Had Ypres fallen, the Germanscould have reached the channel ports in Northern France. Here, there was little let up in the fighting and as a result, this beautiful citywas completely destroyed. Aneducational pack, study resources and education room are available.Sanctuary Wood Museum & Hill 62Located close to the original front lines, this fascinating visit shows wellpreserved original British trenches and covered passageways, as well asa section of the underground tunnel system. The museum consists of tworooms housing many artefacts removed from the battlefields plus a largeand rare collection of three dimensional photo images inside special viewingboxes. The Sanctuary Wood is privately owned by the grandson of the farmerwho reclaimed his land in 1919 when the local people returned to Ypres.Passchendaele Memorial MuseumCommemorating the 1917 Battle of Passchendale, this museum has beenenlarged in 2013, with a new underground exhibition focusing on the battle,a network of open air trenches and a new remembrance gallery.
