question & answerNaturopath's Adviceu Dr. D. SathyanathNature Cure PhysicianI had coronary artery bypass grafting in May,2011. I am having Insulin & allopathic medicinessuggested after Bypass surgery. My HDL is low,CHOL/HDL ratio is also low, fasting Sugar is highand PP blood sugar is 260 mg/dl. Pleasesuggest remedial measures.Indra Kumar, KolkataWhether you are a Diabetic since many months/years or suggested to have insulin only afterthe surgery, makes difference in the line oftreatment. Yet I assume that you havedeveloped Hyperglycemia, i.e., raised bloodsugar level after surgery, i.e., Stresshyperglycemia (also called stress diabetes ordiabetes of injury) which is a transient elevationof the blood glucose due to the stress of illness.Normally any situation that is viewed in anemotional context (happy or sad) may provokethe release of a good array of hormones whichin turn cause raised blood sugar level .Similarlyit happens while at repair of the body aftersurgery. It usually resolves spontaneously. Butin some people, stress hyperglycemia mayindicate a reduced insulin secretory capacityor a reduced sensitivity. Similar could be yours.TreatmentDietBy now you might be aware of the Dietrestrictions with regard to Diabetes, yet in a nutshell, the carbohydrate rich foods likeunderground tubers viz, potato, cassava, yam, sweet potato have to be avoided. In generaluse of underground vegetables has to berestricted. Based on the digestive capacity, themillets like jowar, bajra, ragi etc. can be madeas the staple food instead of rice and wheat asthe proportion of proteins are considerablymore and carbohydrates are less compared tothat of rice and wheat. Further their digestionis slow and glucose is released from theintestines very slowly into the blood, therebythe constant desire to eat will also become less.Sprouts and nuts can also be consumed. Theuse of fenugreek, barley, beans, amaranth andother leafy vegetables should be enhanced.Moderate consumption of papaya alone isrecommended.ExerciseHow much ever the diet restriction one mayhave, it is the right utilization of the glucose bythe skeletal muscles which maintains the sugarlevel within the limits. According to theendurance, any physical activity in the form ofYoga or walking should be performed regularly.Other therapiesMassage is recommended as it controls thestress hormones and permits the body to useinsulin more effectively. It is potential enoughto prevent the nerve oriented complications ofDiabetes. The use of cold or alternate hip bathscan also improve the condition. The utilizationof the glucose can also be enhanced by the useof full wet sheet packs, immersion baths andwith an array of therapies implemented inNature Cure Hospitals.National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune 411 00110Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012

from the desk of publication officerA miracle of the world! The origin of life! Amultidimensional character, and an ocean of love! Justcelebrating a day for her? Oneday for the power whobecomes mother of numerouslives in a day. Feel injustice, dishonest, unfair!Everyday should beWomen’s Day. It is not aboutquoting any great women of the world. That is ofcourse, something great to remember any time. Wetalk about the woman, who is not known to be great. In a country like India, being a woman is enough tobe great. The sacrifices made throughout the lifemake the concept of equity, too weak. It is not aboutequity, it is about more than equity. Why was it needed, is the biggest question to beexplored. We all come across different rules and lawsabout Defence of women, against violence andwoman harassment. The rules keep coming in thepicture and events keep taking place in fact, with anincreasing tendency. The reason is no one actuallyrealises about the reason of the need to establish suchrules. We need such rules because there are problemswith woman at home, there are problems when theyare at work, there are problems when they try to stepinto something new, and there are problems whenthey try to use their very own rights. The real India isseen only in the rural and undeveloped parts of thecountry. Otherwise, it is difficult to realize the extentof seriousness of this issue. We make reservation policies for women in everyfield but our own society creates the practicaldifficulties for a woman to pursue the same thing. It isnot a subject to mention that women have excellentlyperformed in almost every area of work and field ofduties. However, in how many of those cases, theywere respected with complete devotion and support,as compared to the male counterpart? How manycases, we come across in which a man was victim ofBeing a Womanharassment and he foundhimself unable to survive? I donot say there would be none. Ofcourse, there are! However, thereis no matching between thefigures. This is not the status only inIndia but more or less even indeveloped countries, theproblem exists in one or theother form. There are cases indifferent countries, which amaze, how could it bedone? Moreover, the worst part is, it keeps increasingoverall, with the increasing provisions to avoid them.Gender discrimination existing in any form shouldbe a subject of removal at every level and itsconveyance to the next generation. Unfortunate buta point to note is, the women society itself is in apivotal role for such discrimination. We need to thinkbeyond this boundary and be honest to our ownexistence.Unawareness and hesitation about using thespecial provisions against such issues are the majorcauses of the repeated occurrence of violence cases. It becomes our moral responsibility to face and fight, not only for us but to fight against any wrong in thesociety. In addition to all this, the women society also hasvery important social responsibility of establishingand carrying the conducts of civilization in the society.Violation of which can definitely be one of thereasons, we are trying to find here.We will have to certainly find the reasons and actin a positive way to sort them out. It is the need oftime and part of development of our country. We justneed to contribute on our own level by beingthoughtful and responsible to our society but truthfuland honest to its existence.Namrata ShuklaManaging EditorNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 11

improving strengthin the coagulation cascade. The term'coagulation cascade,' refers to a series ofevents, each dependent on the other thatstops bleeding through clot formation.CalciumDr. Anand P. G.Calcium is one of the importantmineral in the human body required forseveral life processes. About 99 percent ofthe calcium is in the bones and teeth whereit contributes to their structure andhardness. Peak bone mass is achievedaround the age of thirty and higher it is, thestronger the bones. It begins to fall a fewyears later, accelerating in females aboutfive years after the menopause. A small butvital amount of calcium is present in blood, where it is essential for normal excitabilityof nerves and muscles. A fall in bloodcalcium causes tetany (spontaneouscontraction of muscles). Calcium is alsonecessary for optimal activity of a numberof proteins and enzymes. The binding ofcalcium ions is required for the activationof the 'vitamin K' dependent clotting factorsRegulation of calcium levelsCalcium concentrations in the blood andfluid that surrounds cells are tightlycontrolled in order to preserve normalphysiological functioning. When bloodcalcium decreases (eg: in the case ofinadequate calcium intake), calciumsensingproteins in the parathyroid glandssend signals resulting in the secretion ofparathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH stimulatesthe conversion of vitamin D to its activeform 'calcitriol' in the kidneys. Calcitriolincreases the absorption of calcium fromthe small intestine. Together with PTH,calcitriol stimulates the release of calciumfrom bone by activating osteoclasts (boneresorbing cells) and decreases the urinaryexcretion of calcium by increasing itsre-absorption in the kidneys. When bloodcalcium rises to normal levels, theparathyroid glands stop secreting PTH andthe kidneys begin to excrete any excesscalcium in the urine. Over theyears, yoga has been restrictedonly to the practice of Asanas andPranayama, but it is much more; ithas six other well-known limbs ofYama, Niyama, Pratyahara,Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.Besides these, hand Mudras arealso an important part of yoga. While practicing 'Dhayana' or'Meditation', we usually sit in 'GyanMudra' is well known to all yogaaspirants. Gyan Mudra increasesconcentration power and isuseful in many other ways. Thereare scores of other Mudras also forachieving personal developmentand for preventing and curingvarious diseases.Balance of BodyNaturopathy believes inusing the five basic elements ofNature, viz., Agni (Fire), Vayu(Air), Akash (Space), Prithvi(Earth) and Jala (Water) in curingall diseases. We are aware of thebenefits of sun-bath, steambath, hot and cold watertreatment and Mud/Mittithearpy in Naturopathy. TheMUDRAS make a more subtleuse of these five elements. Wehave got a visible (sthula) bodyand an invisible (sukshma)body. The Mudras make use ofthe invisible body in curingdiseases. According to thescience of Mudra therapy, thefive fingers of our handsrepresent the five basicelements of Nature. The thumbsignifies Agni (Fire), the indexfinger represents Vayu (Air), themiddle finger Akash (Space)while the ring and little fingersdenote Prithvi (Earth) and Jal(Water) respectively. Wholeuniverse is made up of these fiveelements existing in balanceand harmony. When thisbalance in disturbed in Nature,an ecological imbalance iscreated leading to earth quakes, tsunami, hurricanes, floods, drought etc. Similarly, in ourbody, these elements exist in abalance, if the balance isdisturbed we get diseased. Thatis the root cause of all ourdisease, i.e., an imbalancebetween these five elements.Let us first look at thefunctions of these fiveelements. The function of FIREis to give Heat and Energy tokeep the body warm and toprovide digestive fire fordigestion of food. It is related toSolar Plexus. The function of AIRelement is to provide movementand to provide oxygen to theNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 15

ody. It is related to heart and lungs. The function ofSPACE element is to create empty space (intracellular space) in the body, so as to allow the cellsand the tissues to carry out their work. It createssound and give us hearing power as well as affectsthe speech. The EARTH element provides stabilityand nutrition, strengthens bones and muscles. Earthprovides our food in the form of grains, fruits andvegetables and thereby provides strength andvitality through vitamins, minerals, carbohydratesand other nutrients. The WATER element gives usElements Function Physiological Effect Related OrganFire Provides heat, Temperature Solar plexusenergy and maintenance anddigestive fire DigestionAir Movement Blood oxygenation Heart & lungsSpace Create emptiness Creates Intra cellular Throat, Ear, Mindspaces and ImprovesSpeechEarth Stability and Bone & muscle growth MooladharaNutrition and Strength (Perineum)Water Maintains youth Maintains viscosity Sex organsSecretions andSuppleness to skinyouth; as water is the elixir of life. It provideselasticity to the muscles. Water is the maincomponent of blood. It helps the formation of bloodand thereby gives glow, suppleness to skin and it isrelated to all fluids in the body such as urine, semen, saliva etc. What happens when the balance between thesefive elements is disturbed? An increases in FIREelement will lend to increase of heat in body, rise intemperature burning in various parts of bodyincluding cancer, dry skin, urticaria, skin diseases likepsoriasis, herpes zoster, dry eczema, itching, highblood pressure, acidity/hyperacidity, headaches, etc. While a decrease in FIRE element wil lead to coldnessof body, loss of energy and vitality, weak digestionand the resultant diseases such as shivering, cold, asthma, sinusitis, low blood pressure, mentalimbalance and even impotency. Imbalance of AIRbalancing the bodyelement causes heart and lung disorders, bloodpressure problem, angina, blood disorders, physicalpains, deformation, depression loco- motor ataxia, arthritis, paralysis, flatus, eructation etc. Imbalanceof SPACE element creates thyroid disorders, throatproblem, speech disorders, epilepsy, madness, foolishness, mental and physical retardation, eardiseases, deafness, lose of hearing, ear dischargesetc.Imbalances of EARTH elements causes weakness, obesity, weight disorders, rise incholesterol level, bones ormuscular diseases, low bloodpressure, low haemoglobin level, etc. Imbalance of WATER elementcan lead to dehydration cold, cough, sinusitis, asthma, dropsy, pleurisy, swelling, blood thinningor blood thickening, bloodclotting, urination problems anddiseases of reproductive organsetc.Role of MudrasThrough these five fingers, wecan manipulate and balancethese five elements. Our finger tips containthousands of sensory nerve endings per squarecentimeters, which are directly related to brain andare carriers of Subtle Energy flows in the body, i.e.,Bio-Energy, Mechanical Energy, Chemical Energy,Spiritual Energy, Cosmic Energy etc. Anyimpediment in these energy flows or any unwantedexcess energy flow causes disease in Body, Mind andSpirit. The 'Mudras' function as a regulator of energychannels. According to the Science of Mudras, whenthe tip of any finger is joined with the tip of thumb, the particular element represented by that finger isenhanced or increased and after reaching anoptimum level, it creates a balance and synergy withthis element. Conversely, when a particular finger isfolded and pressed with the thumb, it decreases thatparticular element and creates a balance afterreaching an optimum.16Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012

The five elements are called “TATTAVA” in Sanskritand the five fingers represent these five Tattavas.Using each finger separately along with the thumb, eight Tattava Mudras are formed; four of type I ,whenever we join the tip of each finger with the tipof the thumb and Four of type II on folding eachfinger and pressing it with the thumb. The four typeI Mudras are GYAN Mudra (with index finger), AKASHMudra (with middle finger), PRITHVI Mudra (withring finger) and VARUN Mudra (with little finger). The four corresponding type II Mudras are VAYUMudra, SHOONYA Mudra, SURYA Mudra andbalancing the bodyType I Tattava MudrasGYAN MudraAKASH MudraPRITHVI MudraVARUN MudraType II Tattva MudrasVAYU MudraSHOONYA MudraSURYA MudraJALODAR MudraJALODAR Mudra. Type I Mudras are made to removedeficiency of a particular element, while type IIMudras are made to remove the excess of a particularelement. That is, if there is a deficiency of Water element inthe body due to any reason such as diarrhoea orvomiting causing dehydration, dry skin, dry eczema, itching, dryness of eyes, dandruff, dryness of musclesleading to cramps etc., just practice VARUNA Mudraand the water element in the body gets restored, relieving all these problems. It is so simple and has amagical effect. Conversely, if Water element is inexcess resulting in receiving more watery eyes, pleurisy (collection of water in lungs) dropsy(collection of water in stomach) or collection ofwater in feet/legs, practice JALODAR Mudra.Similarly, if there is deficiency of Earth elementresulting in weakness, loss of vitality, lowhaemoglobin level, loss of appetite, anemia, weakmuscles / bones, just practice PRITHVI Mudra byjoining tip of the ring finger with the tip of thethumb; it will work for strength, rise in vitality, increasing appetite, strong bones and muscles, risein haemoglobin etc. This Mudra also increases heightNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 17

alancing the bodyWhen we do VAYU Mudra, it removes the excess ofair in the body curing all above mentionedproblems. This Mudra acts as Natural Pain Killer. Thismudra is made by folding the index finger andpressing it with the thumb. In all the eight Tattava Mudras (described above),Thumb is invariably used either to touch the tip ofthe other fingers or to press them. As alreadymentioned, the tip of the thumb is related toPituitary gland in the brain, i.e., the controller of thebody and mind. The eight Tattava Mudras solve most of thediseases of mind and body. These mudras must beperformed at least for 45 minutes daily, either at onestretch or in three time space of 15 minutes each. However, for acute manifestation of disease such asangina, ear ache, colic, acidity the result is obtainedvery quickly in a few minutes. In chronic diseases, however these mudras must be performed daily ona sustained basis for a minute or two to get thebeneficial result. Mudras can improve even thosediseases which are termed 'Incurable' by otherpathies. Mudras can be practiced at any time whilelying, sitting, standing, walking, talking, watchingTV or travelling but not immediately after food;except in emergency cases like angina, colic, earache, heart attack, asthmatic attack, etc. For bestresult however, Mudras should be practiced whilesitting and with deep breathing. These eight Mudrasare to be performed by both the handssimultaneously. The eight Tattava Mudras lay down thefoundation of the Mudra Science. These are basicMudras. When they are supplemented with fivePRANIC Mudras, they can definitely improve almostall diseases of human body including cancer, coronary heart disease, asthma, AIDS, skin problemsetc. The five PRANIC Mudras are made for controllingthe movement of five types of Air (VAYU) in ourbody, viz., PRAN Vyau, APAN Vayu SAMAN Vayu,UDAN Vayu and VYAN Vayu. We shall discuss thesefive Mudras separately later in a different article.MUDRA THERAPY is a complete holistic methodof healing, as it creates synergy between body, mindand spirit. It cures at physical, mental and spirituallevels at no cost and is totally free - a Divine Gift. While medicinal therapies are re-active, Mudratherapy is pro-active system of health. Our body hasimmune’s capacity to heal itself through the fivefingers of the hand. They are our Divine Pharmacy. What Mudras really do is to build up our energy. Theyoperate at the subtle energy level and they are verypowerful energy savers and energy boosters. As thevital energy is the driving force behind all physical, mental and spiritual activities, Mudras restore ourphysical, mental and spiritual health in unison. Theycreate a sense of Harmony and Happiness.C-2/14A, Keshav Puram,Lawrance Road,Delhi - 110035Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012 19

alancing body functionDr. M. KalpanadeviBody ChemistryWe live and die on a cellular level. If our cells arehealthy then we are healthy and if our cells are nothealthy, if they live in a toxic environment, then weare not healthy. The human body contains about30 to 40 liters of fluid. So its cells are swimming in anocean that may be acidic, neutral or alkaline. Thebody’s systems work best in an environment that isneutral to slightly alkaline. Although some vitalorgans, like the stomach, either produce or housevery acidic substances. The pH or 'potential of Hydrogen' is a logarithmicscale that measures the relative acidity or alkalinity20of a solution. Solutions are measured from 0 (totallyacid) to 14 (totally alkaline) and 7 is neutral. Theintracellular fluid should have a pH of about 6.8. Ifthe pH is too low (more acidic) then enzymes can’twork and other cellular-level process that are life andhealth sustaining can’t take place. Why is the pH important? There is a Chinese proverb that says,“I have two dogs inside me, one is white and the otheris black. They are constantly fighting each other, but Iknow which one is going to win because I have decidedto feed just one of them”.Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012

alancing body functionThe critical factor to consider is this; cancer feedsdifferently than normal cells. The food you eat isbroken down into ATP or cell food. Each cell has itsown furnace to cook this ATP and getting the resultantenergy it needs to function. Here is what you mustunderstand, just as a car has to have gasoline to createenergy, the carburetor must mix oxygen with the gasto get combustion. The cells mitochondria must mixoxygen with Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP) to getcombustion. Without oxygen there is no combustionhence no energy is produced and the cell is shut downand will eventually die or figure some othermechanism to survive. Cancer cells on the other hand,do not feed on ATP and oxygen like normal cells, theyfeed on sugar. Technically, they are obligate glucosemetabolizers. In simple words, cancer thrives offblood glucose and it does not need oxygen, in factoxygen will deter cancer’s ability to utilize glucose. For emphasis, let us repeat that normal cells utilizeglucose plus oxygen to create energy but cancer cellsneed only sugar and not oxygen. Two times NobelPrize winner Dr. Otto Warberg was able to show thatyou could take a normal cell and by graduallydepriving it of oxygen, it would mutate into acancerous cell. When he added oxygen back, thecancer would either die or change back to its normalstructure. If you have two dogs inside you, which onewill you feed? This is where pH comes into play.Oxygen is bound up and unavailable in an acidicbody. So, oxygen is not available to the cell. Oxygenmust be accessible to the cells mitochondria just asoxygen must be mixed with gas. A clogged air filterwill shut down your car, an acid body will restrictnormal cellular metabolism. The available oxygenincreases exponentially as you move from acid toalkaline, thus making oxygen more available forhealth and vitality, it is also important to note thatthe area adjacent to a tumor is more acidic than othertissues, this is due to the fact that a byproduct ofcancers metabolism is lactic acid.Although the cells live in an almost pH neutralenvironment, they produce acid as they convert foodinto energy and then perform work. Although wedon’t eat a lot of acidic food, most of the food in thepresent modern diet produces acid ash. Ash is theresidue that is left after the body has used whatever itcan, of the food that we ingest. Acid ash in solution isa much stronger acid than that produced by the cellsand it must be eliminated by the kidneys.Consequently the body buffers the acid. Alkalineminerals (calcium, magnesium, sodium, andpotassium) are added to the strong (pH 5.5) acid whena person’s alkaline mineral reserve is full. This convertsthe strong acid into a very weak acid that is excretedas urine. On the other hand, if a person’s alkalinemineral reserves are depleted then the body is forcedto buffer the strong acid with ammonia (a strongalkaline, pH 9.25). This results in the secretion ofalkaline urine (pH of about 8.0).Urine pH is a measure of the environmentalconditions in which the cells live. It also shows howthe body responded to the food that was ingestedwithin the last 24 hours. This in turn is a good measureof how well the body is functioning.High Body AcidityHigh acidity is the most common acid-alkalinebalance problem. When the body’s mineral reservesare depleted, the body borrows minerals fromwhatever source it can. This usually means thatminerals are borrowed from bones and vital organs.Over time this weakens the organs and muscles. Someof the common health problems that result from highacidity include:l Acceleration of free radical damagel Bladder and kidney problemsl Cardiovascular weaknessl Immune system weaknessNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 21

alancing body functionllllLactic acid buildup in joints resulting in jointpainLow energyOsteoporosis, eventually resulting in brittlebones and hip fracturesWeight gainMost adults don’t produce enough digestiveenzymes and so partially digested food enters theintestine or in the stomach and becomes more acidic. In addition, most vitamins can’t be used effectively ifthe necessary minerals are not present. Vitamins A andD help hold calcium in the body and reduce the riskof calcium depletion. Alkaline foods help change thepH balance of body fluids. Finally, if you are takingascorbic acid to get your vitamin C allowance thenswitch to either citrus juice which is not acidic.Science of pHRecent scientific research into human health, sickness and disease has shown with increasingevidence that living an acid-lifestyle is extremelydetrimental to health and by living alkaline you canincrease your health, energy, vitality, immune system, youthfulness and protect yourself from disease. As recently as October 2009, a CambridgeUniversity study published in the highly respectedBritish Journal of Nutrition stated.22"The concept of diet induced ‘acidosis’ as a cause ofdisease has been a subject of interest for more than acentury. The available research makes a compelling casethat diet-induced acidosis is a real phenomenon andhas a significant, clinical, long-term pathophysiologicaleffect that should be recognized and potentiallycounterbalanced by dietary means."The researchers Pizzornoa, Frassettoa andKatzinger have clearly identified that acidosis(increased acidity in the blood – pH below 7.365) is avery real threat to our health.Furthermore, research has shown that the effectsof acidosis can directly contribute to various cancers, arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression/psychological dysfunctions,Crohn’s disease, kidney disease etc.Alkaline Minerals Balance pHAlkaline minerals are benefical in different diseases.1. Prevention of Cancer GrowthIn March 2009, Robey, Baggett, Kirkpatrick et al.published a paper in the American Association forCancer Research Journal proving that alkalineminerals (in this case NaHCO3 – sodium bicarbonate)that raise the extracellular pH of cancer tumor cellsand prevent metastasis. Their research shows that thepH of the tumors is always acidic and by using highlyalkaline minerals to raise the pH – the growth of thecancer (and involvement of lymph nodes) isprevented.(Source: Cancer Research 69, 2260, March 15, 2009 )2. Prevention of OsteoporosisA recently published study in the Journal of ClinicalEndocrinology and Metabolism (Vol 94, No 1 96-102,2009) has provided further evidence that, theconsumption of and supplementation with alkalineminerals is essential for good health. The objective ofthe study was to understand the effect of alkalineminerals (potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonateand potassium chloride) on bone health, specifically, the ability of these alkaline minerals to slow the boneresorption rate and calcium excretion. The participantswho were taking the bicarbonate supplements hadNisargopachar Varta : March 2012

This means that when taking the alkalineminerals, bones remained stronger and healthier.(Source: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Vol 94,No 1, 96-102, 2009)3. Prevention of CVDIn the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, JosephCampbell provides a thorough review of the scientificliterature surrounding minerals and disease andhighlights that the alkaline minerals, magnesium andcalcium, are critical to the prevention ofcardiovascular disease (CVD). He also highlights that,“Excessive consumption of acid producing foods, results in metabolic acidosis. When this occurs, theparathyroid hormone stimulates the removal ofcalcium from the bones and teeth (osteolysis), tobuffer or neutralize the excess acidity. After manyyears, such calcium loss results in depleted bone, boneweakness and structure.”(Source: Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine Vol. 10, No. 3 & 4, 1995)4. Rheumatoid ArthritisThis incredible study from Institute for Preventionand Nutrition (Germany) provided clear andunquestionable evidence that following an alkalinediet reduced pain and increased movement inpatients with moderately active Rheumatoid Arthritisover a 12-week period.(Source: The Open Nutrition Journal, 2, 100-105, 2008)The above studies prove, without question, thathaving sufficient alkaline mineral buffers toneutralize dietary, lifestyle and metabolic acids iscritical to maintaining excellent health, energy andvitality and to the prevention of degenerative disease.Diet for BalanceThe pH is usually more acidic upon rising from sleepthan it is during the day. It must be noted that thekidneys will usually try to keep a person’s pH around 7.It will do this by excreting either acids or alkalizingminerals. Each person is unique and efforts to alter pHmay be almost impossible for some individuals. It isimportant enough to your health to alkalize your bodyeven if it should take years to do so. There are only afew factors which determine pH. Below mentioned arethe few ways to maintain body pH in alkaline state.1. Increase Alkalinityl Drink at least three liters of neutral water perday. Drinking 3 to 5 liters of water per day will giveyour body the tools to flush toxins from your system.l You are what you eat. If you consume acid oracid forming foods you will be acidic, if you consumealkalizing foods then you will be alkaline. The general'rule of thumb' is to eat 20 percent acid foods and80 percent alkaline foods. Avoid the 'strongly acidic'foods.l Drink at least one fresh vegetable juice perday. Getting into the habit of juicing daily will giveyour body a real gift.l Plenty of vitamins and minerals are availablein fresh vegetables and fruits.l Give your body ‘good fats’ daily. This isprobably the easiest of all the fundamentals to stickto, but is probably one of the most important. Yourbody cannot make these fats by itself, but it needsthem. That is why they are called essential fatty acids.l It is important to note that carbon dioxide isacidic. This is expelled by the lungs as it is removedfrom the tissues via the veins taking blood back tothe lungs to be expelled. Exercise and deep breathinghelp by oxygenating and forcing the blood flow toincrease, thereby picking up more oxygen from thelungs and bringing more carbon dioxide to the lungsto be expelled. Brisk walking or jogging both areexcellent ways to increase respiration rates.Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012 23

alancing body function2. Decrease Acidityl Stop eating cheese, yoghurt, cream andnon vegetarin food.l Chocolate, ice creams, lollies, crisps, biscuits; anything thatyou already know is bad, youshould not keep eating.l Coke has a pH of between 2 and3. pH 2.5 is almost 50,000 timesmore acidic than neutral waterand you need 32 glasses ofneutral (pH 7) water tocounteract the consumption ofone glass of Cola.lThere are absurd amounts ofsugar in fizzy drinks. This alsoincludes packaged juice drinksand cordials.l Any fat or oil that ishydrogenated (partially orfully), saturated, solid (butter),stored outside of a fridge and ina plastic container (light, air andheat make all oils toxic) orcooked should be avoided. These fats are badnews. You should always aim to get an abundance ofnutrients from whole foods; there are no shortcutshere. This is just essential.Sources of Alkaline1. Potassium: Avocado, Spinach, Tomatoes, Broccoli,Cucumber, Sweet Potato, Beetroot, Greens, Carrots,Kidney Beans etc.2. Magnesium : Pumpkin Seeds, Spinach, Soybeans,Broccoli, Cucumber, Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin,Tomatoes, Almonds, Brown Rice etc.3. Calcium : Basil, Turnip, Greens, Broccoli, Cabbage,Green Beans, Asparagus, Garlic etc.4. Sodium : Avocado, Carrots, Cabbage, Cauliflower,Greens, Peppers, Radish, Sweet Potato, Turnip, Beetsetc.Today’s common table salt is a poison that hasnothing in common with natural liquid colloidal salt. Most common table salt is made up of chemicals thatpollute your body and wreakhavoc on your health. Your tablesalt is actually 97.5 percent sodiumchloride and 2.5 percent chemicalssuch as moisture absorbents andiodine. Sodium is essential in thebody and the above listed alkalinevegetables provide you with agood, clean source of thisimportant salt.ConclusionOur bodies are constantlyrebuilding themselves. You reallyare not the same person that youwere last year. What you do todayaffects the body that you will havetomorrow. That can be good orbad. It all depends on what youdo. The new body that you arebuilding today is affected by thefood that you eat, the waste thatyou eliminate (and as important,by the waste that you don’teliminate), by the air that youbreath, the liquids that you drink and by the stressthat you feel and how you respond to it. Everythingthat you do affects the new body that you arebuilding for yourself. A long-term acid ashproducing diet creates a toxic environment at thecellular level. If the cells can’t function, the bodyceases to function. On the other hand, a healthy dietcreates an environment that is conducive to cellularand total health. The four main alkaline minerals are calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. These areabundant in fresh vegetables (particularly greens), andit is good to eat plenty each day!Junior NaturopathNational Institute of Naturopathy6, Tadiwala Road,Pune 411001.24Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012

controlling your sensesPratyaharaThe Gateway to Antarang YogaSadashiv NimbalkarThe word Pratyahara is made up by adding the word "à{V' to the word "Amhma'.The word "Amhma' comes from Am + h (verb) which means "to take in".In the normal sense, "Amhma' means food for the body. However, if we observescientifically all our intake or whatever we receive can be called ""Amhma''.In the chemical reaction of two basic elementsthere is a necessity of third element, called catalystand only in presence of this element the chemicalreaction takes place. In the same way the appropriateand adequate study and learning of Pratyahara helpssadhakas to enter 'Antarang Yoga' from 'Bahirang Yoga'smoothly and at ease. Therefore if we view from thisangle 'Pratyahara' can be called the main entrance tothe Antarang Yoga. Therefore knowing its importancesadhakas should regularly practice Pratyahara withfaith, substantially for a longer period.Meaning of 'Pratyahara'The word Pratyahara is made up by adding theword "à{V' to the word "Amhma'. The word "Amhma' comesfrom Am + h (verb) which means "to take in". In thenormal sense, "Amhma' means food for the body. However if we observe scientifically all our intake orwhatever we receive can be called “Amhma“.We receive the outside image through our eyesand the sound through our ears. The various types offragrance/aroma and smell through our nose. Bytongue we experience different types of tastes.Through our skin we experience various types oftouch. Eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin are thesensory organs, which provide various types ofoutside knowledge through their route to the brain. The work area of each of these sensory organs isearmarked and fixed. All the various types ofinformation received by these sensory organs isforwarded to the brain. The classification of thisinformation is done by the mind.Place of 'Pratyahaahara' a' in YogadaadarsharshanThe great sage Patanjali has suggested two mainways for achieving the final goal of yoga, i.e., 'Kaivalya',these are 'Vairagya' which means renunciation and'Abhyasa' means prolonged study and learning.Abhyasa includes the eight fold or""Aï>m§J `moJ'' which includes Yam, Niyam, Asana andPranayam which are the first four parts jointly calledas Bahirang Yoga. The last three parts of the AstangYoga, i.e., Dharana, Dhyan and Samadhi are relatedto the mind and are very minute compared to theNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 25

controlling your sensesfirst four. These three parts together are known asAntarang Yoga. Pratyahara is the fifth part or the stepwhich is also known as the bridge between theBahirang Yoga and Antarang Yoga.Pratyahara is a planned yogasadhana in itself. It isexplained in the 'Patanjali Yogdarshana' in thefollowing words:ñd{df`mg§à`moJo {MÎmñdénmZwH$ma B©d|{Ð`mUm§ àË`mhma: &&In Pratyahara, all the sensory organs withdrawthemselves from their respective work areas andconcentrate on the inner consciousness. In short,Pratyahara means to disconnect the sensory organs fromthe outside world and turn them inward to look, to hear,to feel, to taste within. This study of inward turning ofthe sensory organs is the practice of Pratyahara. As a result of regular practice of Pratyahara, all thesensory organs come under complete control ofconscious awareness as stated in the following sutra:VV: na_m dí`VopÝÐ`mUm_² &&“All the sensory organs come under completecontrol due to Pratyahara and sadhaka’s entry intothe Antarang Yoga becomes easier” is the underlinedmeaning of this sutra. The very purpose of Pratyaharais to stop the supply of empirical sensations to thesensory organs of the body. Hence, there will be nohankering after the sensuous pleasures by the mind. The description of the "pñVWàk' the one withperfect self control is given in 'Bhagwadgeeta' in thefollowing stanza :`Xm g§haVo Mm`§ Hw$_m]S²>JmZrd gd©e:BpÝÐ`mUrpÝÐ`mW}ä`ñVñ` àËkm à{V{ð>Vm &&"Like a tortoise which pulls its limbs inside from allthe sides; the yogsadhaka withdraws all the sensoryorgans from worldly sensual pleasures and diverts/directs them within (inside/inward), where he hasachieved the level of complete control over the stateof conscious mind which is in perfect harmony withthe inner self."According to The Gita, for achieving the stabilityand tranquillity of the mind, Pratyahara practice isnecessary. This is how Pratyahara is mentioned in TheGita for its importance.26Pratyahara : The technique to control thesensory organsThe great sage Patanjali while narrating the resultof the practice of Pratyahara says,VV: na_m dí`VopÝÐ`mUm_² &&The prolonged practice of Pratyahara helps thesadhaka to bring the sensory organs under completecontrol. The tendency of the sensory organs to seekthe out side (worldly pleasures) changes and theystart looking inward, which helps in concentration ofmind. In this context, an example of a cobbler will beillustrative:One cobbler used to do his business on a roadsideplace. While doing his work, he used to concentratehis mind and body on the work. One day, a processionof the king passed through the road. It was a grandprocession with the musical band at the center. Therewere fire crackers and fireworks. The people wereshouting slogans in favor of the king and offeringflowers and roses and throwing colours. The street wasovercrowded with people. Sweets were beingdistributed. While all this was happening, the cobblerwas completely engrossed in stitching the shoes. TheNisargopachar Varta : March 2012

controlling your sensesgrand colourful procession passed from the road infront of him. Some people who came after theprocession over inquired from the cobbler whether itwas king's procession which went the way? Thecobbler was surprised. He said that he does not know.He was busy in stitching the shoes. This was so becausethe attention of all his sense organs were concentratedand centered on the stitching of the shoes, hence hewas unable to see, hear or listen anything else. With the regular practice of Pratyahara, thesensory organs come under complete control of thesadhaka. The sensory organs can be brought undercontrol through love and easy techniques and noteither by force or by restrictions. When the mind isturned inward, with help of conscious judgment andwith love, it is made to understand the eternal truthand the self realisation. By this method, the sensoryorgans which follow the mind can be easily broughtunder control. Mind and sensory organs aredependent on each other; hence they easily followone another.Practice of PratyaharaMind has many facets.According to different surroundingsand situations there are positive ornegative thoughts including thosewhich are contrary orcontradictory to each other. Thesevarious facets of the mind areknown as cultured mind, tamedmind, untamed mind, naturalmind, beast like mind orcontrolled mind. All these arebased on the behavior of theman in a particular way.Furthermore, these aredifferent presentations ofone and the same mind. These various facets aredifferent but they belong toone and the same mind. At every movement, thekaleidoscope has the different designs, likewise alongwith the change in mind frame, the thinking changes. The mind by its very nature is unstable. It is a streamof consciousness which is ever changing and it doesnot have fixed entity. It gets attracted by the everchanging scenario in the empirical world which ismomentary or short lived. In such a world, mind likesto roam with the help of and through the sensoryorgans. It is very basic nature of the mind. Over thetime, it gets addicted to worldly sensuous pleasuresand it becomes very difficult to get rid of theaddiction.Along with the pleasant empirical pleasures, whenthe unhappy and bitter experiences are also received, the conscious mind becomes aware of the differencebetween the eternal and the short lived/meaningless.While doing anything, there is always a ‘for andagainst’ dialogue in the mind. To enjoy the short livedempirical sensuous pleasures or to seek the eternaljoy by making the sensory organs to look inward. This is nicely explained by Saint Tukaram in thefollowing words;""am̧{XZ Amåhm§ `wÕmMm àg§J'' &There is a ongoing fight or strugglebetween the conscious mind whichcan decide good and bad and thenatural tendency of the mind is to goout in search of worldly pleasures. Inthis struggle, whoever is strongerwins and accordingly the personbehaves like a saint or a demon. ThePratyahar practice helps theconscious awareness to bringcontrol over the untamed mindand on the strong sensory organswhich are like wild beasts. In yogabhyas, theimportance is based onregular practice and notsimply on studying andknowing through intellect.Benefit of asana cannot beavailed by reading the books or by listening tolectures. For receiving the benefits, it is necessary tohave complete faith which is further required to befollowed by prolonged, regular practice. The sameis true about Pratyahara. Therefore directions aboutfew practices of Pratyahara for practitioners areNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 27

controlling your sensesgiven ahead. The practice may be selected afterconsidering one’s capacity, purpose, liking, availabletime, age and after fully understanding thetechnique, it may be practiced to ones capacity onregular basis.1. Shanmukhi MudraThis is one of the mudras mentioned in 'Hatha yoga'.It is symbolic and indicative in nature. This is done byclosing all sensory organs with fingers and byimagination, that all these organs have stoppedfunctioning. With help of the power of imagination, the outward movement of sensory organs is to bestopped and to turn them inward along with the mindand to find the inner truth is the purpose of'Shanmukhi Mudra'.TechniqueSit on comfortable position with back erect. Steadyyour body and mind and prepare them for the mudra.Take both your hands parallel to the ground, thenfold them in elbows. Bring the palms near to the faceand with both the thumbs slowly close both the eardrums. Keep both the index fingers on the respectiveupper eye lids without any pressure. Both the middlefingers be on respective nostrils but do not close thenostril by applying pressure. The ring fingers on theupper lips and the small fingers on lower lips may bekept on respective sides. This way, technically, eyes, ears, nose, mouth (tongue) are symbolically closed. Now, imagine that all the sensory organs havestopped their respective earmarked work, i.e., seeing, listening, smelling, tasting and feeling the touch. So,the mind will automatically get focused inward andall the sensory organs will also join the mind in pursuitof innermost discovery.Duration : 1 to 10 minutes either in the morning or inthe evening.Benefitsu The tendency of the mind and the sensoryorgans to run out reduces.u One becomes aware of inner power.u The mind relaxes in unexpected and sudden joy.u The mind’s capacity to take judgment improvesand becomes strong.2. Silence/'Mauna'TechniqueKeep the mouth closed. Stop talking and eating.Follow this religiously, but do not pressurize yourmind. Slowly over the period, increase the time ofquietness and enjoy it. While observing silence, closethe eyes and stop receiving any image/ sight througheyes. In lonely observation of silence and fasting, there are extended benefits. Similarly, by closing theinlet parts of sensuous organs, the mind does notremain calm and quiet. It may become more restlessand aggressive like a tiger closed in a cage andforcefully try to escape. Therefore many times, theexperience of sensual pleasures is less harmfulcompared to forceful restraint. Therefore, the controlon the mind is to be exercised with love and affection, tactfully, gradually over a period of time. Here, practice of 'Pranadharna' is helpful for handling ofthe mind. While observing silence, once mind is fixedon breathing through Pranadharana, it gets de-linkedfrom the sensuous pleasures. Renunciation isautomatically achieved. Sensory organs become cooland less active. The control of the wisdom on thesensory organs increases.Duration : Every day from 60 minutes to full day, itcan be practiced.BenefitsuuuuSensory organs come under control of theintellect.Mind starts enjoying the plunge within, i.e.,Antarang Yoga.Mind becomes steady, calm and quiet.Overall health improves.Note: 'Pranadharana' means to count theinhalation and exhalation and /or to feel thetemperature of the air at the nostrils.3. Break the unityMost sensuous pleasures and the sensory organsalways depend on one another. Hence, it is difficultto isolate each of them. In the process of the empiricalenjoyment of the sensuous pleasures, the presenceof all the three element is essential. The absence ofany one of them makes the enjoyment process28Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012

controlling your sensesimpossible. During enjoyment, the sensory organsalmost become part of the mind. Generally, peoplefeel that the sensory organs enjoy the sensuouspleasures in their respective fields; such as after seeinga beautiful sight the eyes feel contended, afterlistening to the melodious music the ears feel happy. The fragrance of the flower makes the nosecontended. After a long time meeting, one feelsheavenly touch in mother’s arms. Such statements arecommon. It is therefore felt that the worldly pleasureis enjoyed by the sensory organs. But, in fact, the mindconsummates the worldly pleasures through thesensory organs, it takes feed back of the positive andnegative experiences. In the sensual enjoyment, thereis absolute unity among Mind, Sensory organs andthe Sensual pleasures. They have inseparable relation.Once this is broken the desires for enjoyment of theworldly pleasures will diminish. There is a say that,“United we stand and divided we fall”.So far, the sensory organs are together, it is verydifficult to keep them away from the desires but oncethese are divided, desires get reduced and the sensoryorgans come under control of the mind. There is an exemplary story in 'Panchatantra'. OneLion King was reigning in a jungle. Everybody washappy in his kingdom. Everybody was in coordinationand in harmony. There were four bulls in that jungle, who used to trouble other simple animals. They usedto intrude into other's territory and do the destruction.King received many complaints. But the bulls werevery strong and all found of them were united. Whenthey were together, it was difficult for even the Kingto bring them under control, so the normal course ofnotice, warning, etc., did not work. The only way leftwas to divide them. King assigned this work to thesmart cunning fox. While the bulls were grazing, thefox found one of them aside and fixed his mind tellingthe lies about the other two and made him jealous.Similarly, fox found the other also alone one after theother and made them suspicious about one another. This resulted in a big fight among the four andthereafter they started staying separately from oneanother. The King took this opportunity and broughtthem under his control one after the other, separatelyand made use of their power for development andhappiness of his kingdom. The mind, sensory organsand the sensuous pleasures are similarly united andthe mind’s power of judgment does not hold goodbefore them. The desire of sensuous pleasures goeson increasing day by day and turns into best. At thatvery moment, by any means the unity of the threeshould be broken in such a way that the sensoryorgans calm down and become subservient to thejudgment of the mind. Therefore, the sensory organsremain under the mind’s control. This amounts tosuccessful practice of Pratyahara. For this, study ofcontrol on the sensory organs through theirwithdrawal is the important option available.4. Withdrawal of Sensory OrgansTechniqueSit in a comfortable position. Post an attractivepicture or an idol on the front and look at it for sometime and enjoy the sight. Hold the situation for sometime and while in same situation remember mostmelodious song or play a cassette and get fullyengrossed in listening to the song. The moment, themind is fully engaged in listening, though the eyesare open and the picture is in front of the eyes, stillØØØPatient’s Feedback InvitedTaking Naturopathy Treatment?Speak out through‘Nisargopachar Varta’Share your experiences withNaturopathy, it’s benefits andApplicability to lifestyle.Encourage others,To relish ‘LIFE NATURAL’.To be free from diseases. To enjoy the bliss of Life withpeaceful mind.WE SHALL BE HAPPY TO PUBLISH THEMFOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE.DirectorNisargopachar Varta : March 2012 29

controlling your sensesmind will be away from the desire to see. This ismomentary renunciation/withdrawal of sight.Similarly, while eating a fine dish, involve the mind inthe music, so that the mind is away from the taste. While enjoying the fragrance let the mind be involvedin the pleasant touch, that there is no effect of thefragrance. After practicing this for a long time, whileexperiencing any of the sensual pleasures, the mindmay be turned / centered inward after withdrawingit from the sensory organs. This way, the sensoryorgans will get distracted from sensuous pleasuresand become one with the mind. This withdrawal ofthe sensory organs from sensual pleasures is a verygood method to establish the achievement ofPratyahara.5. Passive ObservationBy making unintentional passive observation thedesires reduces. This also reduces the hyper sensitivityof mind and body. The sensory organs withdraw fromoutside and try to find the real inner joy within themind.u Withdrawal of sense organs is achieved. Senseorgans come under active control.u The unity of mind, sensory organs andsensuous pleasures break and they fall apart.u Momentary nature of the sensory pleasure isrealised.u The taste of the mind changes and it becomesmore introvert.u The search of eternal happiness begins.Yoga Bhavan, Plot No - 14Sector - 9A, VashiNavi Mumbai - 400 703MaharashtraTechniqueBe cautions and alert. As if dividing the consciousmind into two (one active and the other passive) andlet the passive mind observe the sensations derivedby the sensuous mind while enjoying the worldlypleasures as a third party. Only be a witness, withoutpassing any judgment or comments. This is known as“gmjr ^md“ witnessing.Due to the passive observation withoutinvolvement and any expectation by the consciousmind, the desires of the mind, intensity of thesensations of pleasures and the tendency to run afterthe pleasures automatically reduces and one canachieve Pratyahara.Note: To enjoy the pleasures by one consciousmind and to observe passively at them through thesecond mind is an art which can be mastered bypractice.BenefitsuDesire of worldly pleasures reduces.30Nisargopachar Varta : March 2012
