We want youto enjoy your journey with us, but more importantly, we want to help you to achieve yourultimate goals - to be successful and to graduate. Please read and enjoy the updatedinformation by department heads and staff members.Terry Hazzard, Ed.D.Dean of <strong>Student</strong>sLike other colleges, Bishop StateCommunity College is faced withthe threat of cutbacks and prorations.During these times, the collegefamily makes special efforts toenhance recruitment strategies toincrease enrollment, in addition to the recruitment activities scheduled by our enrollmentmanager, counselors, faculty members, and staff, including President James Lowe, all ofwhom have played an active part in the process.In the summer of <strong>2011</strong>, President Lowe mailed approximately 8,400 recruitment lettersto high school graduates, encouraging them to choose Bishop State Community Collegeas their college of choice. Coordinated by the Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s, this exciting recruitmenttool allowed prospective students and parents living in Mobile County and WashingtonCounty areas to receive firsthand invitations to visit our college community.


CAMPUS POLICEFor your safety, our Main Campus andBaker-Gaines Central Campus haveinstalled a new camera system that willprovide campus police a real-time view ofthe campuses. The system is constantlymonitored by campus officers from severallocations, and it has the capabilityto store information for future viewing.While violations are minimal on all fourcampuses, the system is instrumental insolving questionable crime-related incidents.HIGHLIGHTS FROMTHE CARVERCAMPUSThe Carver Campus had one of its mostexciting school terms ever, graduatinglarge numbers of students from its weldingprogram. Recently hired welding instructorshave provided much depth tothis program, accompanying work forceneeds throughout Mobile. More than 500prospective students toured the campusduring the 2010-<strong>2011</strong> Academic Year.<strong>Student</strong>s came to visit the new CulinaryArts Department and other areas of thecollege.The Annual Honors Day Convocation was held April 26 in the Yvonne Kennedy Auditoriumat Baker-Gaines Central Campus. Several students were recognized for theirachievements in academic and extracurricular activities, as well as other acknowledgements.For the first time, faculty and staff members who earned doctoral and master degreeswere recognized and presented with medallions for their achievement. Also, the name ofthe convocation was changed to the Dr. Keflyn X. Reed Annual Honors Day Convocationin honor of Dr. Keflyn X. Reed, who dedicated a long term of service to the college asprogram coordinator. Dr. Terry Hazzard, Dean of <strong>Student</strong>s, accepted the role as ProgramCoordinator, effective Spring Semester <strong>2011</strong>. To achieve eligibilityfor Phi Theta Kappa, a student mustcomplete at least 12 hours of associate’sdegree course work and earn a cumulativegrade point average (GPA) of 3.25 orhigher. College-wide Geton BoardMrs. Yvonne Foster and other counselorsand dedicated members of the BishopState family hosted the first college-wide“Get On Board” at Baker-Gaines CentralCampus on October 7. <strong>Student</strong> clubsand organizations were present, andgood food and music were enjoyed byeveryone.BLOOD DRIVEThe annual blood drive was heldOctober 11 on Main Campus. We continueto encourage the Bishop State familyto help save lives by giving blood. Twenty-threepints of blood were collected byLifeSouth Community Blood Center thisyear. With LifeSouth, the blood collectedin the community stays in the community!STATEWIDE HIV/STDPROJECTBishop State Community College joinedforces with the Mobile County Health Departmentin the fight against HIV/STDs.Bishop State is among several collegesthroughout the state participating in astudy that is dedicated to significantly decreaseor completely diminish the numberof reported cases.Eighty-five students were tested on theMain Campus, 17 students on the Baker-GainesCentral Campus, 47 on theCarver Campus and 53 on the SouthwestCampus, reaching our goal of testingmore than 200 students during the 2010-<strong>2011</strong> Academic Year.Kendra Cage, Derricka Smith, and Kinisha Lott (l-R)The week of February 20 – 24 was Homecoming. From Gospelfest, Green and Gold Day,the Fashion Show, Homecoming Election, College Transfer Day, Talent Show, Black HistoryObservance to the Annual Smack Down, Block Party, and Pep Rally, the college wason an exciting roll. The culmination of all these activities included Homecoming gamesbetween Bishop State and Enterprise-Ozark Community College. The half-time of themen’s game featured the announcement and presentation of the Homecoming Court.They were: Miss Varsity, Lynda Klyce • 2nd Attendant, Kendra Cage • 1st Attendant,Kinisha Lott, and Miss Homecoming <strong>2011</strong>, Derricka Smith.Keep your ears open as we will soon announce the date of the Mr. and Miss Bishop StateCommunity College Pageant.PRESIDENT’SOUTSTANDINGSTUDENT AWARDEffective Spring Semester <strong>2011</strong>, the JamesBrowning Allen Outstanding <strong>Student</strong> Award,formerly named after the late Senator JamesB. Allen, was changed to The President’sOutstanding <strong>Student</strong> Award. This award ispresented annually to the member of thegraduating class who meets the criteria of awell-rounded college student, as determinedby the selection committee.The award recipient from the <strong>2011</strong> graduatingclass was Crystal Gable. Miss Gablecompleted her studies in Civil EngineeringTechnology at the Southwest Campus. OPEN HOUSEOpen House, held July 12, was a majorrecruitment activity. The counseling staffin the Division of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Development</strong><strong>Services</strong> scheduled media announcementsand mailed invitations to residentsthroughout the city, inviting them to sharein the Bishop State experience. Also,participants were able to learn about programand course offerings, financial aidand much more. Soon it will be time for highschool graduating seniors to attend college for the first time. In addition to being excited,a first day in college can cause butterflies in one’s stomach. <strong>Student</strong>s will be leavingfamiliar surroundings of high school and embarking on a new journey with new teachers,new classrooms and new faces. To help overcome these fears, we encourage you to getinvolved in campus life.Getting involved in student activities on campus will also give you the opportunity to meetnew people. Being part of a student group will give you something for you to look forwardto outside of class, work and homework, while helping you expand yourleadership potential.The <strong>Student</strong> Government Association (SGA) is a great way for you to become involved.Our SGA is a diverse and committed group of students elected to be the voice of thestudent body, with the purpose of enriching students’ social lives and broadening culturaland on-campus community experiences. SGA promotes student involvement and seeksto improve the general student welfare. SGA elections are held twice a year and are opento both freshman and sophomores who meet requirements.SGA is always looking for enthusiastic students with new ideas. This group of student leaders was taughtby Miss Andrea Yohn, a Ph.D. intern at the University of South Alabama. Together theylearned a number of leadership strategies to boost their confidence and to complimenttheir leadership styles. This group of students is instrumental in recruitment activities, inaddition to other campus-related events.GREEN-KNIGHT TECHNICALAWARD OF EXCELLENCEEach year during the graduation exercise, The Green-Knight Technical Award of Excellence is presented toan outstanding student from the technical school of thecollege. This award is named after Mr. Arthur Green,first chief administrator of Carver State Technical College,now the Carver Campus of Bishop State CommunityCollege, and Mr. Clay Knight, the first president ofSouthwest State Technical College, now the SouthwestCampus of Bishop State Community College. The award recipient from the <strong>2011</strong> graduatingclass was Mrs. Crystal Dees. Mrs. Dees completed her studies in Electronics EngineeringTechnology. Odom, daughter of Mr. MaynardOdom and Dr. Roxanne Odom, graduated fromTuskegee University in the Class of <strong>2011</strong>. She receiveda Doctorate of Philosophy with concentrationin Integrative Biosciences.Brittany Perry, daughter of Mr. ChristopherPerry and Dr. Victoria Perry, completed herstudies at Auburn University in the Class of <strong>2011</strong>.
