The seeding device will be changedfrom pyrotechnics to an acetone-silver iodide-amnmonium iodide jet burner developedat China Lake.The project design will be changed from randomizing on individual bands torandomizing on 48 h'-.Ir time blocks. With the new system, all convective bandswithin a predetermined 48 hour period will either be seeded or not seeded basedon one decision. This change will do two things. First, it will enable us totreat all the convective bands within a given storm in the same manner and thereforebe able to detect frontal scale changes that may occur when all bands inthe frontal zone are treated. Secondly, the 48-hour randomization will enableus to test the effect of seeding on one additional parameter - total storm precipitation,including in band and between band effects.The Santa Barbara Project will have available improved radar coverage witha M-33 and TPS-1D radars which will enable us to detect changes in echo characteristics,cell movement and cloud tops. The addition of a mini-lab on boardthe seeding aircraft will provide in cloud measurements in the upwind area andimmediately after seeding in the primary area.-43-
