COST OF LIVINGACCOMMODATIONESOS FRAMEWORKLIVEAUSTRALIAAustralia is a young and vibrant country –and we engage with the world with positivity, determination and a keen sense of what’spossible. It’s a resolute spirit that goes rightthrough to our approach to teaching andlearning – to inspire confidence, createreal-world skills, and encourage independentthinking, teamwork and leadership. The Australian Government estimates that theaverage living costs for an international student is atleast A$18,610. This pays for food, accommodation, telephone, gas, electricity, transport andentertainment. Your living costs could be higher orlower than this, depending on where you study andyour lifestyle. Sydney is generally more expensive thanother cities or towns in New South Wales.SCHOOL AGED DEPENDENTSIf you have school-aged dependents (i.e. unmarriedchildren between 5 and 18 years old) accompanyingyou to Australia for more than three months youare required to ensure that adequate arrangementshave been made for their schooling. Yourdependents will be charged the full schoolfee if they are enrolled in either a government ornon-government school.WORKAs an international student you are permitted towork up to 40 hours per fortnight during academicterms and full time during holidays, provided thatwork does not interfere with your studies. Youshould ensure you are financially independentbefore coming to Australia.Homestay is when you live with an Australian familyin their home. The homestay family provides youwith meals, laundry facilities and your own roomwith a study desk. You are usually asked to sharesome household chores. Homestay also givesyou the chance to practise your English at homeevery day. This service can be arranged withyour enrolment.OTHER ACCOMMODATIONHostels provide a friendly, safe, supervisedenvironment. You get your own room or a sharedroom. Dining room, games room and televisionroom are communal. Many hostels alsoprovide meals.Shared Accommodation gives you more freedom. You can share a room, house or apartmentdepending on your budget. Usually you’ll need tosupply your own furniture. You also have to supplyyour own towels, pillows, sheets and blankets.Studio apartments or one-bedroom apartmentsare smaller and less expensive to rent than largerapartments, but it is a good option if you are moreindependent and need your own private space.Australia’s laws promote quality education andconsumer protection for overseas students. These lawsare known as the ESOS Framework and they include theEducation Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act2000 and the National Code. For more information about the ESOS Framework go tohttps://aei.gov.au/Regulatory-Information/Education-Services-for-Overseas-Students-ESOS-Legislative-Framework/ESOSQuickInformation/Documents/ESOS%20Factsheets/ESOS%20Factsheets%202012/The%20ESOS%20framework.pdfHEALTHOverseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is compulsoryfor international students studying in Australia. What does OSHC provide?› It covers international students for certain medicalcosts (e.g. doctor’s visits or admission to hospital).› Extra cover is available for an additional fee.› Serious medical problems should be treated beforeyou come to Australia, as standard OSHC generallydoes not cover pre-existing medical conditions. It is wise to read the OSHC policy with care to seeif additional cover is needed.06 TWELVE APOSTLES, GREAT OCEAN ROAD07
