All advance practice areas acceptnew students in fall term. Effective July 2010, only the Health Care Systems advanced practice area admitsstudents with a BSN for spring semester.Health Care Systems Specialty Options: RN-MSN and BSN-MSN applicants may enroll in part-time or fulltimestudy for the Health Care Systems specialty options.Nurse Practitioner Options: RN-MSN applicants may enroll in part-time or full-time study but must commit todegree completion by Spring 2016. For RN’s, this will require primarily full time enrollment. BSN-MSNapplicants may enroll in part-time or full-time study but must commit to degree completion by Spring 2016.Fall 2013 will be the last time for RN-MSN applicants to enter the NP specialties. In 2014, RN-MSN studentsmay apply to the MSN program for Health Care Systems specialty only. Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Record Examin<strong>at</strong>ion (GRE) scores: An applicant’s GRE scores must be less than five yearsold <strong>at</strong> the time <strong>of</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion submission. ETS will gener<strong>at</strong>e scores for persons taking the computerizedversion <strong>of</strong> the GRE quickly and distribute to design<strong>at</strong>ed schools within two-three weeks. Those taking thepaper version <strong>of</strong> the GRE should allow 4-6 weeks for scores to reach design<strong>at</strong>ed schools. Applicants shouldtake these timeframes into consider<strong>at</strong>ion when planning for portfolio completeness. One <strong>of</strong>ficial score reportshould be sent by Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Testing Service (ETS) to the Gradu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>School</strong>. Processing your applic<strong>at</strong>ioncan be initi<strong>at</strong>ed using un<strong>of</strong>ficial scores. (Note: UNC-Chapel Hill’s <strong>School</strong> Code is #5816, no departmentcode is needed.)Applicants are more competitive when their verbal and quantit<strong>at</strong>ive scores reach or exceed the 50 thpercentile. The GRE is an important factor in admissions decisions; however, it is essential to note th<strong>at</strong> it isnot the sole factor on which decisions are made. Letters <strong>of</strong> Recommend<strong>at</strong>ion: Three references are required for each applicant. Two letters <strong>of</strong>recommend<strong>at</strong>ion are needed from faculty members whose class you have taken and who can speak to youracademic qualific<strong>at</strong>ions and strengths as a student. Specifically, the letters should address your potential forsuccess in gradu<strong>at</strong>e educ<strong>at</strong>ion, leadership ability, and personal characteristics th<strong>at</strong> will help or hinderdevelopment as an advanced practice nurse.The online applic<strong>at</strong>ion will prompt you to submit the email addresses for your three required recommenders.The recommender will then receive an email request for recommend<strong>at</strong>ion and be able to upload thereference into the applic<strong>at</strong>ion. Recommend<strong>at</strong>ions MUST be uploaded into the applic<strong>at</strong>ion.3


Note: applicants who have been out <strong>of</strong> school five or more years may substitute pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcolleagues as referents. If this option is utilized, the pr<strong>of</strong>essional colleagues must have an earnedgradu<strong>at</strong>e degree (master’s or doctor<strong>at</strong>e) and possess the ability to speak to your potential for success ingradu<strong>at</strong>e school.The third reference must be submitted by your immedi<strong>at</strong>e supervisor or department head <strong>of</strong> your currentor most recent nursing position. Full-time students are eligible to apply for scholarships, traineeships and merit assistantships through the<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>. Part-time students are encouraged to pursue external funding opportunities.2. Due to the demands <strong>of</strong> the MSN program, full-time students are also discouraged from working full time.Recommended Review <strong>of</strong> Health Assessment: Students entering NP specialties are expected to build a higherlevel <strong>of</strong> physical examin<strong>at</strong>ion and health assessment skills needed for their new role as a provider <strong>of</strong> primarycare services. The advanced health assessment course is the first clinical course in the master’s program and willfocus on these higher level assessment skills. If applicants have not completed a free-standing undergradu<strong>at</strong>ehealth assessment course in the past 3 years, or do not use physical examin<strong>at</strong>ion or health assessment skills on adaily basis, completing a refresher course is strongly recommended. It is essential th<strong>at</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ional students be fluent inEnglish. Presently, the <strong>University</strong> (including the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>) does not <strong>of</strong>fer ESL programs or an Englishlanguage institute.
