The overall arrangem<strong>en</strong>t exactly follows the temperature course ofthe thermally inert masses and stabilises the machining process. The exceedingly lowwear of the ceramic sliding surfaces in the slider has no influ<strong>en</strong>ce on the precision. Thereliable scanning produced by the small measuring gap is trouble-free due to its principle(the accuracy is not capable of being influ<strong>en</strong>ced by materials in the measuring gap). Theaccuracy is thus giv<strong>en</strong> right up to the <strong>en</strong>d of the service life. Maint<strong>en</strong>ance costs andmaint<strong>en</strong>ance work do not accrue. The modular design of the system makes possible thereplacem<strong>en</strong>t of the measuring head without any adjustm<strong>en</strong>t being necessary.


Free of wearThe magnetic tape is glued into the bottom of the groove magnetically insulating andattached at its <strong>en</strong>ds by means of spot welds. It is hermetically sealed with a non-wearingcovering strip, which protects it from mechanical and chemical influ<strong>en</strong>ces.The covering strip forms the running surface for the sliders of the measuring head (thesame hardness as the running surfaces of the rail). The measuring methodEstablishm<strong>en</strong>t of the material measureThe measuring strip contains two magnetised tracks. The finely graduatedincrem<strong>en</strong>tal track consists of poles with a width of 200µm, which are alternatelyarranged in longitudinal direction. The refer<strong>en</strong>ce track for the determination ofthe absolute position is provided with distance-coded refer<strong>en</strong>ce marks.Magneto-resistive measuring principleIn case of a relative movem<strong>en</strong>t betwe<strong>en</strong> the s<strong>en</strong>sor and the material measure,the change in the field str<strong>en</strong>gth in the magneto-resistive s<strong>en</strong>sor material leadsto a well measurable change of the electric resistance. Construction of the s<strong>en</strong>sorDue to the arrangem<strong>en</strong>t of the sickle-shaped s<strong>en</strong>sor elem<strong>en</strong>ts, two sinus-shaped signalswith a 90° phase shift are obtained from the increm<strong>en</strong>tal magnetisation. For the <strong>en</strong>hancem<strong>en</strong>tof the accuracy, the signals of 102 individual strips are averaged. Because thestructure of the s<strong>en</strong>sor is adapted to the magnetic graduation period, the influ<strong>en</strong>ce ofinterfering magnetisations is strongly suppressed. The refer<strong>en</strong>ce marks are implem<strong>en</strong>tedin triplicate for the exact definition of the switching flanks.Processing of the measuring signalsThe increm<strong>en</strong>tal s<strong>en</strong>sor signals are conducted into high-performance driver stagesthrough high-grade instrum<strong>en</strong>t amplifiers. The measuring methodAutomatic amplitude adjustm<strong>en</strong>t "AGC"The curr<strong>en</strong>t amplitude (repres<strong>en</strong>ted by the periodic signals) is continuallydetermined in the measuring electronics.
