Fund.
