_____________________________________________________________________________________ AGAPTHINK TANK 2007John HillBeginning in 2004 as an informal gathering ofanalysts from AGAP, SGAP, CGJI, ISAPZURICH,the Psychological Club and Marie Louise vonFranz Zentrum — the Think Tank continued tobe active in 2007. Meetings were held fivetimes during the year at the KulturhausHelferei, with an average of 20 colleagues attending.The Think Tank’s overall focus continuesto be the significance of ‘Zürich’ for Jungianpsychology today. From the start, the formathas remained more or less the same: 30 minutesfor dreams and fantasies, followed by themain presentation and ending with discussion.The first meeting of 2007 opened with an excellentpresentation on psychodrama and traumaby Marco Della Chiesa. Afterwards he staged asociodrama of the six Jungian organizations inZürich. Colleagues present had to join one ofthese institutes and a playful drama began withdialogue and movement between the differentinstitutes.The April meeting began with a lively discussionon dreams, bringing to attention a tension betweena romantic and city attitude to psychology,as well as a vertical and horizontal axisevident in contemporary Jungian thought.There followed an informative presentation byMurray Stein on the important conferencesponsored jointly by the IAAP and IAJS to beheld at the ETH in Zürich, July 2008. Zürichcould contribute a lot to this conference, notonly the local Jungian groups and universitiesbut also organizations such as PsychoCity andCollegium Helveticum and individuals such asProfessor Nesper on Pauli, Fritz Senn on Joyceor Bejart who has created a ballet on Jung. TheJune meeting opened with the theme: “Newwine needs new wine skins”. A dream of theZürichsee being full of dead stagnant waterprovoked discussion on the new life witnessedin the recent, very successful theatrical presentationof the Jung-White letters, the JungianOdyssey, the increasing revival of a communityconsciousness and the creation of new bridgesto business schools and leadership trainingprograms. Regina Schweizer made a thoughtprovokingpresentation on: “Do we still use thesame language”. Applying the alchemical imageof the “chain connection” between spirit andmatter, she alerted us to the dangers of thechain becoming too long, as when personalexperience is missing, connection with transcendenceis lost, or Jungian concepts becomedogma. Zürich, asthe Alma Mater for many, has still a powerfulpresence at the congress, and yet there is distressabout Zürich, about “the parents beingtorn apart”.Allan Guggenbühl in his witty and challengingway talked about on the role of evil in analyticalpsychology. People usually avoid their darkersides, by presenting a positive image of themselvesin order to remain sane and successful.The analyst should concentrate more on the“unpleasant”, consider an antagonist, confrontativeapproach and not simply support selfimagesthat empower delusions. John Hill, therespondent, proposed that we should maintaina distance from the collective shadow, but beas connected as possible with the personalshadow. Evil can be numinous; it can unhingeus. A lively discussion followed on themes as:distinguishing psyche’s dark side from evil,intentional evil, evil created from ‘good intentions’,evil as a sense of coldness, metaphysicalevil.
