The weightlifter uses impressive power to lift heavy weights during
a short period. The rower has the endurance to row his boat until
he reaches the finishing line. But who is the strongest?
That depends on how you measure.
The way the strength of corrugated boxes is measured today is
similar to a weightlifting contest. The box is subjected to heavy
pressure over a short period of time until it collapses. The paper in
a package is tested in the same way – it takes less than a minute to
measure its strength. But real transport chains last longer than this.
They are like long and demanding races where what counts is
endurance. That is why boxes and paper should be tested under
conditions similar to those facing the rower. A measurement
method should define true, enduring performance.
TesTs Today only assess peak load
The traditional testing method for paper used in corrugated board
– Corrugated Crush Tests, CCT – is used by paper manufacturers
all over the world. In the test, the corrugated medium is crushed
using a compression tester. The paper’s specification is determined
by the peak load it can withstand before collapsing. This value is
used to compare the performance of different qualities. But does
this testing method give a fair result?
CCT 10
Billerud has developed a new test method that better simulates
reality. The paper’s real performance is revealed by simulating the
stress and strain it is subjected to in real transport chains. We call
our method CCT 10 .
Time
load
The stress and strain does
not reveal itself until the
paper has been subjected to
a load for a period of time.
CCT 10 evaluates the weight
a paper can withstand over
a period of ten days.
CCT 10 subjects the paper to
an even, constant load instead
of a peak load.
ClimaTe
Long transport chains are often
characterised by climate variations
and, at times, very high humidity.
CCT 10 is performed in an environment
with 90 percent humidity, i.e.
in very demanding conditions.
CCT 10 reveals True performanCe
CCT 10 reveals why many packaging solutions do not satisfy the
most fundamental requirement – protecting goods. All too many
paper qualities, which, in the traditional test, achieve relatively
similar and approved results, show very different values when
tested for endurance. Some papers are able to carry heavy loads
for a long period of time in a humid climate, while others fail.
CCT 10 reduCes wasTe
Billerud’s measurement method helps both manufacturers and
users of packaging. CCT 10 shows that with the right choice of
paper, it is possible to reduce packaging weight and still increase
performance. The packaging producer can be certain that he will
deliver strong boxes and the user can rest assured in the know-
ledge that his goods will safely reach their final destination in
perfect condition.
CCT 10 – developed in Billerud Box laB
Billerud Box Lab at the Gruvön paper mill is the laboratory that
can simulate reality. Here, innumerable qualities of fluting and
corrugated board designs are tested. For more information about
Billerud Box Lab and CCT 10 , visit our website
www.billerud.com/CCT10.
The corrugated board’s medium determines to a large degree how strong the packaging
will be. It is the fluting that is measured in corrugated crush Tests and in ccT 10 .
The diagram shows a comparison between the primary fibre quality Billerud Flute ® (red)
and a 30% heavier recycled fibre medium (blue). under normal testing conditions, the
recycled paper appears to be much stronger (1). But if we look at what load the different
papers can withstand over a period of ten days, we see that the primary fibre quality has
a value of 64 kilograms per metre (2) while the blue recycled quality can withstand 60
kilograms (3). The test curves also reveal that the load the primary fibre can withstand
over a period of ten days causes the recycled fluting to collapse in less than half that
time – 4.3 days (4).
CCT 10 is based on the standardised test method
CCT. The same equipment is used, but our
method simulates reality. The load is constant,
the time is ten days and the climate is demand-
ing. The paper qualities that perform well in
CCT 10 also perform better during difficult and
demanding transportation.
