Introducti<strong>on</strong>• Occupati<strong>on</strong>al health and safety is a crossdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary area c<strong>on</strong>cerned with protect<strong>in</strong>g thesafety, health and welfare of people engaged <strong>in</strong>work or employment.• Due to the globalizati<strong>on</strong> of trade, severalorganizati<strong>on</strong>s are now <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>:◦ m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g unfair labor practices◦ envir<strong>on</strong>mental health and◦ safety c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries• Pakistan has jo<strong>in</strong>ed the World TradeOrganizati<strong>on</strong> (WTO).3


Introducti<strong>on</strong>• Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the WTO requirements, foreign<strong>in</strong>vestors require compliance of the local<strong>in</strong>dustry with <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al standards i.e. ISO• In 2001, the government announced a LaborPolicy Initiative and proposed to create aNati<strong>on</strong>al Occupati<strong>on</strong>al Safety and HealthCouncil (NOSHC)• Due to this negligence, the local <strong>in</strong>dustry couldcost the country billi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al trade.4

• To look at the <strong>OHS</strong> practices <strong>in</strong> Pakistan’ssteel re-roll<strong>in</strong>g mill• To compare the local steel re-roll<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>dustry processes with <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al<strong>in</strong>dustry processes• To raise the <strong>OHS</strong> awareness <strong>in</strong> the case<strong>in</strong>dustry studied6

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Case</str<strong>on</strong>g> study of Ittehad <strong>Steel</strong><strong>Mill</strong>• In 1978, they had started a steel manufactur<strong>in</strong>gfacility <strong>in</strong> <strong>Islamabad</strong>• The Ittehad Group is a privately-held, diversifiedPakistani C<strong>on</strong>glomerate with <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>: steel,real-estate, logistics, automobiles, hospitality andgeneral trad<strong>in</strong>g• Largest Pakistani exporters of re-bars toAfghanistan and employ<strong>in</strong>g over 450 people• Group Turnover <strong>in</strong> 2007-2008 of over PkRs. 2billi<strong>on</strong>15
