In the two most recent thefts, lastmonth and overnight on Wednesday, the doors toan outside toolbox, were forced open and children’splay tools taken.Supervisor Michelle Tregoweth says this provesthere is no honour among thieves.“It’s really heart wrenching to come in hereand find we’ve been burgled. It’s like a kick inthe stomach every time and what are we doingto deserve this? We’re only here for the benefit ofthe children and this is how we get treated – withno respect.”Te Kuiti Playcentre is a parent-run co-operativewith up to 15 pre-schoolers attending five morningsessions a week. Not only are the recent break-insfrustrating parents and costing the playcentremoney, Mrs Tregoweth says they are also impactingon the kids.“The children are becoming aware of the burglariesand it’s really hard to explain to them why ithas happened. They ask ‘where are the hammers’and ‘where is the camera’ and all we can say issomeone took them. Then they’ll reply ‘but it’s ours’and we just have to say ‘it’s gone now’.”She says part of the problem is that the playcentreis set back from the road and open for communityuse at all times so, when people are seeninside the grounds after-hours they wouldn’t beconsidered suspicious.“We may be an easy target but why steal froma playcentre? And to make matters worse, ourfundraising money is now being spent on replacinglocks and stolen items and not the children.“It’s disgraceful. Just leave us alone.”She is urging neighbouring residents to “please”keep an eye on the playcentre and report any suspiciousbehaviour.Te Kuiti Police Sergeant Craig Lindstrom saysthe ongoing break-ins are having a “devastating”effect on the children.HAMMER BLOW: Te Kuiti Playcentre supervisor Michelle Tregoweth (above) is “disgusted” at the break-ins and which have left pre-schoolers SophieParkes (below left) and Harmony Sanderson sharing play tools following a third burglary at the pre-school since May.“It’s disappointingthat people havebreached the trust ofthe playcentre volunteersby taking an opportunityto removesome items,” he says.“The incidents haveput a financial burdenback onto the playcentrecommittee and Iwould like to remindthe community that ifthey see any suspiciousactivity on the schoolgrounds to contact policeimmediately.”Any information canbe provided anonymouslyto Te Kuiti Police on07 878 1450 or CrimeStoppers 0800 555 111.Super Savings!Loose Ecuadorian BananasFresh Tegel NZ SkinlessPremium Chicken ThighCutletsSunrise Table Spread 500gCadbury Chocolate Blocks210-220g/Treat Size BarRange 10-20 Pack(Excludes Bubbly/Mousse)Coke/Sprite/Fanta/Lift/L&PRange1.5LBluebird Original ChipsRange 150gsvwainewss1009$1 99kg$8 99kg$1 99$2 79eachSpecials available from Tuesday 10th September until Sunday 15th September 2013 or while stocks last.95 Rora Street, Te Kuiti. As part of the local police’sannual Blue Light trip to the Auckland adventure park, constables Leesa Brookes, Brenton Irwin and Ngahuia Sheedy took three busloads of children northon August 24 – many for the first time. The children from Piopio, Te Kuiti and Otorohanga rode the famous Corkscrew Rollercoaster, Log Flume and Dodgemthrill rides for hours during a day Ms Brookes called “amazing”. “The weather was perfect and the children really enjoyed themselves. We just let them gofor their lives and they were knackered by the end. But they had so much fun that they talked about it all the way home.” Although the children pay their wayon the trip ($60ea), the police ran a free sausage sizzle and drinks stall. Waitomo News Tuesday, September 10, 2013 5On the roadto recoveryA MAJOR stroke landed Te Kuitiman David Easton in Waikato Hospitalin April.Thinking he was napping, but unableto wake him, his wife Marjorycalled St John Ambulance and DrCaitlin Gill had him taken straightto Hamilton. It was 90-year-old Mr Easton’s secondstroke this year, and it knockedhim for six. After 11 days he was transferredback to Te Kuiti Hospital and withsome determination, despite havinglost his full sense of balance, waseventually up on his feet and showeringwith assistance.Four days later, despite remainingpartially dependent, he was keen toget back to his home. And that’s when he was referredto registered nurse Carol Marshall ofWaikato District Health Board’s newSupported Transfer and AcceleratedRehabilitation Team – START.Registered nurses Ms Marshall andAnnie Lutze cover the North KingCountry working with patients likeMr Easton and their families in theirhomes to help them achieve theirrecovery goals.“In David’s case that meant enhancingthe support services providedby Access home-based healthcarewith a long-term plan, daily exercisesand weekly visits to assess hisprogress and tweek the plan,” saysMs Marshall.Mrs Lutze says without STARTMr Easton would have spent longerin hospital and his recovery wouldn’thave been so rapid.“We looked at his long-term goalwhich was getting home to Marjoryand being able to walk without aframe. We broke that down to personalcare steps such as help withshowering, improving his strengthand balance to reduce the likelihoodof falls, and building his confidenceabout taking his medication.”The START service is flexible, depending on the support patientsrequire. It aims to keep people aged 65years and over in their own homes, and out of hospitals and residentialcare facilities, helping reduce pressureon already stretched hospitalservices.FRESH START: Ninety-year-old Te Kuiti stroke patients Marjory (left) and David Easton are both at home and mobile withthe support of registered nurses Annie Lutze (left rear) and Carol Marshall from Waikato District Health Board’s new SupportedTransfer and Accelerated Rehabilitation Team – START.START provides appropriate seven day supportfor up to six weeks of intensive home rehabilitationfor the elderly, stroke and rehabilitation clients. The therapy involves medical, allied health andcommunity professionals such as health care assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, registered nurses and social workers plus appropriatecultural assistance. It is based on a UK model, with Waikato the firstDHB to run the project in New Zealand. After a “shaky start” when he first came homeMr Easton has now regained his balance andconfidence. He is very grateful to Mrs Lutze whom hewarmly regards as “one of the family” because ofher constant and supportive care, and is convincedhe has recovered more quickly within the comfortof his own home.“I wouldn’t be doing that if I was still in hospitalfeeling sorry for myself.”Mr Easton had barely completed his six weeksof START care when his wife also 90, suffered astroke in July. After a period in hospital, she toowas able to return home supported by Ms Marshalland Mrs Lutze.“I’ve been very grateful for the wonderful backupwe’ve received,” says Mrs Easton.“It has been a huge help to both of us. It’s good toknow these people are in the background – we canring them if we’re worried about anything.”Mrs Lutze says the key is taking whatever abilitythe patient has and working with them to improvethat so they become more and more independentwithin the six week timeframe.“It’s all about getting them past where they werethe day before.”
