President’s <strong>Report</strong> 2010-2011Donor Profile: Shirley J. HughesShirley J. Hughes serves on the<strong>Johnson</strong> C. <strong>Smith</strong> <strong>University</strong> Boardof Trustees, chairs the InstitutionalAdvancement Committee and is amember of the Executive Committee.She is a former corporate executive,having retired in April 2005 as anOfficer and Senior Vice Presidentof Human Resources at MinneapolisbasedCeridian Corporation, aninformation services company(formerly Control DataCorporation). She also served asVice President, Human Resourcesfor Mercy Health Services from1994-1998 (now Trinity Health), amultibillion-dollar and multi-statehealth care provider headquartered inFarmington Hills, Mich.Hughes graduated from Coe Collegein Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a B.A.in political science. She currentlyserves on the boards of directors ofCoe College, Second Harvest (anaffiliate of Feeding America) in St.Paul, Minn.; the Foundation for BlueCross Blue Shield of Minnesota; andGraywolf Press. She is a member ofthe Minnesota Women’s EconomicRoundtable, the Minneapolis-St.Paul Chapter of the Links, Inc. andthe Minneapolis-St. Paul Chapter ofGirlfriends, R, Inc.She is passionately committed toJCSU and started an endowedscholarship in her name. A regularcontributor to the JCSU Fund,Hughes said: “The vision and focusof the board, Dr. Carter, faculty andstaff on excellence is moving JCSUfrom a good to a great university,preparing its graduates to succeedin a global society. Once a course ofaction is determined, things moverapidly and results are achieved.
