Keeping your assets safe during lay-upGAC Ship Lay-Up Solutions (GLUS) works with “best in class” partners under a single umbrella to provide the broad range of skills andexperience required for the comprehensive care of a ship being laid-up. Part of the GAC Solutions stable, GLUS is a strategic partnershipwith Bibby Ship Management Ltd and DehuTech AB which offers cost-effective technical management and dehumidification solutions forlaid-up vessels, tailored to the specific needs of each client, vessel and area of trade at a range of lay-up locations worldwide. Why Lay-Up?Laying-up vessels makes sense, especially at times of low demandfor ocean freight and depressed rates. During a regional or globalrecession, scrap prices drop and, over a period of time, significantfinancial benefits can be gained by laying-up a vessel instead ofscrapping it. Other financial benefits include:• Reduced wear and tear on vessel and machinery• Reduced or no crew costs• Reduced or no bunker costs• Reduced P&I premiums by up to 50 percent• Reduced H&M premiumTailored-made Lay-Up OptionsThanks to GAC’s global network of ship agency and in-depthlocal knowledge, GLUS offers owners flexibility in their choiceof attractive lay-up locations around the world close to majorshipping routes or other areas of interest, as well as a wide rangeof secure, safe and cost-effective solutions.Depending on the extent the vessel needs to be laid-up, GLUSoffers four different modes of lay-up – Hot (up to 3 months),Warm (up to 12 months), Cold (up to 5 years) and Long Term (5plus years) – for varying duration.Every GLUS client is individually evaluated and once their locationpreference and service needs have been identified, they areintroduced to the local GLUS partner, who will prepare a tailoredpackage to meet their requirements.Scope of ServicesIn accordance with recommendations by major classificationsocieties and flag states, preparation for lay-up should preferablybe carried out with the vessel’s crew, as they are the ones whoknow their ship best. GLUS can however assist with the wholework from arrival to the lay-up location. Once the vessel isready, however, GLUS assist owners with and / or coordinate thefollowing services – and more – through local providers.• A wide choice of vessel lay-up locations, with thorough localknowledge• Support with documentation to obtain permits from localauthorities• Safety and security advice• Advice on the lay-up process including supply of proceduresand checklists• Technical management• Routine maintenance and preservation• Provision of machinery such as heaters, dehumidifiers andother equipment• Regular monitoring of the vessel mooring and safe berth• Round-the-clock security• Comprehensive monthly reports to owners• Crew management / crew supply• Ship supply services• Any other agency or logistics services as requested by theowner• Assistance with efficient start-up after the lay-up period

GAC Ship Lay-Up SolutionsLay-up OptionsLaying-up a ship is designed to:• Preserve and maintain the vessel structure and machinery byprotecting against corrosion and static seizure.• Maintain the security, safety and protection of the vessel, crewand environment. The extent to which a vessel will be laid-up depends on severalfactors, including: anticipated lay-up period duration; the need toreduce running costs; time required for reactivation; and the ageand value of the ship.GLUS offers four different modes of lay-up:• Hot up to 3 months (H)• Warm up to 12 months (W)• Cold up to 5 years (C)• Long term 5 plus years (L)Hot lay-up – suitable for up to 3 months out of service with24 hour reactivationIn this condition, the vessel is held within Classification and FlagState requirements, crew numbers may be reduced to minimumsafety manning limits. Machinery is kept operational. The vessel islocated in an area close to potential cargo trade routes.Warm lay-up – suitable for up to 12 months out of servicewith one-week reactivationIn this condition, vessel manning is reduced to below thetrading limit and in agreement with the Flag State, ClassificationSociety, insurers and local authorities. Most ports will only granta temporary permit to lay-up a vessel in this condition in port, provided that Class and Flag surveys are conducted. There may belocal restrictions on vessels operations such as restrictions on thetransfer of oily bilge water.Cold lay-up – suitable for up to five years out of servicewith three-week reactivationIn this condition, vessel manning is in line with emergencyrequirements to deal with fire, flooding, mooring and securitywatch. Cold ship lay-up locations are generally remote so access tothe vessel can be limited. Upon reactivation, the vessel may needto go direct to dry dock before trading, depending on the extentof any hull marine growth. It is imperative that all preparationsand processes during cold lay-up are well documented as crewchanges may be significant.Long-term lay-up suitable for up to more than five yearsout of service with three-month reactivationIn this extended condition, preparations are comprehensive asoriginal manufacturers are consulted for critical equipment, Anyremedial work done on reactivation is likely to be extensive andunpredictable, such as renewal of alarm systems that may havebecome obsolete. For long-term lay-ups, several vessels may belaid up side-by-side to minimise supervision costs.GLUS is aware of all these potential problems involved in lay-upsand has the experience, technical expertise and resources to avoidthe pitfalls.
