ِأJoint MaddThe Rule:If the letter of natural madd ي , , is followed by a hamza in thesame word, then you should prolong the sound of the madd letter to 4or 5 haraka. This is called madd muttasil or joint madd and it iscompulsory to prolong it. The sign of madd will be written above theletter of madd in the Quran text as in:وھَنِيٓ‏ َٔ ا ‏ِء–‏ ‏ٓو سُ‏ سَآئِ‏ ‏ٌل–‏يَتَسَآ‏ ءَلُو ‏َن جَآ‏ ‏َء ۡ ٱل مَلَٰٓٮٕ‏ كَ‏ ‏ُة ٱلسَّآ‏ ٮٕ‏ِ ‏َلمَآ‏ ‏ًء جَآ‏ ۡ ءَتہُ‏ ‏ُم شَآ‏ ‏َء عَآ‏ ٮٕ‏ ‏ِالً‏جَزَ‏ آ‏ ‏ًء جِاْ‏ ‏ٓى ‏َء يُرَ‏ آ‏ ‏ُء و ‏َن حُنَفَآ‏ ‏َءِ ‏َق حَ‏ دَآ‏ ٮٕ‏ جَآ‏ ءَ‏ ‏ُه ٱلشِّتَآ‏ ‏ِء غُثَآ‏ ‏ًءِ ‏ُرٱلسَّرَ‏ آ‏ ٮٕ‏ جَآ‏ ءَ‏ ‏ِت أھوَآ ءكم ھَنِ‏ ‏ٓي َٔاسُ ‏ٓو ‏َء ٱألَرَ‏ آ‏ ٮٕ‏ سِ‏ ‏ٓي َٔ‏ ‏ۡت يَشَآ‏ ‏َءِ ‏ِك

3. Separated Madd lRule:If the letter of madd comes at the end of the word and is followed by aword that starts with hamza, then this is called madd munfaisl(separated). It is called separated madd because it occurs in 2 separatewords. The madd letter comes at the end of a word and the hamzacomes at the beginning of the following word. The separated madd isalso called permissible madd because it is your choice to prolong it for 2,4 or 5 haraka.
