<strong>NELSON</strong>-<strong>DENNY</strong> <strong>COMPREHENSION</strong> <strong>TEST</strong><strong>ADMINISTRATION</strong> & SCORINGThe Nelson-Denny Comprehension Test is useful because it provides scores for a timed readingcondition, an extended time condition, and a reading rate.Administration:You will need the Self-Scorable Answer Sheet and the Test Booklet Form H.Give only the Comprehension subtest, Form H.Initial time limit is 20 minutes.After the first minute of this 20 minutes has passed, while the timer continues to run, ask theclient to identify what line he is reading (numbers on the right margin of the reading passage).Be sure that you do not stop the timer.Record as the Raw Score for Reading Rate on attached table.If the client has not finished all of the test items at the end of the 20 minutes, note the itemnumber just completed and allow 12 minutes of extended time.If he has not finished at the end of the extended time limit, he needs to stop anyway.Scoring:Answer sheet is self-scoring.Tear off at side perforation, go to the last page, which is Form H.1. Count the number of items completed correctly within the 20-minute time limit.2. Double that number and enter as Timed Comprehension Raw Score on the attached table.3. If extended time was used, count the total number of items correct for all items completed. Besure to include correct items from the initial 20-minute time limit, plus correct items from theextended 12 minutes.4. Double that number and enter as Extended Time Comprehension Raw Score.5. Go to manual page 22 for score table for Form H. Use Timed Comprehension Raw Score tofind Scale Score and Grade Equivalent and record on table.6. Go to manual page 23. Record Scale Score for Reading Rate.7. If extended time was used, go to page 25. Use Extended Time Raw Score to find Scale Scoreand Grade Equivalent for Extended Time Comprehension.8. Go to manual page 28 to find table according to client’s grade level. In that table, use ScaleScore to find Stanine and Percentile Rank Scores.
