President’s <strong>Report</strong> 2010-2011Giving18Philanthropy helps transform JCSU<strong>Johnson</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong> <strong>University</strong> is rising to the occasionas it transforms into Charlotte’s premier independenturban university. The progress <strong>Johnson</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong><strong>University</strong> has enjoyed this past year would not havebeen possible without the dedication and support ofalumni and friends.During 2010-2011, the <strong>University</strong> furtherstrengthened its financial standing with gifts thatsupport students and facilities. Such support enablesthe <strong>University</strong> to continue its long legacy of producingcompassionate and forward-thinking leaders.Charitable giving to <strong>Johnson</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong> <strong>University</strong>totaled $7,561,130 for FY 2011. Unrestricted giftsBroad-based supportCorporate, foundation and organization gifts totaled$2,089,360, a seven percent increase over the prior year.Collectively, this group provided more than $353,000in expendable scholarship support to JCSU students.Individual support in other areas was substantial. Mostnotable was a $360,000 Cato Corporation grant thatrecognizes excellence in teaching by JCSU faculty. TheCato Par Excellence Endowed Teaching Award notonly provides an annual stipend to a deserving facultymember, but also funds professional developmentto the JCSU Fund accounted for 57 percent of totalgiving, with the remaining 43 percent primarilydesignated for academic programs, faculty and studentsupport, and revitalization efforts along the WestTrade/Beatties Ford Road Corridor.The Duke Endowment and UNCF continued theirstrong advocacy and support of the <strong>University</strong>’sstrategic direction with gifts totaling $4,432,000and $333,554, respectively, to support enrollmentmanagement, scholarship, capital campaign planning,the Center for Applied Leadership and CommunityDevelopment, the Metropolitan College and theJCSU Fund.activities within the faculty member’s academicdepartment. The Wells Fargo Foundation confirmedonce again its confidence in the <strong>University</strong>’s efforts torevitalize the West Trade/Beatties Ford Road corridorby contributing an additional $250,000 to supplementits FY 2010 gift of $500,000.
