11 th October 2010NEW EXIT ROAD AT SAINSBURY’S CANLEY REDUCING TIME,COSTS AND EMISSIONSA traffic survey has revealed that <strong>the</strong> new exit road at <strong>Sa<strong>in</strong>sbury</strong>’s recently extended <strong>Canley</strong>store is sav<strong>in</strong>g customers time and money, as well as reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> store’s carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t.The new road, lead<strong>in</strong>g onto Renown Avenue at <strong>the</strong> back of <strong>the</strong> store, has recently beenprovided <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g store access/egress, mean<strong>in</strong>g Coventry-bound customers donot have to negotiate <strong>the</strong> six sets of traffic lights that form <strong>the</strong> gyratory system <strong>in</strong> and to <strong>the</strong>north of <strong>the</strong> retail park.The survey, carried out on a Friday and Saturday <strong>in</strong> September, measured all <strong>in</strong>bound andoutbound traffic, as well as park<strong>in</strong>g demand.An assessment was also carried out of <strong>the</strong> mileage and time saved by Coventry-boundcustomers us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> secondary egress, which amount to a quarter of all traffic leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> store.The results show that each customer us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new road saved an average of 12.5 miles ayear, based on an average number of shopp<strong>in</strong>g trips.Applied to a quarter of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Canley</strong> store’s custom from motorists, <strong>the</strong> annual sav<strong>in</strong>g is 103,807miles – or <strong>the</strong> equivalent of driv<strong>in</strong>g over four times around <strong>the</strong> earth’s equator – a huge sav<strong>in</strong>gon both fuel costs and time.Due to <strong>the</strong> number of traffic signals with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gyratory system, <strong>the</strong> time sav<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong> store’scustomers us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new road work out at an annual average of 1 hour and 48 m<strong>in</strong>utes percustomer, or 15,138 hours comb<strong>in</strong>ed - an equivalent of over 630 days a year.In addition to time and money, <strong>the</strong> reduced travell<strong>in</strong>g is also mak<strong>in</strong>g a significant contribution toreduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> store’s carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t, whilst <strong>the</strong> reduction of traffic us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gyratory system isalso benefitt<strong>in</strong>g customers and o<strong>the</strong>r motorists that do pass through it.
