L-shaped garden on steep hillside with burn at the bottom. Acid soil, hillside<br />
planted with rhododendrons, azalea, magnolia, camellias and multiple bulbs.<br />
Upper levels lawned, with perennials, roses, lilies. Plants selected for<br />
fragrance. Garden is steep with many steps. Care is required by visitors.<br />

5 varied village gardens of different sizes and aspects on the north and south<br />
sides of the village green, incl one new garden this year. Two of the gardens<br />
have spectacular views over the R Tees. One is a courtyard garden with hot<br />
and shady areas. Water features, cottage garden borders and vegetable<br />
plots. One of the gardens is a previous winner in the Darlington in Bloom<br />

A ◆ LINDISFARNE CASTLE GARDEN<br />

approaching the castle the garden can be seen 500 metres across the field<br />

In 1911 Gertude Jekyll designed this garden as a summer garden for the then<br />
owner of the castle, Edward Hudson. Containing large drifts of hardy annuals<br />
(incl a fine show of sweet peas) the garden is a riot of colour in the height of<br />
summer. The gardener will be available for garden walks and to answer<br />
questions throughout the afternoon.<br />

Bog garden with pond. Old-fashioned roses, 3 herbaceous borders, large<br />
