MOTORSHOW 2011New Car Buyers’ GuideMotorshow 2011 New Car GuideNew Car Buyers’ GuideMotorshow’s new and used car guides for buyers arecompiled by specialists who have years of experience andextensive research facilities. Uniquely and very importantlythey are in touch with the new and used car market, searching out where car buyers are being disappointedand where others are really getting satisfaction.Taking account of the various car segments, where preferentialrequirements vary, we rate all cars that are availableon the Irish car market. We acknowledge, simply due to competitive marketforces, that there are no really poor new cars beingoffered anymore. However, there are vast differencesin residual values, build quality, specification levels, prices, performance and economy levels etc. These andmany other factors greatly influence the ratings of oneseemingly similar car over others. No other guide tells you, which cars are the best andthe worst buys in plain English. We tell it as it really is,and you can be assured that the advice that you get inMotorshow 2011, our annual car buyers’ guide isindependent and consumer driven. Motorshow 2011is written by Eddie Cunningham, Padraic Deane andJohn Loughran with additional research by CatherineConboy.Special Readers NoticeBecause prices, etc., can change, we suggest thatonce you have made a short-list of cars that youare interested in, you should confirm prices andspecifications with dealers when shopping for yournew car.In our guide “prices start at” refers to the lowestprice of the passenger version in that model range.Whilst every care has been taken in compiling thisguide from information received from the distributorsat the time of writing, (January 2011) no responsibilitycan be accepted by the publishers or staff ofAutomotive Publications Ltd. for any errors oromissions. The JargonMost motorists don’t understand the jargon used by carmakersor in car advertising, surveys over a number of years have concluded.Just five per cent of 4,000 motorists surveyed understood theabbreviation TNT, which stands for taxed and tested.Only 10 per cent understood the abbreviation MFSW – multifunctionsteering wheel, while fewer than one in three (30 percent) understood the abbreviation EBD, which stands forElectronic Brake Distribution. The most recognisable of the eight abbreviations used, wasABS (anti-lock braking system), which was correctly identifiedby 76 per cent of the respondents.Survey points to major consumer annoyance with “dealerspeak”and brands it the most frustrating part of buying a usedcar.Far from making the used-car buying process simpler, termslike FSH, ESR and ICE confuse the average consumer. 95 percent of men and 98 percent of women don’t know what themost common terms mean. The research also reveals that 27 per cent of those polledbelieve second-hand car dealers deliberately use car jargon toconfuse potential customers into a sale; and 39 per cent ofpeople are put off buying a used car due to dealer-speak.The top 10 most confusing car terms are:1. 18AW - 18 inch Alloy Wheels2. FAR - Front Arm Rest3. ESR - Electric Sun Roof4. ICE - In Car Entertainment5. EFW - Electric Front Windows6. EW - Electric Windows7. FSH - Full Service History8. PAS - Power Assisted Steering9. BHP - Brake Horse Power10. RCL - Remote Central Locking68
