September 28 th 2009. Free to members, non members Rmb50
***Important Notice***
A number of boat owners have still not paid SYC for their boat
storage fees. You must pay this immediately or may be liable for
penalty fees and further action to recover outstanding sums. It is
unfair to SYC, our friendly landlords, to delay payment any further
and puts relationships under the kind of stress that we could all do
without. Please. Keep Building a Harmonious Sailing Club…
From the Poop Deck - Commodores Log
Look forward to seeing lots of you out at the lake during the National Day Holidays. A great
chance to come out, linger a little longer than usual and perhaps even camp overnight…
Thanks to all those who stepped up at late notice to help with the Regatta. Benoit
Rossignol, Peter Stegger, Uli Biller, Mario Baldi, Compton Tothill, Bruce Balance. As Koen
has said we need all members to do their bit to keep our programme of events as full as it
is.
Please do take note the SYC will be chasing up outstanding storage fees and
implementing a new sticker system to identify those that have paid. Please do work with
SYC to clear up any overdue payments. Better still, get the money to them before they
have to track you down.
Safety Officer Tim is asking for names to be recorded as competent helms for dinghies
and the RIB. It seems that the MCA are being more active in checking things on the lake
so we must all ensure our housekeeping is in order.
Start Point – Racing Secretary’s Message
The autumn series starts on October 10 th , sharpen your excuses this is officially a
working day! Winds are usually very good for racing at this time of year so bulk up over
the holidays too, unless you have already done so.
Last call for the Hebe Haven 24 hour race on 10/11 th October. Time is running out to
make confirmations so members are asked to contact Colin at
joining.
There is a small group from Shanghai confirmed but more are needed. We have a race
entry already and a Laser Stratos reserved for our use. If people want me to arrange
accomodation I can do that too but need
plenty of notice. All in a good cause too.
Many thanks to Compton Tothill for
providing race report for the racing on
Sunday 20 th September, and a great
endorsement for volunteering as race
officer – who’s next? Don’t be shy…
Sunday part of the 19-20 September SYBC
weekend regatta.
Well you couldn’t have wished for better
weather; sun, blue, blue sky, warm (no
wetsuit needed), water clear of that green
slime and a stiff, steady breeze made for a
great series of 4 races. Even though there
were only 7 boats, the racing was
competitive and combative to the extent of a
couple of really contentious incidents,
incurring penalties.
The conditions favoured Dirk W’s Supercat
in a big way, carrying away first place in the
first 3 races until his mast support rig broke
and he limped back to safety (not to deny
his consummate skill helming such a dream
machine!). That helped Rick get his 470 up
to win the last race, with Nina second on the
Vision and Rob third on his Weta.
Dirk K. came second in the first race in his 470, followed by Rick in third place. Jean –Louis
came second in his storming NACRA in race 2, just edging our Nina for third. Nina came
second again in the third race, with Rick just seconds behind for third
Being my first attempt at race officer, it was a huge learning experience, but hey, if I can do it,
I am sure many of the members could do it. Thanks to Koen’s clear instructions and a few tips
from Tim and ably supported by Bruce as RIB driver, we managed to get it done with only a
couple of minor slip-ups (like the names of the crew members). It was a also for me a really
interesting day, I would highly recommend others to volunteer for race officer, I learned a lot!
As some of you may have read a couple
of months back in the Shanghai Daily
SBYC founding member Nor
Coquillard, who we haven’t seen on the
lake in some time, has forsaken the
winds of Ding Shan Hu for greater
glory on the racing circuits of China.
Nor has been racing his own cars for
the last few years and usually
manages to make it on the podium (see
below) in his Honda in local
races. This year he has teamed with his race engineer to start a fully professional
team to compete in China’s premier racing competition, the China Touring Car
Championship (CTCC). Nor and team run a BMW – the first one ever to race in
this series in China – in the large car category and a Honda Fit in the small car
race. Success so far in the competition has been elusive as the larger and better
funded teams such as the Ford factory team and a number of Hong Kong based
outfits usually take the top spots. The CTCC series is run all around the country.
The three Shanghai area races have already been completed. The remaining three
races of the season are in Beijing and Guangdong. The races are broadcast live on
Guangdong Satellite TV.
(Note we are always looking for sponsors)
Class News
The Weta Nationals have had to be postponed until next year. Shame but sometimes
these things can’t be helped. Watch out for more on this in future editions.
Section
Elite Yachting (China) is planning to open a small chandlery business on the main road
close to the sailing club to cater for the needs of the local and expat sailing
community. Currently the shop is being prepared with a planned opening towards the end
of October. Intention is to stock consumables, sailing gear, ropes clothing etc. and
also have links to a mail order chandlery for more specialized items. A repair facility is
also envisaged to handle the usual knocks and scrapes to the boats sailing in and around
Dianshan Lake.
Hokkaido is the up and coming holiday
destination for Chinese tourists and
offers 4 season holiday activities. I have
one 2 bedroom (sleeps 4) apartment in
Niseko available for China based
residents at ‘laundry cost’ only (sheets
and towels) on a first come first served
basis until the end of October. Get
yourself to Niseko via Sapporo and
the accommodation is yours
(subject to availability). Hokkaido in
her autumn colours is stunning. Now I
have got your attention: Ski apartments in Niseko (home of some of the best
powder snow in the world) are for sale at reduced prices, now from Rmb1.8 million
only (subject to exchange rate fluctuations and commitment by end 2009) for October
2010 handover, only 5% downpayment. Snow is water so skiing must be a water sport.
