Bible Story 21:ELIJAH, THE PROPHET OF GODSCRIPTURE:MEMORY VERSE:1 KINGS 16:29-33; 17:1-24; 18:1,17-39,45JEREMIAH 10:10AAhab became king of Israel and sinnedmore against God than any other king. Becauseof his wife Jezebel, he constructed a temple andplaced an altar for Baal in Samaria. Instead ofworshiping God, the people were worshiping theidol Baal. God was very angry.Elijah was a prophet of God. He spoke tothe Israelites saying that there would be no rainfor some years, because they were not worshipingGod. Elijah continued obeying God and livednear a small stream, drinking its water. Theravens brought him bread and meat each morningand evening. Finally the stream dried up, because ofthe drought. God told him to go to the city ofZarephath, where a widow would take care ofhim. When Elijah was arriving at the gate ofthe city, he met the widow. He asked her to bringhim some water and she obeyed. Then he askedher for bread. She said that she did not haveany, but would willingly prepare a loaf of breadwith her last grains of flour and last drops of oil.Elijah told her to do this and to make some forherself and her son. Then he said, “You will neverbe without flour or oil until God sends the rain.”A miracle! God fulfilled his promise. She neverlacked flour and oil until the rains came, just asElijah said. After awhile, the widow’s son becamesick and Elijah healed him. After three years of drought, the prophetElijah went and spoke to King Ahab. He saidthat because the king and the people of Israelhad stopped obeying God’s laws and worshipedthe idol Baal, God stopped sending rain. ThenElijah asked to have a contest to see who wasthe most powerful, the idol Baal or God. They cut up ayoung bull and placed it on top of their altar. Then from morning until afternoon the prophetsprayed to Baal. Nothing happened. Elijahsaid that perhaps Baal was traveling or asleep. The prophets of Baal yelled even louder untilevening, but still nothing happened, not one signfrom Baal.Afterwards Elijah repaired his altar toGod, because it had been broken up by theprophets of Baal. Elijah placed twelve rocksaround the altar, each rock represented one ofthe twelve Tribes of Israel. Next he dug out aditch around the rocks. Then he placed woodon top of the altar, placing the cut parts of ayoung bull on top.
