RASCHIG SUPER-RINGProven in Practice and FRI testedThe world-renowned and recognized FractionationResearch, Inc. (FRI) in the USA is an association of thebest-known companies in the field of petrochemistry, thechemical industry, plant and apparatus engineering andmanufacturers of equipment parts. FRI currently operatesthe world’s largest test facility for testing mass transfertrays and packings for rectification processes in thevacuum, normal-pressure and high-pressure range.

RASCHIG SUPER-RINGProven in Practice and FRI testedThe revolutionary idea behind the design of the RaschigSuper-Ring has now also led to exceptionally good masstransfer efficiencies, pressure drops and loadingcapacities in the FRI test facility. The structure of theRaschig Super-Ring is the first to pursue the objective ofproducing turbulent film-type flows and to preventformation of drops. The large number of alternating waveswings also achieves large turbulences in the gas andliquid flows while at the same time it has an extremelyopen geometry.Owing to the fluidically optimized shape of the RaschigSuper-Ring, the randomly dumped packed bedautomatically obtains a structure otherwise found only inthe case of structured packings.1

RASCHIG SUPER-RINGProven in Practice and FRI testedFig. 1 provides information on the measured mass transfer efficiencies of theRaschig Super-Ring for the cyclohexane/n-heptane system at 1.65 bar and forisobutane/n-butane at 6.8 bar and 11.4 bar. The mass transfer efficiency of theRaschig Super-Ring is therefore not only better than the previous modern packingsbut also more favorable than that of structured packings with a comparable surfacearea. (Further information on request). Due to the malfunction of the distributor themass transfer efficiency drops already previously which is mentioned in the figureas "unstable test conditions".HETP, inchesHETP, inchesRaschig-Super Ring No. 2 EfficiencyC6/C7 System, 24 psia (1.65 bar), F.R.I. RASCHIG SUPER-RINGProven in Practice and FRI testedFig. 3 shows the pressure drop per theoretical stage. Here the advantageof using our Raschig Super-Ring in mass transfer columns becomesespecially clear. Despite an extremely low pressure drop, the largeturbulence of the gas and liquid flow together with the especially goodsurface wetting causes an excellent mass transfer rate. The pressure dropper theoretical stage of the Raschig Super-Ring is therefore far below thatof Pall rings and other modern packings.Pressure Drop/stage, inch H2ORaschig Super-Ring No. 2 Pressure Drop per StageC6/C7 System, 24 psia (1.65 bar), F.R.I. RASCHIG SUPER-RINGProven in Practice and FRI testedTab. 1 gives a brief summary of the previous applications of our RaschigSuper-Ring. The exceptionally good chemical engineering data wereconfirmed both in rectification and in absorption and desorption columns.Numerous mass transfer processes are operated with extreme dumpingheights (up to 11 m) without liquid redistributors. These dumping heightscan be achieved since the liquid and gas phases are distributed extremelyevenly over the column cross section due to the optimal packinggeometry, thus preventing mass transfer losses along the mass transfercolumn.Tab.1:Extraction of applications for RASCHIG SUPER-RINGNatural gas plantMethionine plantCaprolactam plantRefineryFatty acid plantEffluent gas plantAmmonia plantEthanol plantFormaldehyde plantMethanol plantButadiene plantN-Methylpyrrolidone plantSynthesis gas plantEffluent water treatmentEthylene plantHydrogen sulfide plantPhenol plantTDI plant5
