A. <strong>The</strong> Examination RegulationsEnrolment and registrationAll candidates must be members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Loss</strong> Adjusters.Warning: whilst the learning materials may be purchased by non members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> andthe cost includes entry to the examinations; non members are not able to register for theexaminations.Application to join the <strong>Institute</strong>Candidates wishing to join the <strong>Institute</strong> should view the information on the website athttp://www.cila.co.uk/ Please note that the <strong>Institute</strong>’s Charter provides the rules on whomay be admitted as a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> and candidates should ensure they meet theCharter requirements which may be found at http://www.cila.co.uk/about-us/charter-andbye-laws.Registration and application for examinationsRegistration and application for the examinations can only be completed online athttp://www.mindhub.co.uk/category_s/100.htm . Payment is made on line to Pearson Vuenot to the <strong>Institute</strong>.Examination Centres<strong>Certificate</strong> centres may be found worldwide. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is unable to refund any paymentsfor materials or entries to examinations due to a lack <strong>of</strong> a centre in close proximity. You aretherefore required to verify before purchasing materials that examination centres areavailable in your locality. This can be done at www.pearsonvue.com/vtclocator/ .In the event that there is no local centre to you, please contact the <strong>Institute</strong> by email toinfo@cila.co.uk.All papers are multiple choice and candidates receive their result immediately from the centrestaff.Postponement or cancellation <strong>of</strong> examinationCandidates may postpone a booked examination by following the procedures set out onhttp://www.pearsonvue.com/cila/ however this must be done at least three days prior to theexamination. Failure to do so, non attendance or attendance without the correctidentification documents will result in the loss <strong>of</strong> the entire fee. Candidates will be required tore-purchase learning materials and re-enter the examination. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is unable to makeany refunds in this respect.Exemptions<strong>The</strong> only exemption available is to CH1 (Introduction to the Insurance Industry). This can begained by satisfactory pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> the candidate holding either the <strong>Chartered</strong> Insurance <strong>Institute</strong>’s(CII) <strong>Certificate</strong> or Diploma qualifications. Candidates should note that credits <strong>of</strong> equal orhigher value than the CII <strong>Certificate</strong> or Diploma will not be accepted as an exemption fromCH1. <strong>The</strong> candidate must hold the whole <strong>of</strong> either qualification, CII <strong>Certificate</strong> or Diploma.5 <strong>of</strong> 7 <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> Second Edition <strong>2013</strong>


Fees• Introduction to the Insurance Industry (CH1) - £175• Introduction to Claims Handling (CH2) - £175• Advanced Claims Handling (CH3) - £185B - <strong>The</strong> Qualification<strong>The</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> qualification is made up <strong>of</strong> the following three subjects:• CH1 – Introduction to the Insurance Industry• CH2 – Claims Handling• CH3 – Advanced Claims Handling (Handling Claims for Specific <strong>Loss</strong>es)Upon completion, the <strong>Institute</strong> will issue a certificate to successful candidates.C - Learning & Study MaterialsWhen purchasing the initial entry to each examination, each candidate is able to download allthe learning material from the Pearson VUE website: Mindhub. On purchasing the examinationvoucher, the candidate will be provided with a link to the website to download the learningmaterial.Whilst the examinations are all based on the downloadable learning material, the candidate isadvised that they should complete all the exercises within the learning material and inaddition should consult other text books such as Property Insurance Law and Claims (ISBN-13:978-1-85609-406-1 , ISBN-10: 1-85609-406-5) to aid understanding.D - Recommended study periods<strong>The</strong> learning material has been prepared so that the learner may study for short periods <strong>of</strong>time at each session. However, to gain a pass the candidate will be required to demonstratesufficient understanding during the computer based multiple choice examinations. <strong>The</strong><strong>Institute</strong> recommends at least sixty (60) hours <strong>of</strong> study for each paper. Purchasing thematerials and sitting the examination does not entitle the candidate to the qualification.When to enterCandidates may enter an examination at any time but are recommended not to enter theexaminations until they are sure they will have completed their study and learning prior tositting the examination.E - Pass Marks<strong>The</strong> papers sat by each candidate may be different and as a result there are minor variances inthe required pass mark due to the individual weighting <strong>of</strong> each question. This is to ensure thateach candidate is treated fairly. <strong>The</strong> pass mark is, however, for each paper no higher than75%.6 <strong>of</strong> 7 <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> Second Edition <strong>2013</strong>


F - Appeals<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> will consider an appeal against the result <strong>of</strong> an examination. <strong>The</strong> candidate mustsubmit, by e-mail, an appeal within fourteen days <strong>of</strong> taking the examination. <strong>The</strong> candidateshould set out, in no more than 500 words, the basis <strong>of</strong> the appeal and make payment to the<strong>Institute</strong> the sum <strong>of</strong> £100. <strong>The</strong> appeal will then be considered by the Examinations Committee.G - Liability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong><strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s liability shall be restricted to the cost <strong>of</strong> entering the examination if for anyreason the examination cannot be held e.g., there is a failure <strong>of</strong> equipment preventing thecompletion <strong>of</strong> the examination or for any other reason including negligence on the part <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Institute</strong>.H - Cost <strong>of</strong> Re-sits• Introduction to the Insurance Industry (CH1) - £110• Introduction to Claims Handling (CH2) - £110• Advanced Claims Handling (CH3) - £120I - Unit Achievement<strong>The</strong> entire qualification must be completed in full to entitle the candidate to the respectivequalification.
