Is that a big
mining scar on the
hill above Dawson?
The scar in the hillside above Dawson, called
Moosehide Slide is actually the result of an ancient
landslide, not mining activity. The slide has historically
been used as a navigational tool for river
travellers. On a side note, no person can stake
a new placer mining claim within the city limits.
Rumour has it though, that gold fever led a local
man to sink a shaft below his restaurant! In another
story, a mining company wanted to pay to relocate
the Dawson town site so they could mine it!
Did you know gold is 19
times heavier than water?
88% of all gold mined in
the Yukon comes from the
Dawson area.
A gold nugget was
unearthed in the Klondike
that weighed over 72 oz.
It was nearly 6" long.
In 1898, the nugget was
valued at $1,158.
Today, it would be worth
well over $160,000.
The Klondike got its name
from the Indian word
“Thron Diuck” meaning
“Hammer Water”. Early
settlers had difficulty with
the pronunciation and thus
it became KLON-DIKE.
200 lbs. bacon, 800 lbs.
flour, 200 lbs. corn meal,
150 lbs. beans, 75 lbs.
sugar, 150 lbs. dried
fruits, 50 lbs. rice,
75 lbs. coffee and
1 case of condensed
milk were on the list of
mandatory goods brought
over the Chilkoot Pass.
In 1904 the Klondike was
the largest gold producer
in Canada and the fourth
largest in the world.
The steamer ‘Seattle’
returned from Dawson
City in November
1897 with $800,000
in drafts and securities
and 35 lbs. of gold.
The Yukon River is
2200 miles long (3520
km), the 3rd longest in
North America.
More than 250
sternwheelers plied Yukon
waters from 1896 to the
mid 1950s. At one time,
there were up to 70 of the
majestic riverboats on the
Yukon River alone.
The engines that turned
the massive paddle wheels
on Yukon's riverboats
burned a cord of wood
per hour. The 500 mile
journey from Whitehorse to
Dawson City took only 40
hours while it took as much
as 4 days the other way.
In 1905, the Dawson City
Nuggets participated in the
Stanley Cup. Such was the
enthusiasm of the Yukon team,
that the players themselves
bankrolled part of the
4,400-mile trip out of their own
pockets, hoping to regain
the $3,000 cost from gate
receipts. The trip has become a
fantastic legend in Cup history.
A Yukon prospector by the
name of Colonel Joe Boyle
arranged the trip for the
ambitious Klondikers. The
team traveled 46 miles by
dogsled the first day and 41
miles the next. Temperatures
were in the neighborhood of
20 below zero, and some
players suffered blistered feet
on the third day of traveling.
The team missed a boat
connection on the west coast,
and had to wait five days
for another, which took them
from Seattle to Vancouver.
Then, it was a marathon train
ride, Vancouver to Ottawa.
Somehow, the Dawson City
team arrived, after 23 days of
travel, just one day before the
series with the Ottawa Silver
Seven was to begin.
The Dawson City team was
simply no match, losing the
opening game, 9-2, and the
second and deciding match, a
record loss of 22-3. Ottawa’s
one-eyed Frank McGee scored
a record total of 14 goals
in the latter game, including
eight tallies in just eight
minutes and 20 seconds.
Tagé Cho Hudän Interpretive Centre showcases
the past and present culture of the Northern
Tutchone with many fascinating exhibits and
guided tours based on our oral tradition.
The Dawson City Museum is housed in the
beautiful Old Territorial Administration Building
National Historic Site, one of the premier heritage
attractions in the Klondike. The exhibits provide
an in-depth look at Dawson’s social and mining
history, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nations, the
Gold Rush and the development of the Klondike.
Big Jonathan House the Selkirk First Nation cultural centre
in Pelly Crossing has a range of exhibits, interpretive
programming and locally made crafts for sale.
Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre (Long Time Ago House)
celebrates and shares the traditional and contemporary
experiences of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in.
The John Tizya Centre is located in Old Crow, the only Yukon
community north of the Arctic Circle. The facility has a new
exhibition area, with displays of the Vuntut Gwitchin’s culture,
the Porcupine Caribou herd, the landscape and oral history.
In the 195Os, tourists
who arrived in Dawson
City on steamships were
greeted by small groups
of locals dressed in
189Os costumes. The
Klondike Tourist Bureau,
as it came to be known,
wanted to give people
a sense that they were
entering a special place.
The appearances were
such a hit with the visitors
that the group expanded
its activities to include escorted
tours of the town
and the Klondike Gold
Fields. Dances were held
at the Palace Grand
Theatre, or the Nugget
Hall, as it was called.
Gambling tables were
set up and special play
money was “minted” to
keep visitors entertained.
The organization
continued to grow,
as did the number
of visitors to the
area. In the 1960s
it became officially
called the Klondike
Visitors Association,
and undertook a
number of projects
to promote Dawson
City as a great place
to spend a vacation.
The casino nights were
moved into the Arctic
Brotherhood Hall, now
known as Diamond
Tooth Gerties. The
casino was the first
in Canada, and continues
to be a major
attraction in Dawson,
a place where visitors
and locals alike
gather to try their luck,
www.dawsoncity.ca
enjoy a drink, and watch
Gertie and the Gold Rush
Girls perform nightly.
The KVA maintains
attractions and hosts
special events, such as
the Jack London Centre,
the Berton House, the
Yukon Gold Panning
Championships, the
Great International
Outhouse Race and a
free gold panning claim
on Bonanza Creek.
Through its activities,
the KVA injects over two
million dollars a year into
the community, and works
in partnership with many
organizations to promote
and preserve the history
of the Klondike, making
a visit to Dawson City an
unforgettable experience.
Like huge stone caterpillars,
the telltale dredge
tailings of the goldfields
testify to the corporate enterprise
that spawned the
mammoth dredges of the
Guggenheim’s Yukon Gold
Mining Co., and others.
These behemoths roamed
the creeks of the Klondike
until the early 1960s.
Dredge #4 on Bonanza
Creek, the largest wooden
hull dredge in North
America, typifies
this legacy.
Summertime
tours are available.
In this
centennial of
transportation,
the search goes
on with new
technologies as
a modern day
Dawson continues to seek
the treasure that triggered
one of the world’s great
gold rushes.
www.dawsoncity.ca
Mining in all its forms
remains the #1 industry
in the Yukon Territory.
Three Yukon sourdoughs
are generally credited
with “The Discovery”
in 1896 that launched
the great Klondike Gold
Rush! It all happened one
sunny afternoon in August
while George Carmack,
Dawson Charlie and
Skookum Jim were
walking along
Rabbit Creek, later
renamed Bonanza
Creek. Another
version of the discovery
has Mrs.
Carmack making
the find while doing
George’s washing.
Miners of those
days endured much
to “moile under the
midnight sun”. Tools
and equipment were
rudimentary, much of
it fashioned from local
timber. There were no
goods from “the outside”
so miners packed their
own.
Once out in the goldfields,
the choice was to
work on open cut or the
more popular method -
go underground… in the
winter!
Sinking a shaft through
the overburden to the
pay gravels, the miners
would dig, or drift,
along the paystreaks,
but first they had to
thaw the permafrost, a
laborious task accomplished
with wood fires.
Miner working an
1890s handmade sluice
box during the Great
Klondike Gold Rush!
Once the pay gravels
were lifted out of the
shafts with hand operated
hoists, they would
be stockpiled until
spring when melting
snows would provide
water for sluicing.
www.dawsoncity.ca
As better equipment
arrived with improved
transport into the territory,
mining methods changed.
In 1902 the use of steam
thawing largely replaced
thawing directly with wood
fires. Steam was piped
from surface boilers to
steam points which
were driven with
wooden mallets into
the working face.
The depletion of
high grade reserves
roughly coincided
with completion of
the White Pass Railway
from Skagway
to Whitehorse and
subsequent introduction
of heavy
machinery into the
mining districts.
Little underground
mining occurred after
1904 and the independent
miner virtually disappeared
from the major creeks in
1905 with the arrival of
the first bucket-line dredge.
Dredging the stream valley
floors and “hydraulicking”
the bench deposits would
be the principal means of
mining and the mainstay
of the Yukon economy
for many years to come.
This gold claim, No. 6
above Discovery on historic
Bonanza Creek, is
maintained by the Klondike
Visitors Association
for visitors to experience
the thrill of discovering
gold using original hand
mining tools such as
pick-axe, hand shovel
and gold pan.
This claim was first
staked by F. Ladouceur
in October, 1896, not
long after George
Carmack made his famous
discovery about a
half mile downstream.
Since then it has been
worked by a variety
of miners and mining
companies, including
Dredge No. 8 of the
Yukon Consolidated
Gold Company.
The KVA now owns the
claim and visitors are
welcome to pan for
free and keep any gold
that they find. Panning
www.dawsoncity.ca
is restricted to hand tools
only. Bring your own gold
pan or rent from several
locations in Dawson City.
The free claim is located
approximately 9 miles/
14 km up Bonanza Creek
Road. Turn off the Klondike
Highway and follow
Bonanza Creek Road past
Dredge No. 4 and the
historic Discovery Claim.
This community is situated at the confluence of the Nordenskiold and Yukon Rivers, approximately
180 km north of Whitehorse and 360 km south of Dawson City on the North Klondike
Highway. The Campbell Highway also intersects the community and carries on to Faro, Ross
River and Watson Lake, providing a gateway to the Canol Road and some of the Yukon’s most
spectacular scenery.
The community is comprised of the Village of Carmacks and the Little Salmon/Carmacks First
Nation and was named after George Washington Carmack who found coal near Tantalus Butte
(locally called Coal Mine Hill) in 1893. Carmack built a trading post and traded with locals near
the present site of Carmacks and also started a coal mine on the south bank of the
Yukon River. George Carmack soon went on to discover gold in the Dawson region
with Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie a few years later, starting the Klondike Gold
Rush. Be sure to follow the boardwalk to the Roadhouse and Hazel Brown’s cabin.
Highway Highway Wildlife Wildlife
North North Klondike Klondike
Viewing Viewing
Shallow Bay, Lake Laberge, km 209 (mi. 130)
In late April and May, this is one of the best sites for
waterfowl viewing. Tundra and Trumpeter swans
stage here by the thousands in spring and fall. It is
also a hot spot for migrating shorebirds and
songbirds. Watch for birds of prey like Short-eared
Owls and Northern Harriers that hunt in the open
fields surrounding the bay.
Lake Laberge Campground, km 224.6 (mi. 139)
Made famous by the Robert Service poem, “The
Cremation of Sam McGee,” this is the only place in
Yukon where Double-crested Cormorants can be reliably
seen. Loons and other open water birds are common.
Fox Lake, km 239 (mi. 148)
Waterfowl stop here on their spring migration.
Muskrats come to feed on the abundant aquatic
vegetation and many muskrat push-ups can be seen
dotting the frozen surface of the lake in winter and
spring. You may be scolded by a Lesser Yellowlegs if
you venture too close to its nest or its offspring.
Fox Lake Burn, km 271.9 (mi. 167)
Follow the 200 m (650 ft.) interpreted trail to the
overlook and experience the importance of fire to the
boreal forest ecosystem.
Elk and Bear Viewing, km 273-340 (mi. 171-212)
About 100 elk — a protected species in the Yukon —
live in this area. The best time to see them is in winter
and spring, when there are no leaves on the trees. Listen
for elk bugling in late summer and autumn. Drive slowly
and look on the exposed south-facing slopes for their
distinctive cream-coloured rumps. Grizzly bears are
also commonly seen here in spring and summer, feeding
on the roadside vegetation and, sometimes, on the elk.
Nordenskiold River, km 320 (mi. 199)
Waterfowl stage here during spring and fall migrations
and nest in the more isolated areas of the river. Watch
for breeding Trumpeter Swans, Green-winged Teal,
Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Ducks. Beaver, muskrat and
moose feast on the lush vegetation while mink and red
fox hunt along the edges of the wetland. Listen for Soras
and Red-winged Blackbirds singing in the sedges.
Five Finger Rapids, km 380 (mi. 237)
The south-facing slope is a perfect habitat for prairie
crocus, kinnikinnick, common juniper and sage, and is
home to White-crowned and American Tree sparrows.
Tatchun/Frenchman Road, km 383.4 (mi. 240)
The road is 46.2 km (28 mi.) long and offers some of
the best chances to view mule deer.
Lhútsäw Wetlands, km 442 (mi. 276)
An important wetland complex for duck staging,
nesting and moulting.
Tthi Ndu Mun Lake, km 449 (mi. 281)
Water lilies and other seldom-seen aquatic wildflowers
bloom in the shallow areas of the lake. American
Coots, rarely seen in Yukon, along with geese and
ducks, nest here. Sandhill Cranes are often seen flying
overhead in spring and fall.
Meadow Lake, km 458 (mi. 286)
Home to salt-loving plants known as “halophytes.”
Look for chicken-like American Coots. This is their most
northerly known nesting site. Large numbers of Horned
Grebes make Meadow Lake their home in summer.
Ethel Lake Campground, km 523.6 (mi. 327)
The lake provides fishing opportunities for Lake Trout
and Northern Pike. This is a rich area for moose.
Moose Creek Campground, km 559.3 (mi. 350)
Listen for floodplain willow residents such as the
Northern Waterthrush, Wilson’s Warbler and
Common Yellowthroat.
Gravel Lake, km 622 (mi. 389)
Waterfowl nest here in early summer, joined by rafts
of ducks in late summer. Because of its location on the
trench, unusual birds are sometimes seen here,
including Ruddy Duck and Black Scoter. Sharp-tailed
Grouse are commonly seen in the open aspen
woodlands.
Tintina Trench viewpoint, km 655 (mi. 409)
The Tintina Trench is the largest geological fault in
North America, and is one of two major travel
corridors for migratory birds in the Yukon.
Fishing the North Klondike
Fishing the North Klondike
Chinook Salmon
Here in the Yukon, feisty northern species like Arctic grayling, northern
pike and lake trout crowd the eddies and outflows of our streams and
abound in our pristine lakes. Salmon make their way thousands of
kilometres from the oceans to their spawning beds, arriving in the
Arctic Grayling
Yukon and Klondike Rivers late in the summer. And for the warmer
types among us, there’s always ice fishing in one of the world's most
extraordinary landscapes – Yukon winter.
Burbot
Whenever and wherever you choose to fish, recreational fishing is
about spending time with friends, family and the great outdoors.
The North Klondike Highway offers numerous lakes, rivers and creeks
Inconnu
for fishing enjoyment, most within easy access of the highway.
Beginning at Lake Laberge and Fox Lake you can fish for northern
pike, lake trout and Arctic grayling at all the stream crossings.
Pike will take medium to large spoons and spinners, but also flies, plugs
Lake Trout
and other topwater lures. Lake trout is very popular and so closely
managed. Early and late in the season they can be found in shallow
water, but in July lake trout go deep. Switch to jigs or trolling with
weights. Please let the big ones go as they are responsible for most of Lake Whitefish
the new fish stocks each year.
Smaller lakes such as Little Fox, Little Braeburn, Braeburn, and Twin
offer anglers the chance to catch lake trout on small, calm lakes. Off
Northern Pike
the highway,Tatchun and Ethel Lakes offer up more opportunities to
drop a line, and maybe see a moose or other foraging wildlife.
There are several stocked lakes in the North Klondike region:
Gloria I and II,Wrong, and Haldane, offering the opportunity Rainbow Trout
to catch rainbow trout too. Local fishers recommend powerbait. Pick up a Guide
to Stocked Lakes at Visitor Information Centres or Environment Yukon offices.
Up the Dempster Highway, there are Arctic grayling in just about every
creek and river. These classic Yukon fish with the colourful oversized
dorsal fin make great eating. Small spinners and spoons are commonly
used, and flies work too.
Yukon has adopted progressive conservation strategies to ensure that
our fish stocks remain healthy and productive. Fishing practices are
guided by three First Nations’ principles: respect the animal, take
only what you need, and use everything you take.Visiting anglers are
encouraged to adhere to these principles and to carefully practice
catch and release fishing whenever possible. Barbless hooks,
gentle handling and live release in moderation are preferred.
Fishing licenses and regulations are available at most highway
lodges, gas stations and community stores. Please review the
regulations closely as daily catch and possession limits vary,
and some waters are restricted to barbless hooks only. You
can also hire guides who can share their local knowledge
and passion for the sport.
treats. Mike and Lou Busby, who built the business, now 10
years old, came to the area over 30 years ago to mine for gold on a
remote creek and later purchased and mined the claims where the
Gold Camp is located. They are a wealth of information about local
history and give a fantastic tour of the Pedro Dredge, a National Historic
Site. They can direct you to local hiking trails or provide you
with a kayak to float the river. Their latest “true Alaska adventure”
is recreational mining; you can stake a mini-claim and keep the gold you find. Many guests have
found an ounce or more; the two largest nuggets weigh over an ounce each. Lou’s café in the Outpost
is widely known for its fresh baked scones, hearty homemade soups, fabulous grilled Italian
sandwiches, ice cream, delicious espresso, microbrewery beer and wine. The Outpost also houses
“one of Alaska’s finest gift shops”, featuring Native-made items from around the state. Other attractions:
showers, FREE firewood and WiFi, fire rings and tables at all sites. Alaska hospitality at its
best! Conveniently located on Airport Road; central, easy parking for buses, caravans and big rigs.
The Dempster Highway can be a challenge
for some people, but for most visitors it’s the
thrill of a lifetime. It’s home to Dall’s sheep,
mountain goats, moose, woodland and barren
ground caribou, wolves, wolverines, lynx, fox,
along with grizzly and black bears, as well as
several hundred species of birds-both resident
and migratory. The sun shines 24 hours a day
there in the summertime. The land around Eagle
Plains is a rolling, hilly region that’s covered with
stunted black spruce forest. Because of permafrost
under the soil, the trees lean in all directions,
giving them a comical, drunken appearance.
The explosion of colourful Arctic flowers in July
can take your breath away. Dramatic views are
everywhere, and from just about anywhere you
can see forever. The Dempster Highway is still
one of the best-kept secrets of the Yukon.
64
"…a road is, after all, an extension to the Arctic of
an idea developed by a society elsewhere, made
for vehicles designed and constructed for social
conditions typical of other climates and places."
Byron Nupp, Arctic Institute of North America
Symposium, 1969.
Completed in 1979, the Dempster is the only
highway in Canada that crosses the Arctic Circle
and affords the traveller a rare chance to see vast
expanses of beautiful arctic tundra and striking
mountain ranges. Access to such remarkably
untouched scenery has never been easier!
The Dempster Highway connects Dawson
City with the communities of Tsiigehtchic,
Fort McPherson and Inuvik in the Northwest
Territories. Inuvik is set in the midst of the huge
Mackenzie River Delta which empties into
the Arctic Ocean and from here visitors can
travel by boat or plane to other communities
in the Western Arctic region including Aklavik,
Paulatuk, Tuktoyaktuk and Sachs Harbour.
Breathtaking scenery and northern wildlife make
a trip up the Dempster Highway an experience
of a lifetime. The incredible variety of terrain,
flora and fauna makes this drive one of the most
unique in North America. Its increasing popularity
is a testimony to the beauty of the countryside
through which the Dempster runs. There are many
points of interest, the highlight of which is at km
403 where the Dempster crosses the Arctic Circle.
The highway is open year-round except for short
periods during spring thaw and fall freeze-up.
Ferries at the Peel and Mackenzie rivers will take
you across free of charge from June to October.
In winter, ice bridges allow traffic to cross.
Well-maintained campsites and roadside
services are strategically placed along the length
of this 747 km (450 mile) gravel highway. At km
371 (mile 231), the Eagle Plains Hotel provides
food, accommodation and a service station to
travellers. The communities of Fort McPherson
and Arctic Red River also offer a number of
essential services.
Take the time to visit the Western Arctic Visitors’
Information Centre located in the British Yukon
Navigation Building on Front Street in Dawson
City. The centre can provide valuable information
about the sights and attractions along the
highway and in the Western Arctic region. Road
condition reports are also available and it is
prudent to check these before departing Dawson
City. Look for the polar bear marking the location
of the Western Arctic Information Centre on the
