2TR-FE engine (WorkMate models).1KD-FTV engine (SR and SR5 models).4x4 Double Cab SR5 model shown.1GR-FE engine (SR and SR5 models). One of the reasons is the ‘common rail’ fuelinjection technology which gives you a balancedpackage of power output and reliability. Engineimprovements even extend to a four valvecylinder head, centrally located injector andin-piston combustion chamber for betterperformance. And with low emissions, it evencleans up after work. Toyota engineers havealso made it surprisingly smooth runningwith twin counter-rotating balance shaftswhich reduces NVH. Plus, electronic enginemanagement and an electronic ‘drive-by-wire’throttle makes for greater driveability.Latest suspension technology. The HiLux 4x4 and 4x2 have come ahead inleaps and bounds in the suspension, steeringand brake departments. Toyota has takeneverything it has learned from over a decadeand a half of Toyota off-roaders like Prado,LandCruiser and other SUVs. The best has beenused in the HiLux, delivering big improvements inride quality, handling and vehicle stability.Cornering performance is enhanced by a doublewishbone coil-spring front suspension with aball-joint mounted stabiliser bar. This suspensiondesign also results in a more comfortable ridewhile giving more confident handling despiteroad undulations or uneven camber.Attention to detail even extended to optimumpositioning of the coil-springs to help avoiddamage off-road. As for manoeuvring, powerassisted rack and pinion aids steering precisionand ease. So you can negotiate your way througha congested worksite, or around corners on theway to the mountains. To slow things downsafely and quickly, ABS is standard on the SR5,and optional on WorkMate and SR models.Tested in Australia.Conditions don’t come much tougher than inAustralia. So to thoroughly test the many designand engineering innovations, Toyota tested HiLuxat high speed in the outback to make sure it wastough enough for the rest of the world.

WorkMate (non-ABS option) model shown.WorkMate.Step in, stretch out.WorkMate Double Cab.HiLux boasts a large and spacious cabin. It’s alsoeasy to drive, as sensible ergonomic design hasensured that important controls are placed rightwhere you need them. The seating is more supportive and includes adriver’s bucket seat with a reclining seat backon all models, ensuring greater comfort onlonger journeys. Comfort levels have also beenimproved through a quieter cabin. On long tripsyou’ll appreciate that HiLux has a streamlinedbody, which reduces wind noise.Further measures to improve handling include adramatic 50% increase in chassis verticalbending rigidity, large diameter body mountsand extensive use of high tensile steel.Being a body on frame design helps isolate thecabin from engine vibration and road noise. Plusthere’s a high-density bonnet silencer and dashouter silencer, a double felt inner silencer and anasphalt sheet on the cabin floor. So as you takeoff, you may think you’re still wearing earplugs. The quieter cabin ensures you’ll enjoy the audiosystem all the more with its electronic tuneAM/FM radio and single disc CD player with AudioInput for your iPod® # or MP3 player. There’s also plenty of storage with severalcupholders and large moulded pockets in thedoors which are handy for maps, order books andother essentials. Then as you leave this moderninterior, you have the reassurance of an immobiliserto help keep other blokes from ‘borrowing’ whatwill soon become your favourite tool. When you choose the option of Anti-skidBraking System (ABS) on the WorkMate youget the added peace of mind that comes withextra safety.#iPod® is a registered tradmark of Apple Inc.

Disc brake.ABS optional on WorkMate and SR models.Pre-tensioning seatbelts (outer belts only).SR5 model shown.Head and leg impact protection structure.Work safe in HiLux.HiLux is thankfully big on safety as well. Ithas been designed for outstanding crashperformance to the toughest Australian andEuropean standards. Testing has included the40% offset deformable barrier test at 64km/h(because you need protection from collisionsthat aren’t always straight on). For those thatare, meeting the requirements of the full frontalimpact test at 56km/h and side impact at55km/h offer peace of mind. You’ll also breathe easier with dual SRS airbags.Pretensioning seatbelts, standard across allHiLux models, prepare you for the worst bylocking the seatbelts prior to a collision. Suchsafety advances are the result of Toyota’s ‘GlobalOutstanding Assessment’ (GOA) Programme. In other words, Toyota worldwide takes yoursafety very seriously. As a result the HiLux has an energy absorbingfront body/chassis structure and a strong safetycell, to help keep the cabin intact during acollision (it’s also another way that HiLux willfurther strengthen its ‘unbreakable’ reputation).Caring for the environment as well. The greater power output of the engines isnot at the expense of the environment. Thisis evident by all of the HiLux range containingan engine that is so fuel efficient that theyeach meet EURO IV emissions standards ##(standards higher than those seen in Australia).Increased fuel efficiency contributes to reducingCO 2 emissions. Variable Valve Timing withintelligence (VVT-i) equipped engines alsohave further innovations which optimise fuelefficiency and minimise emissions of the majorpollutants hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide andnitrogen oxides. Variable Valve Timing withintelligence (VVT-i) in both of the petrol enginesmeans mild overlap at idle and low engine load, which means reduced opportunity for raw fuelto go straight out the exhaust. Even thehigh-efficiency automatic transmissions helpwith operational efficiency.## From August ’08 production.

The strong, quiet type.HiLux has impressive body rigidity resulting ingreater bending rigidity versus the previous HiLux,better durability and reduced Noise, Vibration andHarshness (NVH). In fact, body design has beenone of Toyota’s strong points for years, achievinghigh rigidity yet meeting strict weight targets.Computer Aided Design (CAD) and attention tomaterial dimensions has helped, along withclever bracket structures and the placement ofreinforcing panels.Extensive use of high tensile steel sheet maximisesbody strength and rigidity. The full body outer sidepanel is pressed from a single sheet, with no joinsto flex and less chance for corrosion to sneak in.Plus, extensive use of anti-corrosion sheet steelfurther extends durability. The stronger body willcontribute to crash safety, reduced NVH and offersgenerous load carrying capacity.A classy chassis.Something you won’t find supporting some otherutes is a full chassis, accounting for HiLux’s up to1.2 tonne* payload. The chassis structure utilises strong crossmembers, additional braces, special compressionand bending sections and internal reinforcementsfor extra strength in key areas.Main chassis rails have a deep cross section andoptimum placement of reinforcing panels forhigh lateral bending rigidity and greater stabilityoff-road. While side rails have varying materialthickness further optimising rigidity.Integrating the main cross channels with themain chassis members reduces welding andincreases durability. Not surprisingly, the strong chassis means youcan load HiLux with up to 1.2 tonnes* of toolsand materials with confidence (payload varies bymodel). Same goes for towing capability. Checkthe towing specs that show you can pull portablepower generators or power boats without fear ofpulling its insides out.Strong yet forgiving.Certain body and chassis components upfront have been carefully designed to create animpact-absorbing structure.Varying thickness of chassis sections in the mainfront rails helps control impact crash energy, whilethe cabin structure has been kept strongfor protection.*Please note:Pending model configuration as some models fall under 1.2 tonne. The loading configuration of your Hilux reduces the available payload for passengers, optional equipment, cargo and tow-ball download. When changing the massconfiguration of your Hilux, it is necessary to consider total mass of the vehicle (including passengers, optional equipment, cargo, tow-ball download and trailer mass) and the distribution of the mass to ensure that Gross Vehicle Mass(GVM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM), maximum towing capacity, maximum tow-ball download and individual axle limits of your Hilux are not exceeded when the vehicle is in service. The configuration of different optional extras on yourHilux will cause different loadings on the front and rear axle. It is important to realise that additional equipment, seat position, passenger position, and other load factors may cause a shift in the loadings of the front and rear axles. It isimportant that this configuration change be taken into account when you are loading your Hilux. Reference to Gross Combined Mass (GCM) refers to the total permissible combined weight of the vehicle and trailer/caravan being towedincluding occupants, fuel & cargo.
