DanLENTEN REGULATIONSThe season of Lent begins this year on Ash Wednesday, February13, 2013 and ends just prior to the evening Mass of theLord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013, whenthe Paschal Triduum begins. Lent is the principal penitentialseason in the Church year.All the Christian faithful are urged to develop and maintain avoluntary program of self denial (in addition to the Lentenregulations which follow), serious prayer, and the performingof deeds of charity and mercy, including the giving of alms.LENTEN REGULATIONS – Please share with your parishionersthe following Lenten regulations:1. ABSTINENCE – Everyone 14 years of age and over isbound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all theFridays of Lent.2. FAST – Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is requiredto fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one fullmeatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficientto maintain strength may be taken according to eachperson’s needs, but together these two should not equalanother full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted,but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed.3. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence isseriously sinful.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 10, 2013PSROur Communal Reconciliation is now scheduled for Tuesday, March 12 th . The service ishere at 7:00pm. It is at this service that our second graders, and eighth graders will receiveReconciliation in preparation for their sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. March 17 that 2:00pm will be another opportunity in case you are already booked for March the 12 th . Thatservice will be at St. Boniface Church. Parents are being asked to take responsibility for theirchild to receive this sacrament as they prepare for the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.The R.C.I.A. Candidates are expected to be present at the St. Cecilia service. I knowthat your calendars fill up fast, but please keep these dates open for the opportunity of bringingyour family along with the second grader or the Confirmand to receive this sacrament. Therewill be several priests, so all should move quickly.R.C.I.A.Each Candidate and Catechumen is looking forward to Holy Saturday; the day that they areaccepted into our Church. It is a time of prayer and reflection for them also. As they prayabout this important change in their lives, they are also looking ahead to next week when theywill travel to Springfield to be called forth in front of other Candidates and Catechumens ofour Alton Deanery to be accepted by Bishop Popracki. Letters have been sent already to theBishop approving of their readiness and they, the Candidates and Catechumens themselves,have written to the Bishop asking for acceptance into the church. Our R.C.I.A. team hopesthat as you witness the scrutinies during the season of Lent, you will be moved to ponder onyour own commitments of being an active, participating Catholic in our parish. You may alsorecall how simple it was for you to come into the church as a cradle Catholic; no classes, expectations,or meeting with the Bishop in order to be received. Likewise, many Jews who arenot otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refrainingfrom work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God's promisethat our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive MardiGras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God,people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmedrelationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and "clear the air" by askingfor understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year.Perhaps the ashes you receive will be investedwith deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 5, and Yom KippurSeptember 14.
